Whenever I start my 99 passat a really loud vacuum noise is heard. along with the noise the engine idles higher than normal. when the noise goes away after a couple minutes it idles at the normal speed again... what the problem is?
View 3 RepliesNot sure if normal or a malfunction. Twice over the winter here in MN I have been accelerating and when I hit a icy patch the car made a loud thump/clunk noise loud enough to make be think something broke or that I ran over something like an ice block.
I had it looked at by the dealer and everything is suppose to be working normal. I tried to replicate ite on some ice but the traction control kicks in like normal with the flashing and all. I don't normally accelerate hard so it's rare I get traction control to activate.

I think my pcm has gone bad. My wait to start light won't come on an when I turn my key on I can't hear my fuel pump cut on anymore. My vacuum pump is also making a loud noise.
View 10 RepliesWhen I use my automatic transmission to slow my vehicle on steep downhills, the RPMs are much higher than when the engine idles because I use my brakes. The pistons are firing many more times per minute - so am i using more gas? Is the answer different for a standard transmission?
My "mystery vehicle" is a 2011..... outback...
Sometimes I will stop at a light and my idling rpm will go from 600 (usual rate she idles at) to about 950. While this may seem inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, it's noticeable enough that it seems like the car wants to go. It'll lead me to depress the brake more. You can also hear the higher pitch of the faster turning engine (it is a 50% increase in speed). This will happen at random times so I have not been able to pinpoint if it is caused by a particular driving style. ECM for this?
View 7 RepliesThe idle speed is higher than normal, about 800-900 RPM. Whenever I stop for the traffic light, the engine will behave as if someone is pressing the gas pedal intermittently. It has new spark plug wires and coil.
View 8 RepliesIdles really high at startup until the engine gets to normal operating temperature and falls back to normal. Takes 10-15 minutes. I recently de-greased the engine and think I may have fouled a sensor...though the check engine light is NOT on. I'm afraid if I keep this the way it is it will cause damage to the engine.
View 2 Replies2008 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T... I am trying to figure out whats going on with my car for a few weeks now. I have a few things going on and I am not if they are related.
First off I am hearing a odd noise now and then from my engine area. Its so hard to explain, but its kind of like when a plastic bag gets stuck to your car, a fluttery higher pitched noise (and it lasts only a few seconds). It happens now on heavy acceleration (almost always), normal acceleration and even sometimes at start up. Its mostly random and started awhile back but I use to only hear the sound every couple weeks. Now its daily.
Related or not I also have noticed this really bad lag with heavier acceleration, after lagging it then down shifts VERY hard before taking off.
01 crown Victoria, ac was recharged but it doesn't blow cold or hot air. When it is turned on, my car would make a very loud vacuum noise, that's embarrassing. The rpms go up, and if I'm at a stop light I have to hold the brake or the car would take off.

