My 2002 wagon had decided to display the BRAKE warnings, the ones where the word BRAKE flashes in the right side instrument cluster and a big STOP appears in the MFD. Sometimes it alsondings, sometimes not. Sometimes these warnings show and then disappear, while other times they remain on.
The brake fluid level is fine. Is this the result of a bad sensor? What's the best next step?
I've recently replaced all my brake pads front and back. After doing so, the Break Fault warning would come on intermittently (This warning would come on prior to replacing the pads on long hard right turns very sporadically). I tried bleeding the front breaks again, but after doing so the brake fault warning stays on continuously.
View 4 RepliesSuddenly, while starting the car I see the ABS & Brake warning lights come on for a few seconds and then turn off. After a week of driving it the warning light come on and stay on and now another light comes on that looks like a circle with an exclamation mark in it. Am I in danger of damaging anything if I keep driving it? I called the dealer and explained the problem and he said the problem is a faulty ABS Control Unit.
View 20 RepliesI was asked to look at this Dakota because the Brake warning light and the ABS lights come on.
I get no stored codes with my code reader, and upon test driving it I found that the lights both go off when you shut off the truck, but each time you start up and drive off....those two lights will come on the first time you hit about 30mph and then stay on until you shut off the truck again. Restart and the lights are off until you drive off and hit about 30mph again.
Backing out of the shop, stopping, turning around, down the driveway 50yds and stopping at the road....the lights stay off, even though I just used the brakes three times at least. Get on the road and hit 30mph and they go on.
The two fuses, one in the fuse block by the drivers door and the other (ABS) fuse in the Power distribution box test good.Both brake lights work at the rear as does the high mount brake light. Fluid is at the full mark.
I pulled all four wheels and drums on the back and inspected everything and everything looks good and the E brake cables are intact and working as they should. Brakes were replaced (not by me) and have a little wear, but plenty of material left. No leaks of any lines, calipers, or cylinders. Front rotors are not scored from a sticky caliper, they do have a little minor rusting but because it has been idle for a few months.
I have the same year and drive train in my Dakota. Their truck has about the same stopping power as mine, but I did notice that I did not feel the surging in the ABS as I feel in my truck. I tested this by traveling at about 40mph with the passenger wheels in the gravel and drivers wheels on the pavement and applied the brakes hard. In my truck I felt the surging, but not in theirs. Note that my truck has a tall cap and always carries an extra 800 pounds of gear in the back.Maybe the heavier weight makes my ABS kick in quicker, but I would think weight wouldn't matter.....one wheel is slipping...period.
I've had the brake pad warning light intermittently come on and off in the last week. I took the front left wheel off and had a quick look and there is still 10mm of pad on the outer, also the connection going to the pad seems to be fine.
Is this warning light just an over precaution from VW and I still have plenty of meat left on my brake pads and km's, or should I thoroughly check them all or take it to the mechanic to be on the safe side.
I was driving home and i got a sensor light ive never seen before(at least its not an o2 sensor cel!!!!!!again )about a mile or two from the house today. ,so i drove on to my indi mech.appx.1mile from house and he looked at it before i even found it in the manual, he mentioned it was a low brake pad warning light,so my next questions are i didnt hear or feel anything different ,and i use the tip trans whenever i can but in the 40,000 miles my wife and then me driving it i guess its due,.probably wasnt checked at inspection ,....so is there any possible caliper damage from waiting till i saw the light ,or is it usually just pads and rotors replacement at that point,and how much can it be driven untill i gets an in for appt.at the shop with pbr dustless pads installed this time .......
View 5 RepliesI have 2002 Ford Taurus SES. Currently the brake light is on and the ABS and traction control are not working. The brakes have been checked and are ok and it has been hooked up to a code reader and no codes come up. Occasionally the light will go off and the abs and traction control work for awhile.
View 1 RepliesWithin the past two weeks i've had a warning light that came on. it has come on about 4 times once 2 times within about 5 minutes. the warning comes up on the display screen on the dashboard and says STOP then brake failure then service manual. i've already taken it to a dealer to get it checked out and it came back with nothing. that was after the second time it happened. it has since happened again. it seems to only be happening on cold mornings. i don't know if this has and effect.

