I have a 2002 Passat 4motion 2.8 automatic. I recently moved from PA to Florida and love my car but don't need AWD down here. Could I possibly disconnect the drive components going to the rear of the car...also hoping to get better gas mileage from the disconnect.

View 3 RepliesAlright, need to decide between a 2000 Passat 4motion with 108k miles, no maintenance history - OR - a 1997 Toyota 4runner, all maintenance history available, 150k, new breaks, timing and water pump just done. The VW is 1k more. I should add the 4runner has zero rust, and no frame rot.
Here is why I'm having a hard time.
1. I like VW's
2. MPG / Cost for gas is actually LESS for the 4runner... no premium, 4motion nets 17mpg avg - 4runner nets 16mpg avg (I drive 50/50 city highway).
The roads where I live are HORRIBLE - 1ft deep potholes are normal in the city, and unavoidable, expansion joints rise up to 4" at times- which feels like hitting a damn log.
I wrench my own cars, I've never gone to a mechanic or dealer ever. Had a mk2 gti, mk2 jetta, mk3 vr6 gti, a mk3 cabrio, and a mk4 jetta 1.8t in my past. Ive done timing belts, CV's, wheel bearings, control arms, struts, rebuilt heads. BUT- the Passat looks to be a complete PITA to work on (insane timing belt procedure, 8 front control arms, TCM water rot issues, etc). The 4runner appears on surface- to be much easier to wrench on - I could be wrong. I do have a VAGCOM, which supports a bit on the VW.
I love VW's - but I want AWD (or true 4x4), space, and something I can actually work on. The reason for AWD is I have family near the upper peninsula of MI I would like to visit year round.
Does your car make an annoying whining sound when accelerating? My engine wines almost as if it had a S/C. You can only hear it when you rev under 2200rpm.

View 5 RepliesIs rattling under acceleration normal on the tig? Sounds like a heatshield to me or something, usually around 2500 rpm or so, pretty disappointing on a 35k dollar vehicle.
Imagine a drawer of silverware being shaken around, that's kind of what it sounds like, mostly noticeable with the windows down.
i have a 2002 passat b5.5 and i have been having this problem every time i use one of my turning signals it sometimes turns on..........but quickly shuts off...and then sometimes it doesn't turn on at all..
View 2 RepliesMuch of the time the car starts right up as it should. But there are times when you turn the key and nothing - no movement, no noise, etc. The dash lights come up, nothing else.
At such times the car often will start after you wait 10 minutes or so and try again. Once it *does* start it does so pretty normally.
I've suspected either the transponder in the key or the clutch "lock" (manual transmission car) having an intermittent fault, but have not yet taken the car in for a full review. Given the sporadic nature of the problem I fear that the dealer won't be able to replicate the problem....
The battery is new, so that should not be a factor. My wife uses the car most of the time, and she's freaking out.
Check engine light came on after a car wash yesterday. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the car and i recently had an oil change done. i use full synthetic oil too and always get it done on time. Is there a way for me to clear the engine light myself?
View 8 RepliesEvery time you turn the wheel it makes a groaning noise, the power steering fluid is full, it seems to do it more while driving then when at a full stop. sometimes it sounds like it is coming from the center of the car, then it will sound like it is coming from the suspension.
View 2 RepliesSuddenly, while starting the car I see the ABS & Brake warning lights come on for a few seconds and then turn off. After a week of driving it the warning light come on and stay on and now another light comes on that looks like a circle with an exclamation mark in it. Am I in danger of damaging anything if I keep driving it? I called the dealer and explained the problem and he said the problem is a faulty ABS Control Unit.
View 20 RepliesMy 2002 F150 Screw has been giving me issues when trying to start it for the last month. Sometimes it will start sometimes it won't. When I turn the ignition on the gauges all seem normal, the theft light turns solid then goes out, but engine will turn over but not start. Sometimes it will start if I leave the ignition on for 20 seconds then pull the key and try again. (this doesn't always work). I have disconnected the battery for about 2 minutes this usually works but not always.
Sometimes it will start first time with no issues. Once the the engine fires it runs fine. Another symptom is when I shut the engine off, pull the key and open the door, the chime telling me that the key is still in the ignition sounds. (but the key is in my hand)
I put a new battery in yesterday to rule that out and because the old one seemed to be getting weak. (starting issues didn't go away). I don't want to put 300+ into a fuel pump without being sure that's the problem.
Single air compressor pressure switch issue. New switch installed still same problem. When hot outside (90) compressor will turn off for several minutes then turn on. System blows cold when running with pressure 35/190. If I jump the pressure switch on the accumulator it runs full time fine no issues. Connect the switch and it will drop out while still running 35/190.

I pulled the fuse, and when I put it in again, the passenger side headlight wouldn't turn on- checked the bulb, it's ok, amateur mechanic from the hood tried to ground a wire, nothing. I read that the schematics for the headlight wiring are odd in this car. Looking for a solution my mechanic in the hood could try before going elsewhere. Saturn 2002 SL....
View 12 RepliesI have a 2002 Saturn L300 V-6 3.0L. The car always starts okay when it's cold, like overnight cold. After I've run it for at least 20 minutes to half an hour, then turn it off and leave it for about the same amount of time (i.e., 20 minutes to half an hour), it will sometimes, but not always, fail to turn over when I try to restart it. The battery is fine, there's plenty of juice, the starter cranks aggressively, but the engine won't fire up. My mechanic said the fuel pressure was low, about 20 lbs, when it should have been 50-70 lbs, so he replaced the fuel pump, but the problem is still there.
He also blew air through the fuel lines to test for obstructions, but there were none. Now he thinks it could be the on-board computer or a defective anti-theft device which is intermittently sending the wrong signal to the fuel pump. On one occasion when the car wouldn't turn over, he said there was 0 lb fuel pressure. Since the car starts maybe 90% of the time with no problem, it's difficult for my mechanic to work on it. He doesn't have time to drive it around town to warm it up, and I'm getting tired of going to his shop and taking the car out for a spin once or twice a day in the hope that, when I bring it back to him and we let it cool down, it won't start. What else to check?
When I turn the car off the key only goes to acc. If I wait a few minutes I can hear a clicking sound coming from the steering column I think. Then I can turn it off all the way.Whats causing this? and how do i fix it. My car is a pontiac Grand Prix 2002.
