Passat (B5) :: 1999 - Sunroof Opening On Its Own
Feb 15, 2007
My girlfriend drives a 99 Passat and while driving the other day the sun roof opened on it's own. moving the switch did nothing. We had to manually close the sunroof. a few minutes later it did it again. Usually I'd tell her she's nuts and imagining things but i was in the car while it happened.

My mother keeps telling me her sunroof keeps opening (tilting) by itself and I didn't believe her until I was in the car when it happened. It just goes up by itself... Should I just bring it in?

Over the last few days my car's sunroof keeps opening and shutting by itself. Its starting to get really annoying and embarrassing especially while on a date.

When opening the sunroof, usually for the first time in a day, the sunroof will make a squeal kind of noise. Nothing appears to be in the tracks or anything.
Usually if I close it, and reopen it, it seems to go away (guess it re-lubed?)
Kind of embarrassing on a newish car (2014) with only 30k miles.

Just picked up a 2001 GLX wagon and it is something my 93 did -- when opening the sunroof all the way, it makes a "popping" noise. With my last car, it was from something that snapped rendering it useless.

So today was above freezing.. [URL] .... I open the sunroof as I'm driving around town, and I notice a rather distinct rumbling noise.. I put my hand against it and discover the roof is vibrating harmonically. Which I've discovered seems to happen any time I have the sunroof fully open, over ~30mph (50kmh). If I close it one tick, the problem disappears completely, I guess as the airflow changes. Is this badly-designed aerodynamics, or actually something misplaced or misaligned in my sunroof?

My Mom has an '04 RX330, and the other day the sunroof randomly opened, and she closed it with the button with no problem. For the last 3 days, this has occurred randomly (opening only - all closing is by her) and all occurrences are when she is driving (not parked).
I told her to wrap the fob in foil today to remove that connectivity and to see if the fob is to blame. We will replace those batteries anyway as I don't know that they have ever been replaced.

When I open my sunroof, it doesn't fully open in one shot. If I want it fully open I must press the button again and hold it. Is this normal?

Noticed earlier today that my one-touch opening quit working on my sunroof. Release the switch and the sunroof stops moving. Push it back (to open) and it switches directions from whichever direction it was last moving. Hold it until it opens all the way and keep holding it, and it will start closing again (instead of stopping). Pushing the switch forward, backward, or tilting it has the exact same effect - it moves the sunroof in the opposite direction of the direction that it last moved.

'07 ES350 sunroof makes a thud when initially opening... Sounds like its actually dropping down fast and hitting bottom. Occurred once prior and dealer said they cleaned the track. How do I clean the track?

2006 GX 470, purchased CPO with 26K miles in March 2008.....my sunroof just made a horrific clicking noise upon opening last night, and the one-touch opening isn't working, I have to physically hold the button down in order for it to open all the way.

Bought my 2004 Lexi RX330 in June 2014 with 96k (now has 105k - I drive a lot). It is beautiful and I love it! However, I am NOT in love with the sunroof that is currently stuck open. It's been making a weird noise upon opening (think bag of chips crackly) for the past few weeks. Yesterday was gorgeous weather in TX, so it was open most of the day. Come time to put her to bed, the sunroof would not close. Making a horrible grindy/clicky noise and closes about 4 inches then stops... then it starts to open again. Weird! There's nothing I can see in the tracks that is stopping it. The passenger side looks like it would close, but the drivers side looks like it is stuck. Tried to take the sunroof motor out, but there is a metal bracket in the way. Besides the fact, what to do with the motor once I had it out...

Our 99 Passat Wagon has had an issue with its sunroof for a little while. It sounds like it's REALLY making an effort to close and open. The entire car shudders a little when the sunroof is being opened or closed. The tilt feature also has a problem. When the sunroof starts to tilt up, the leading edge of the glass pulls back a bit leaving a small gap between the glass and the roof recess. Nothing new there, it's supposed to do that.
However, when it reaches the top of the tilt mode, the glass VIOLENTLY slams into the edge of the roof recess as if it was spring loaded. Not a pretty sight, it sounds horrible and I wonder sometimes if the glass can keep taking it.
We've had the car since it was new and it's never been in an accident. I'm thinking that the sunroof needs to be taken apart, cleaned, lubed up properly and put back together.
But before I do all of that, is there something else that I should check first? It almost feels like it jumped the track at one time and never seated properly.

Possible using vagcom to program a B5.5 to do so. I know the b6 and mkv's it can be done, how about it?

I put my car in reverse and my door locks has some sort of spasm. The rear locks started twitching for several seconds then stopped.
Now both key fobs will only unlock the drive's side door. All locks work fine with the key.
Untimely demise on my remote unlock feature? Other threads have dealt with single door issues. We had that problem with the rear door on our 99 but this not the same issue since only one door will unlock remotely.
I know that my car battery needs to be replaced but it should not cause a problem. Also all fuses were checked and are ok. What to check.

Having problem with the rear hatch on their 2007 2.0T Wagon rear hatch opening by itself? I have had it happen twice now, once in the garage and this am I woke up and it was open in the driveway.
I also seem to be having an issue with the passenger window when I close it, it sometimes gets to the top and then starts to go down again.

When I open my trunk it just doesn't swing open, it feels like it opens up half way bounces back a little and then opens up fully.
I chalked it up to it being a single shock on one side and it can't open that fast but I want to make sure I don't have something defective "Already got hit twice in the head by the trunk lock after leaning into fast "...

If the battery in my B6 Passat is dead, how do I open the trunk?
Other than the sort-of obvious method of crawling through the cabin and pulling the glow-in-the-dark "oh no some gangster has locked me in the trunk" tab. I ask because I recently purchased a portable jump starter and question if the trunk is the best place for it to live.

So, last night I buy this 1998 Passat; good deal high miles but in great shape. I look around the car today and noticed that the carpet in the trunk on the side of the fuel door is disheveled. I don't think much of it until I try to access the fuel cap, then I reach in my hand and manually pop the door - so for those that want a manual way to release the door, there you have it, don't resort to screw drivers and such.
Now, I take the release mechanism off and test it with a 12volt battery - works fine. OK, so test the power going to the trunk - 4.4 volts, hmmm? I then check the switch itself and the leads going in are 4.6 volts, again.
So the questions are these:
1. What voltage should I be getting to the switch?
2. Is there a fuse associated with this switch?
3. Where does the voltage originate from?
