View 3 RepliesMy son has a Saab 9-3 that we have spent several thousand dollars on repairing since we bought it for $3200 less than a year ago.The car has a little less than 100,000 miles on it. Now have about $7300 in it. Had motor rebuilt, water pump replaced and several other more minor repairs. Was driving it this weekend when he heard a loud whining sound then a puff of black smoke boiled out of the exhaust. It still turns over and runs but we had it towed to a shop. My husband things the turbo is shot. Could it be something other than the whole turbo having to be replaced? If it does, is this going to cost a fortune? Should we even put any more into this car? We have so much in it now that we hate to throw it away, but afraid of other major repairs adding to what we have already put in it.
View 1 RepliesI noticed last night that my cars turbo had a much louder whining noise when I accelerate. There is no blow off, doesn't sound like much air coming in and also there is not very much boost being put out at all. I've come to think that it may be a loose seal or gasket along the way but I'm sure hoping it isn't a pooched turbo... I don't have a boost gauge so checking boost pressure isn't an option right now. Just noticed from putting foot down but no boost.
View 1 RepliesOK, so my b5 has been sitting for about 3 weeks now because I didnt have the money to fix it. Now I do but before I fix it I wanna kno exactly whats wrong with it. Basically it will go into gear when the cars OFF but it wont go into any gear when its ON. Clutch still grabs because the car will jump forward if started while in gear.

I purchased my 99 vw passat 1.8t about a year ago with 108k miles, currently i am at 128k. Unbeknownst to me since I have owned it my mechanic was changing the oil with regular oil.
One year and 20k miles later....1 month after an oil change my oil light came on. I took it in and it was dry. There are no noticable leaks (my driveway and radiator fluid are clean). I understand using regular oil instead of the recommended synthetic can destroy your turbo, and that regular oil can get burned up in the turbo and emitted into the exhaust.
Does this sound like a turbo problem? If so how do I know if it is completely destroyed or not? I am monitoring the oil everyday now and switching back to synthetic this weekend...I am hoping that there may be a smaller issue I can get fixed rather than replacing the entire turbocharger, if that is in fact what the problem is.
My passat turbo went out a while back and cant figure out why? The Idle is the same as always was, engine is smooth while driving and changing gears, but the boost is very very low but not completely out. All vaccum lines are connected and cant hear the diaphram releasing like it used to abviously cause there's no pressure.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2011 F250 that I bought new. It's been the best truck I have ever owned. It now has about 105K miles (170k Kms). Lately the turbo has started whining at low speeds and idling. Is this something I should be concerned about. I talked to a diesel mechanic (not Ford) and he said this is fairly common in some vehicles.
View 6 RepliesMy truck's been doing this ever since I got it when the engine is cold. Haven't brought it up to a dealer yet because I'm not sure it's a real problem, and since it only does it when it's cold I'd have to leave it overnight.
It seems to happen when the turbo hits a certain RPM. I got it on video but you can't really hear it until the end when I raise the RPMs a bit.

I got a brand new turbo installed on my 99 Passat 1.8T... i took it out of the shop and everything worked fine for a few kms (the turbo was installed by a mechanic and i was there for the installation, i made sure he connected all the hoses ext...). after some time I am driving on the highway with around 110 and i decide to pass someone so i drop it down to 3rd gear, the revs go up to 3500 and the car started choking up(exactly the same thing as if the Air Mass Flow sensor was disconnected or removed) the problem continued. I disconnected the battery to restart the computer, also i have a brand new air filter and a brand new gas filter. If the new turbo is pushing more boost could it be that the car is not getting enough air through the regular intake?
View 2 RepliesI have a 99 Volkswagen Passat 1.8 Turbo Automatic AEB engine. I recently did a rebuild on it and ever since I keep getting this code P0301 that says "cylinder 1 misfire". The engine is also running rich and the spark plug in cylinder 1 keeps getting gummed up. I've changed the coil and the spark plugs and the injectors and it works temporarily but then the problem keeps reoccurring.
View 7 RepliesI have a 1999 passat 1.8t with 197k miles. When I drive if you listen really closely the engine makes a pretty cool sound like a turbo winding. It's a really really low whooooooo on the first and second gear. You cant hear it unless you have the windows down and there's like no other cars. Is this normal? My friend said the turbo might be going bad ?
View 5 RepliesSo my CEL is on. My turbo seems like it's constantly on, there doesn't seem to be any boost, and lowered power. So I have been wondering what this could be.
View 10 Replies99 volkswagen passat 1.8T ... The turbo have like a fluttering noise when i let off, I just installed a APR chip. Is it a dieverter valve or something.
View 2 RepliesIs it bad if there is oil coming out of the valve cover breather going into the turbo inlet? I noticed the sides of the turbo inlet on the top is lightly covered in oil.
View 3 RepliesWhen i accelerate, i can hear the turbo, i don't know if its a problem though.
I drive a 18 wheeler for work, and sometimes when i'm goin down a hill and i accelerate, i get no power, just hearing the turbo loud and clear with no power.
But i barely hear it on the passat, i don't know if its good or bad.
I took the wagon to the dealer for servicing due to an oil leak. However, before taking it in, I put the car up on ramps and took a peek to see what was the culprit. I noticed that oil was dripping from the turbo area. Nine days ago they performed the following repair:
--> Cause:Gasket for the turbocharger pipe leaking.
--> Fix: Installed a new gasket, added engine dye to check for any other leaks and no more leaks were found after repair.
However, today I noticed oil in my garage floor again from the same spot.
So about 30 minutes ago my exhaust broke between the turbo and cat. I guess I could weld it back but the pipe is a little rusty. Should I just get a turbo back and call it good and if so what brand and where do I get one for a 01 passat 1.8t
View 1 RepliesWell I just put a junkyard motor in my cousins 06 passat. Fired it up today runs great and runs smooth. The only thing that concerns me is the top end makes some noise. Is this normal for this direct injected engine? Sound like its coming from the injector area and the injection pump......
View 2 RepliesMy turbo is leaking a bit and i cant tell whats up with it.. The feed lines look good but idk I just took a quick glance between classes today... what kind of mileage life does the stock turbo have?? i have 134k on it...and it seems to build boost fine but it wine of the turbo is getting louder by the day....time for a new one??? is the k04 ok...i just want a little more umph... I don't want to get crazy does the k04 bolt strait up??? and i found a dealer that does custom manifolds [URL] ....
Yes I have heard that the gt28rs...and like turbos....but i have looked at the dyno sheets and i want low-end torque...i drive mostly free way so shifting in city traffic is a nonissue...but i just been glancing at post so I am probably mistaken... is it a good idea to replace the entire system at once...(turbo, downpipe, exhaust, dv and intercooler, and piping)...and then in turn have to get a new ecu... I am kinda strapped for cash... i have never done this stuff and i searched and read up that i should do all of it but i wanted a first person conversation about it... fyi...timing belt and valves and head went over (always ask if the timing belt has been changed. my first used car dealer experience) and clutch are brand new less that 1000 miles ...
Will a 2011 Chevy Cruze 1.4L turbo engine wear out / break down / fail sooner than a 2011 Chevy Cruze 1.8L engine ( w/o the turbo ) ? Both being automatic transmissions. Driven by the same person. What is the gas mileage difference between the same two ?
View 17 RepliesSo a week ago the Check Engine light comes on. I take it in and just got a call that the Secondary Cooling Pump has failed. Apparently it's a pump that cools down the turbo and other things after the car is shut off. I only have 44,000 miles on the TDI too.