1. Coming to a complete stop hard, grunt.
2. After shutting car off, stepping out of the car and 3sec later GRUNT.
3. Idling sometimes it grunts out of no where.
So my car (2001 Civic) was having some issues that I needed to get worked out, so I was driving my mother's car for a few days. Within the first few minutes I knew there was something wrong, but I had so much going on that I haven't had a chance to get back to it for a while.
So she has a 2003 Toyota Camry with just 39k miles. Her work is about 2 miles away from home, so it basically gets driven there and to get groceries, and local clothes shopping. The car basically never sees the highway.
Hard to describe the sound, but it's like a loud rattling/vibration with every revolution of the front wheels. It sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side. Either the tire or the engine area. Here's a video of it on youtube. You can hear it pretty clearly under the road noise. It sounds kinda of like going over train tracks or something, and I'm only going about 45mph in the video. [URL] ....
So I don't know much about the car, but I am very familiar with my civic, so I checked out a few things. The tires appear to be in pretty good shape. About half the tread left with no unusual wear. I doubt it's the tires, cuz it really doesn't sound like tire noise. I checked the engine mounts and they appear to be in good order without cracks. Wouldn't expect an engine mount to go at 39k miles either, regardless of age. The car is garage kept.
Neither wheel has any side to side or up and down play like a bad ball joint, tie rod end, or wheel bearing would have. The steering wheel doesn't vibrate or anything. The sway bar endlinks appeared to be in good shape. I just changed the brake pads and rotors because of an unrelated issue. It didn't fix the problem.
A couple of things I will note: The belts are kind of dirty. It was really weird because half the belt is brown, the other half is black. It's basically split down the middle of one side. It's just dirt though, as I was able to rub some of it off with my fingers. The car was in a minor accident a couple of years back. It required me to replace the bumper and the passenger side headlight.
I have a 2014 passat 1.8 tsi comfort line about 7 months old. And i have some questions about it. Does warranty cover interior quality? cuz there are loud crackling noises while driving on normal roads. and recently since it snowed the crackling became much more noticeable and loud, really annoying.
In the morning backing out of the driving way, the breaks squeak in a really high pitch sound, the dealership told me it is normal but it got louder than when i first got it. Seems like its a normal problem for most, but is there a way to reduce the noise? i get its cleaning the brakes but its mad loud.
So driving in the snow the brakes get really bumpy, is that abs or is it like crushing snow? just sorta scary feeling.
Recently I have been having a strong gas smell coming from my 1997 F150 Supercab 4.6L 2wd. It is not happening all of the time. I have also been hearing what sounds like a vacuum line leak. A loud shrill which varies with the engine rpm. This also does not happen all of the time.
View 1 RepliesLately it has been in the 20's in my area and I've noticed on the first start of the morning the engine sounds very loud and produces a "knocking" noise that lasts a few seconds and then goes back to its normal loud idle. This only happens on the first start of the day...all subsequent starts in the day are fine. (mine is a 2007 model with the FSI engine)

View 3 RepliesI have an 01 passat 1.8 turbo, I have been having a loud rapping noise coming from the top of the engine. Started about 8 months ago when you turned on the engine and would immediately go away. Then it continued stopping at 500 rpms then at idle and now it continues up to 2000 rpm. I have spoken to the local vw dealer twice now, first they claimed it was the timing belt and tensioner, replaced it, still made the noise. Next was told that there are two screens that could be clogged, one in the oil pan, which is impossible to get at without pulling the engine, and the other screen was located under the valve cover, pulled it off and found no screen, called vw and was told no screen in my model.
I noticed a chain in the inside end of the valves, when the engine runs it is loud and comes from the area of theat chain, the chain appears in fine shape, tight, there is no signs of metal shavings or anywhere that parts may be hitting. The valves were all is good shape. The car runs fine and the gas mileage has not been effected at all. No oil leaks or idiot lights coming on. The car sounds like a diesel on alot of steroids. It is so loud and i fear something is going to blow on it.
Recently bought a MKV R32. Already had a magnaflow cbe, k&n panel filter, and some emissions stuff taken out from under the hood. not sure if it has been flashed, waiting to get a vagcom. think it is pretty stock other than that. My problem is about 2 weeks after I got it, I started to notice an exhaust leak or vacuum leak or both at higher RPMs, like above 3 or 4k it starts. The exhaust has a nice deep rumble in normal driving but when the leak noises start that is all you hear, the exhaust note disappears completely. I have tightened the clamps on the cbe and still does it. Not sure what to look for.
View 3 RepliesGoing to take a look at a 2000 v6 passat with 130k on it. They had the car serviced at Jiffy lube and now the engine makes a loud noise after running for a minute or so. The wrong oil was used. So I'm thinking the oil pump and screen are clogged up or the oil becomes to thin when warm therefore not providing proper lubrication.

View 4 RepliesThere is a loud ticking noise coming from an undetermined location in the engine compartment (sounds more like behind the motor). It starts on cold-start, lasts approximately a minute or so until the engine heats up. Driveability doesn't seem to be affected, and the engine doesn't have any additional weird symptoms. Some other VW owners have suggested changing the cam belt and tensioner to fix this problem, but the car has only just turned 45K miles and can't imagine that it would fail so quickly.
