Changing the OEM steering wheel to something sportier? I have a 2002 1.8 Passat, without the multifunctional steering wheel. The wheel is huge. I am thinking of changing to a hree 'spoke' wheel, a la GTI or R32.
How would that effect the airbag? What about ease of turning?
I tried searching this - read about 06's with wiring harness issues. Is this the same problem.
It started with the aribag light staying on after startup (MFD message "airbag fault") and then today (2days later) the steering wheels buttons don't light up or work.
Getting a slight clicking sound/feel when turning the steering wheel when either stopped or moving very slowly. It's most noticeable when turning in and out of a parking space. Don't think it's subframe but may the strut bearing caps.
View 16 RepliesWhen I turn the steering wheel I hear what sounds like a frictional noise...like a rubbing. I have checked the tires and they are ok. I have checked the Power steering fluid and it seems fine but I did add a little. I am going to wait a little time to see if the additional PW fluid works.

I hear a noise when I turn my steering wheel. It happens when I am stopped or rolling. It sounds like a giant, stretching rubber band. Or maybe someone rubbing two balloons together. What it might be?

Want to take a 2001 Audi TT Quattro steering wheel... only horn... no switches, and swap it with the passats steering wheel, same setup just a horn on the passat steering wheel.
Is this possible to do safely, and do the harness is the same so i dont plug in new steering wheel and have the car blow all the airbags or throw codes?
Every time you turn the wheel it makes a groaning noise, the power steering fluid is full, it seems to do it more while driving then when at a full stop. sometimes it sounds like it is coming from the center of the car, then it will sound like it is coming from the suspension.
View 2 RepliesI took my '02 Passat in a couple weeks ago when the steering wheel controls and horn stopped working. They replaced a fuse. About 10 days later, I experienced the same problem. That time, they said that the steering wheel was all shorted out and needed to be replaced. Five days later, again the same problem. Now the dealer says it's some faulty switch from the fuse panel, which caused the short of the old steering wheel. Since that wasn't replaced, that's why I experienced the problem again. Could that have been the only problem? Or could that really have fried the steering wheel, too. Am I being taken, and do I need to fight to get some of that money back? Or is this legit? How can I verify that what they said was the problem actually was, and that I'm not left paying for their mistaken diagnosis?
View 3 RepliesI was having problems with my 02 Escape of misfire on cylinders. After doing a lot of checking, changing spark plugs, changing coils, ect, I decided that it could be the computer. So, I ordered one and put it in. When I turned on the key, all the gauges pegged and then came back to zero, but it acted like someone cut the power line to the starter. No click, no nothing. I checked fuses and they are fine. Even changed them around to make sure. Is there something that I have to do when you change the computer to get it to start? Had no problems with the starter prior, so it has to be something associated with the computer and changing it.
View 3 RepliesOn the way to lunch today, I stopped at a store and ran in for about 10 minutes. When I get back in my 'egg, I notice that the steering wheel airbag module has "popped" or "sprung" out of place. Instead of being flush, it is now sticking out and creating quite the safety hazard, I'm sure.
View 15 RepliesI have two Sonatas, an 08 and 09 both limited and both 4 cylinders. On the 09 I treated myself to a custom leather and wood steering wheel. I disconnected the battery and let the car sit for a couple hours before starting swap. Then took my time and disconnected all wires and used a puller to remove the old wheel. Transferred the cruse and radio switches to the new wheel and reassembled in the reverse of removal. No issues everything went smooth. Reconnected the battery and started the car now the airbag light is on The light comes on when you initially turn the key goes off for about five or six seconds and then comes back on when engine is running. I did a search with no luck. I will disassemble and recheck everything.

View 11 RepliesI was wondering if with vagcom you can change the scroll-wheel on the steering wheel to run through the 6 presets, rather than just going through all of the stations. The way it is, I find it useless but it would be great if it could go through my presets. Maybe I just missed it in the owners manual...but I don't think VW gives you a way to change it... Btw, it's an '04.5 V8 w/ nav - fully loaded.

I'm not sure if it's on purpose so if the airbag deploys it breaks away but I just noticed it. it's a 2015 Prius 3. Rather not have the airbag go off while driving.

I just noticed a clicking sound coming from the steering wheel Area... it does not occur with any specific movement and is fairly quite... definitely sounds like some kind of electrical switch tht is continually trying to do something (sensor??).
I am wondering if this is related to the airbag fault? Very annoying once you pick up on it... along with whatever is loose in my driver side pillar next to the seat belt strap that rattles with the bass!!
Ok, I accidentally got a speaker wire wrapped around the steering wheel while I was driving. I turned the wheel and the wire broke. I was able to pull the wire out but now none of the controls work on my steering wheel and the airbag indicator light is on. I watched some vids on YouTube on steering wheel removal and I suspect I may have caused a connector to become separated. Does this sound reasonable? I am a little hesitant to start taking it apart. I don't want to do some serious damage. Does this sound like it will be an expensive repair?
View 6 RepliesThe steering wheel mysteriously clocked itself slightly to the right after changing out the standard tires to same sized studded tires for winter. This has never happened before and I was unaware of any alignment/wheel clocking problems up to driving into the shop to swap out the tires on the wheels.
Air pressures were all good and even all around--but I don't know if they were even before the change-out. Also, the wheels were balanced and the drive afterwards revealed no pulling either way or vibrations. On top of that neither the tire store nor my Toyota dealer had any explanation(s).
I'm only guessing at this point that prior to studded tires there might have been a clocking error so slight it was not perceptible in over 5K miles and with the studded tires now it is perceptible.
Q: Is it possible under my circumstances for a different set of tires on the same wheels to make this sort of difference?
I'm trying to remove the airbag so I can get to the steering wheel lights to change them. I took the covers off of each side of the steering wheel, expecting to find T30 torx screws to take off so that I can remove the airbag, but there seem to be no screws at all holding it in! Am I missing something here? Will have pictures in a couple minutes.

Having searched I believe that I need to remove two torx screws from the back of the wheel to remove the air bag. These have that damned protrusion in the middle so I'll have to find and buy a torx driver just for that job. What size is it?
View 5 RepliesI noticed over the last week that there was a pretty loud whine associated with turning the steering wheel. I checked the fluid level and it didn't seem low. I added a touch just to make sure. Took it into the dealership today and they called back and told me there's a bunch of fluid on the bottom splash pan. They haven't said what the culprit is yet. 46k miles on the car.
