I just bought an '02 Passat with 42k miles on it. I didn't notice it when I test drove it but now I'm hearing a knocking/thumping sound from the front end that goes to the speed of the wheels at slow speeds (10-30mph). I can also feel it pulse when I use the brakes at slow speeds. What this might be?
View 3 RepliesI just picked up my car after having a shop install ball joints, tie rod ends, and end links and there is a thumping sound coming from I'm guessing the right front tire that is consistent with speed. I had an alignment done today as well. Is it possible that my newish tires are already worn unevenly and the alignment is showing that now?
Either that or the wheel is not seated completely. I'll call the guy back tomorrow when they open and let him know what I hear.
Only reason I didn't so it myself is because its cold out now and he did everything including alignment.
Our 2009 Santa Fe has a knocking sound coming from the undercarriage of the vehicle. It cannot be heard when parked or when coasting. If I gently depress the gas pedal enough to rev the engine to 1500-2000 rpm when traveling at speeds of 35mph or greater it can be heard. The rate of the knocking / thumping appears to be related to vehicle speed, i.e., the faster we move, the higher the knocking rate.
Yesterday I emptied the vehicle of all contents and was still able to produce the sound upon demand.
I replaced my struts and shocks a few weeks ago and i installed lowering springs H&R. Yesterday i started hearing this knocking thumping noise coming from the right front of the car me and my uncle took the wheel off today and looked around and everything was nice and tight we proceed to both push down on the right corner of the car to have it bounce up and down and we heard the same knocking sound coming from the right front area it sounds almost as if the strut blew out in the front right would the symptoms i described concur with the front strut being blown out, and on a side note the struts are only a few weeks old is this even possible since the struts are so new? I do have 20" rims on the car with low profile tires could i have hit a pothole hard enough to cause the strut to blow out? Iam planning on taking a trip to the dealer tomorrow and have them check it out.
View 2 RepliesExperienced a loud "knocking" sound coming from the Passat's front end? It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it sounds like it's originating from the front axle area. I haven't pinpointed a pattern yet, but it seems to happen when there's additional weight being put on the front end--i.e. at the point of going down a hill to flat, or when initially going up a hill from flat. And no, I'm not bottoming out. Basically, the knock sound is so random/loud/alarming.

Have low mileage 2002 Sierra SLE that has a body noise that haven't been able to locate. The sound is similar to a bad shock....Replaced the front shock.....which wasn't 2 years old...and then the noise reappeared again....Have checked the wheels and motor mount...but so far no luck....
It seems to be worse in cooler weather and is reproduced when driving over an uneven surface or hitting a bump....The clunk is intermittent...Sometimes you will get the noise driving over a bump....sometimes not......The noise seems to be originating on the driver front quadrant....but i maybe wrong....
Have had mechanic check the truck on a hoist, but can't find anything out of order...no tire wear...wheels are solid with no play...nothing out of the ordinary that we can see....Tried moving the body by hand..but can't reproduce the "clunk".....
Even after 14 years the truck is solid ...and no rattles or noises until now......Guess i'm just a nit picker...but would like to locate the source......
In the last few days I have been hearing like a thumping sound coming from the front of my car. It is happening when i going through a turn with some bumps, slightly aggressive, but not crazy. Haven't been in the canyon since it started so I am not sure how it will react pushing the car to about 7/10. Which is about as close to the limit as I will get off track. The sound has come at about say 4/10. just off ramps and stuff. It sounds very similar to a car with very tight coilovers. Could it be the XDS working? It isn't a clicking like a traditional diff, and I don't expect that it is. But obviously I don't have a lot of driving experience with an electronic diff like the XDS. I will take the car to VW as soon as i have time.
View 2 RepliesMy friend has a 2005 Subaru Impreza RS (2.5 L) that just (today) started making what amounts to a clicking or thumping sound once the car reaches about 30 mph. I'm sure it does it at slower speeds, but I was unable to hear it. It is definitely in the front end. And seems to be coming from the drivers side. I asked if she had hit any large potholes recently, and the answer was no. Around three weeks ago she had studded snow tired mounted on the car. I don't think the tires are the issue. But perhaps the installation process may have played a part since the care was placed on a lift.