View 2 RepliesYesterday while driving my B5 Passat suddenly I heard 2 beeps and a STOP is displayed together with the ABS and brake warning lights just for a few seconds then turned to normal. I took the car to the VW service they've connected the car to the diagnostic system and said no fault. Since yesterday I saw this warning 1 more time. They recommended me to replace the break fluid tank where the fluid level sensor is mounted on, just for replacing the sensor since the fluid level is ok.
Today while the engine is running at idle I pulled out the break fluid sensor cable for 1 or 2 minutes but nothing is displayed and saw no break indication. What will be reason for this?
I would like to buy a 99 B5, with a 2.8 V6 30V 5 speed GLX. The car is running smooth, accelerates well, but there is a fault with the ABS/BRAKE system. When the car starts up, the ABS and the BRAKE warning lamps are staying on, and the central display says "STOP", "BREMSEN FEHLER", "BERTIEBS ANLEITUNG".
Can I find out the system fault from these messages, or should I get the codes? Does it mean that not just the ABS system is faulty but there is something wrong with the brakes too? I did a test drive, and put on the brakes hardly, and the car stopped well.
And there is an other question..the cluster shows the info in "euro mode" (km, l/100km, german language, etc). I would like to see the info in english, and MPG's and miles, so how can I set back to "US mode"?
On 2004 Passat 1.8T Tiptronic that I am daily-driving these days, I recently had this message displayed on the cluster:
Along with this, I had "Beep beep beep" repeated over and over, and E-brake light (!) blinking at the same time. I scanned the car but VAG-COM (latest version) couldn't find any DTC, so I inspected the car and found the rear brake pad was rather thin (but not all the way down yet). Since it looks overdue, I am going to replace the rear brake pad, but looking for more info about this particular warning.
Last night I was driving my '99 Passat when suddenly I heard this loud alarm in my car. Quickly looking down I saw what I think were my ABS and brake indicator lights on. It happened so fast, maybe less than a second and everything was back to normal.
I was driving on dry pavement on country roads at about 60 mph. Outside temp was 37 and there were major gusts of wind, maybe 40 mph or so. Vehicle has about 115,000 miles on it.
Checked my manual and it said to have it checked.
Had a small brake fluid leak from my right-rear wheel, so I took it into a local place called Wheel Works. They said the right-rear caliper needed to be replaced, so I told them to go ahead.
Two days after I pick up the car, the ABS light and brake warning lights start flashing intermittently. They'd come on at random times, and then turn back off. After about 2 weeks of this, the warning lights are now on all the time.
I've read elsewhere on these forums that the ABS module on our cars can go bad and might need to be rebuilt. But is it possible that the mechanic caused this problem when he was working on the brakes to replace my caliper? Could it be something more minor than the ABS module? I now have reason to believe this mechanic is shady, so I'm hesitant to bring it back there.
Brake warning light came on. Diagnosed as bad abs module. Mechanic replaced twice. One shell sensor continues to read not turning while it is turning. Mechanic has check continuity, it's fine. Seems to have a short. He cannot find where it is and next step is ripping out much interior to track tiny wire. Will not pass state inspection with brake warning light on.
View 6 RepliesI just started getting this weird warning message on my dash console that says "STOP, STOP, Brake Failure, Service Manual" and the Brake and ABS lights turn on and then after a couple minutes it that all goes away.
I have checked the brake fluid and the fluid sensor and those are fine and i unhooked my battery and had it restart, but it still is giving me this message intermittently. My brakes work fine and i just had my brake pads done recently, so i know that isnt the problem.

View 5 RepliesI just purchased a 2002 vw passat wagon VR6 yesterday. Driving it home about 2 hours into the drive, the warning on the dash started flashing door open and the display said "rear lid open" and a very annoying sound kept chiming. It did that all the way home. Once I got it home I turned it off and locked it. An hour later the alarm starts going off.. figure it was because of the trunk lid. The lid is completely latched and closed and locked.
