Passat (B5) :: 1999 - Removing Top Piece From Shifter
Sep 22, 2006
I have a 1999 Passat with wood trim. I found some instruction on removing the center console but they do not explain how to remove the head piece from the shifter?

View 5 RepliesMy 18" Austin alloys come with black Volkswagen-branded bolts with 9-point "starburst" openings in the center. They look pretty common based on photos I'm seeing on the Web.
Thing is, I don't see anything in the tool kit that looks to match up with these bolts should I, or a mechanic or roadside service, need to remove a wheel(s).
I have the standard tool kit and it has all the tools shown in the manual EXCEPT the "Adapter for anti-theft wheel bolt (if equipped)." Should I have one, or am I missing something else obvious here?
A small piece (triangle shape, about 1/2 inch in the base and maybe 3 inches long) of gasoline station paper towel got stuck in transmission dip stick and went inside the transmission when the dip stick was put back. It happened very quick. When I pulled out the dip stick, the paper towel piece was gone. I'm assuming it went in or stayed in the tube where the dip stick is housed. Drove the van about 230 miles to go home in a combination of highway and city driving. So far, no change in transmission performance.
1. Is it harmful to the transmission and if so how could I remove the paper towel debris?
2. Will changing the transmission fluid and filter (not flush) work?
(Btw, I read that it is not a good idea to do a transmission flush for cars with 100K miles or above) I'm hoping the paper towel piece will disintegrate in the fluid and therefore I don't need to do anything. Or perhaps if it doesn't integrate, it will remain harmless.
01 Passat ... The small black square plastic piece that connects to the bulb of my headlight has melted and wanted to replace it. I just don't know what the part is called.
View 1 RepliesI was washing my 2004 F-250 today and I looked down by the front passenger wheel well and I noticed a small chuck missing from the bottom of the frame. The other side in the same spot doesn't have it and at the spot in question, I noticed some sort of crack had been welded before. I never had any of that done to the truck. What about getting it fixed? get it fixed right away or keep an eye out for cracks. so far its just that hole and what looks like a welded crack above. everything else seems fine. I know a repair would be inexpensive and easy just to weld a steel or titanium plate on the spot.

View 12 RepliesBought a dealer demo last may. Truck has been wonderful. Had less the 1500 miles on it. Noticed when I was installing the lock on my tailgate that some of the plugs that cover up the holes in the plastic piece inside the tailgate were missing. Maybe some of the screws, not sure. Dunno if it's supposed to be that way or what. Just started to get a horrible feeling about it, Taft maybe something major happened. Any way to find out or round they have told me? Mebbe I'm over thinking this.

View 10 RepliesWhat the effect is of taking out the key fob while your car is in motion? I was on the highway once, and my friend asked what would happen if i were to try to take out the key.. I figured to myself, "VW surely must've implemented some sort of safety mechanism..", so i confidently gave it a try.. and to my surprise, the key actually came right out, and my console (speedometer / tach / fuel / engine temp) shut down.. I kinda panicked, and just popped the key fob right back in, and all was well after that.. What is actually going on with the car when you do this?

View 1 RepliesMy ride is 06 Passat v6 4motion. I got 45K on it.
Last night, when I came back home, I could not pull out my key from dash. I tried several times to pull out my key but to fail. So I left my key in the ignition hole and locked my car using spare key. This morning, I tried again but still stuck in dash.
What is worse is that when I arrived dealer shop for that problem, I could pull out my key from dash!
I know that the rear emblem is two pieces, I want to color match the black to silver then black out the VW. Is there a way to just take off the silver VW without removing the whole thing off the back?? If so, how?
View 2 RepliesI am installing the wiring for trailer lights in my 2007 B6 wagon. I need to remove the interior trim panels for this, but I can't find any diagrams or DIYs on where the screws or clips are. I don't want to just go at it and end up putting pressure in the wrong places and breaking clips.

View 4 RepliesI thought i would waste my weekend trying to put my katzkin interior in, its proving to be a lot harder than i thought. I've been searching this but haven't been able to find the details on how to take the bottom of the backseat out. its hinged and folds forward, but i don't see any screws to take it out. this is obviously different from a sedan. there is a plaistic cover over the hinge and there are no screws under there either. this is a 1999 wagon. also where do I get this 12 point torx to dismantle the front seats? i just took the front seat out and took it half apart only to put it all back together again.....

View 7 RepliesThis question probably applies to all VW but curious as to how the paddle shifter operates on the Passat. If i were to install it would i have to move the DSG gearbox into the manual mode in order to shift or could I leave it on "D" and shift down and up at any time?
View 7 RepliesJust got my new Passat this week. Could not believe how much the Sun reflects from the chrome around the shifter, it also reflects from the brushed aluminum. Have not read anything about this on this forum so it must be only me. After four days, great car.
