The plastic shield under the engine has fell down and dragged while driving. I have put it back up with zip ties and i seem to be getting worse gas mileage now since air is catching?? Is it ok just to remove this guard?
View 5 RepliesThe engine splash shield to my 2010 Prius fell/tore off after ran over some chunks of ice and snow. (The plastic "flap" that folds down to allow access to the oil filter and drain plug. My local dealership says I need to replace the entire plastic lining under the vehicle to the tune of $250+.
View 19 RepliesRecently purchased a CPO 2009 F250SD 6.4L. Happy with the truck overall but this AM I noticed a slight burning plastic smell so I opened the hood and looked around closely. Didn't really find the culprit(I don't think) but noticed that the engine compartment heat shield/barrier appears to be falling down above and behind the turbos (pictures linked below). How big a deal is this? Would it be covered under the CPO warranty? It almost seems like a safety issue. I also wonder if the insulation material, now exposed without the metal reflector material, is what is causing the smell....

I have read that the main function of the heat shield is to prevent fires when parking in long grass. Does it also protect the bottom of the car from starting on fire?

It is pretty torn up and I'm thinking of just taking it off. Am I allowed to take it off? If so how should I go about taking it off?

View 7 RepliesThis noise has me stumped. The frequency of noise seemed like the sway bar bushing. I fixed these and still making noise. Almost sounds like a something vibrating against the heat shield, but nothing. Seems to be front right. in the last year replaced the upper bearing struts. Shocks 4 years old. I have pushed the brakes and sound does not go away. In fact some days i drive the car and there is no noise. I just lowered the car. 132k
View 7 RepliesAfter coming home at a late night in my 2005 Honda Accord, I heard noise coming from the drivers side front wheel. I've heard this noise once before after a rock got stuck up in my brakes. I pulled into a parking lot and jacked up the car and got the tire off. I couldn't see anything that would be making the noise. After going to get something from the trunk the car fell off the jack. I had a tow truck come and lift it up. We put the tire back on and he said there shouldn't be anything serious and I no longer heard the noise coming from the wheel on my way home. But after driving it the next day, I noticed when the car is turned sharply to the right while driving, it makes a scratching/screeching noise. What could have happened?

Good news: My extended warranty is good for 10 more days! So the fan and fan clutch need replaced.
Should I insist that they replace the serpentine belt that rubbed on fan (50,000 miles on belt, original belt) and the water pump? It put a good dent in the radiator but didn't puncture it.
Just a quick question, my serpentine belt fell off while driving on the freeway today and wondering what are the possible causes for this too happen? First things that came too mind were tensioner or worn out belt. Hard to believe the belt would be worn out though as it only has 65k miles.

View 16 RepliesI have a 2001 Passat GLS 1.8T Tip 34500 miles... Loose heat shields. Well, I couldn't find anything to fix, so I brought it to the dealer. They said that this was common on 2001 Passats with about 30k miles. All stock.
These were the symptoms that the car was exhibiting: At first it was a minor rattle that occurred at 1200-1400 rpm.......only when the engine was warm, and only when I was in drive. (I could not reproduce it in neutral)...
A few weeks later, it the engine rattled upon startup for half a second. I assumed that this was just the heat shield issue getting worse. Dealer says that I have a bad cam tensioner, and that they will replace it under warranty. However, I had to reschedule the repair for this week because they couldn't fit the 5 hour job in on Saturday.
He said that there is a spring backup for the hydraulic tensioner, but to get it fixed soon. Obviously I was going to have it fixed ASAP. What this cam tensioner does? Isn't there a chain that connects timing belt to cam shaft? Why does this need a tensioner? Does it change in tension?
Need to get to ATF drain plug, but have engine splash shield in the way. Any step by step? Will I need to get this thing on stands/jacks to do this?
View 4 RepliesI have an '06 Camry 4 cyl. with an engine noise, and I want to repair whatever is causing it. Sounds like it's coming from the exhaust shield. When I press down on the shield while the engine is running, the noise changes.

we just picked up a 2000 passat wagon and we were out driving it around and the CEL came on, looked up the codes and it came back with P0421. it still runs great. I am just woundering what the problem is. 2.8 v6 with 159,000 mile's.