It only happens on low rpm's and I can hear it best when it's in neutral, if I give the brakes a little push I can hear it louder, more profound, and can also feel it on my feet a little, but I don't only hear it while I have the pedal depressed. So..what it could be?
View 1 RepliesWhen being driven my '66 Stang makes a clunking sound in the front end which seems to be coming from the front toward the passenger side.
I've had the car in to my mechanic twice in the last 30 days for this issue. He took the wheels off, repacked the brakes on one side, but hasn't found the problem. During the test drives the car did not reproduce the noise.
Lately, I've noticed that when I really hear the clunking noise is after I've made a sharp turn, like when driving slowly in a parking lot, and have returned the steering to a straight position. We didn't make any sharp turns during the test drives.
I have a 2005 Camry XLE. Since past few months I have started hearing a strange grinding / thumping noise from the front passenger side wheel. It can be clearly heard at slow speed and almost sounds like the wheel is lopsided and is rubbing against something. As the car picks up speed, the frequency picks up and the sounds disappears eventually.
So, I figured it must have been because the car had hit a curb few months ago and must have bent the rim. I had the wheels looked at while getting rotation and balancing done and was told that there is no rim damage. The sound went down a little after rotating the wheels but is still there. The mechanic doesn't think that it is the bearing because the sound disappears after moderate speeds. So, trying to figure out what could be causing the noise?
Looking for a diagram that breaks down the front axle components of a 1997 mercury mountaineer? I believe my drivers side ball joint is shot because it makes a thumping sound whenever it goes down the road and the wheel has a lot of play in it.
View 2 RepliesI recently did a brake job on an 02 Explorer, consisted of new pads and rotors (Rear). The Slide pins were fine and the piston was not frozen in the calipers.
Shortly after the Explorer will occasionally make this "thump...thump....thump..." feeling/sound.
It is not vibration.... it feels more like passing over small bumps in the road.
It is most consistent from 30-50mph, but I have felt it from 20-65.
It is more prominent on decel, but you can feel it on accel as well.
It makes no difference if you touch the brakes or not, or if you push the clutch in and/or take it out of gear.
Speed does not seem to effect the timing of the "thumps" it appears to be the same from 20-60mph. I'm at a loss...
I have a 2003 Explorer 4.0l 4x4 auto. Yesterday day the passenger rear tire got a flat, so I put the full size spare on, and went about my business. About 2 miles up the road is a stop sign, so I start slowing down, and while slowing down I can hear a whining thumping sound from the front of the vehicle. It wasn't doing this before the flat, but right after I put the spare on it starts to do this. It only happens when slowing down, not under acceleration.
View 6 RepliesMy 08 passat seems to shutter or vibrate at higher and lower speeds. It comes from the wheels(front). At first I thought my wheels aren't balanced, but the VW dealership said everything is fine.???huh.. they roadtested it and nothing...but others that drive with me totally notice it..Major road noise because of it.
They also sold me winter tires and rims and they wore out after 25k same noise?... "Broken beads".... they said i hit a pot hole.. I don't think so.... So what do you think? Rotors? if so how much am i gonna get jacked ..
My 79 year old father put fuel additive in his 2010 Chevy Impala. Don't ask me how much, or for how long... The Check Engine light came on. I never got a clear answer from him on what his mechanic said about it. Five to Ten fill ups later the Check Engine light went out on its own. Engine seems fine. Could this have caused damage to the engine or emissions controls? Would a computer diagnostic from a mechanic pinpoint any problems? Would you recommend a computer diagnostic be performed?

It does not happen with every single turn, but i notice it mainly when i am at a standstill and go to make a relatively sharp turn and give it a good amount of gas. Now I am not trying to do a burnout or fly off the line, but its not a grandma start either. slightly more enthusiasm than your normal daily drive start.
View 5 RepliesI just replaced my stock shocks with Bilstein HDs. I am using the stock springs.When going around a continuous right bend , like an exit off ramp, there is a knocking sound coming from the driver side front wheel area. The sound is present only when not accelerating (foot off the gas) the knocking sound stopped once the accelerator is pressed.
I replaced the rubber upper mount and bushing when I installed the shocks, and I have checked that everything is tight. Is the problem the cv joint? I did not have this problem before I changed the shocks. I searched this subject, but no one has described exactly what I have observed.
The last issue I have to tackle with the GS450h is a knocking sound coming from what seems the front wheels and mostly the right wheel. This is when driving over a ditch or uneven road like a cobblestone road.
This issue was present before the RSR down sus springs were installed (i.e. in factory setup) but has since gotten more obvious, probably due to the more rigid suspension. Initially I thought it may have been the brake pads, however when braking harder (beyond regenerative braking system) it remains present. So I think the brakes can be ruled out.
The suspension and wheel setup have been checked by the Lexus dealer three times now and by a suspension specialist. None of them could find a thing wrong with it. What it may be?
Today I noticed a knocking sound coming from what sounds like the front left (drivers side). When I accelerate and when I brake the sound stops. The sound also stops when I am going around a bend in the road as well as when I change lanes. When I am turning a corner I do not hear the sound.
