OK, so my b5 has been sitting for about 3 weeks now because I didnt have the money to fix it. Now I do but before I fix it I wanna kno exactly whats wrong with it. Basically it will go into gear when the cars OFF but it wont go into any gear when its ON. Clutch still grabs because the car will jump forward if started while in gear.
1999 Passat 1.8 Turbo
I took my car in for the 10,000 mile service on friday. The tech noted that there is an active TSB for the 1.8 TSI engine that addresses an issue with the turbo engaging just before the shift from first to second gear resulting in a non-progressive throttle response. I told him that I didn't seem to really notice that issue, but to go ahead an install the software update anyway. He did. I'm surprised at the difference. The throttle is much more progressive and I feel like I have better control of the throttle. I highly recommend this update. This may also explain why the 2015 Passats with the same engine have a higher MPG rating than the 2014s. If this update prevents the turbo from coming on unnecessarily then that would certainly save on gas.

View 3 RepliesI purchased my 99 vw passat 1.8t about a year ago with 108k miles, currently i am at 128k. Unbeknownst to me since I have owned it my mechanic was changing the oil with regular oil.
One year and 20k miles later....1 month after an oil change my oil light came on. I took it in and it was dry. There are no noticable leaks (my driveway and radiator fluid are clean). I understand using regular oil instead of the recommended synthetic can destroy your turbo, and that regular oil can get burned up in the turbo and emitted into the exhaust.
Does this sound like a turbo problem? If so how do I know if it is completely destroyed or not? I am monitoring the oil everyday now and switching back to synthetic this weekend...I am hoping that there may be a smaller issue I can get fixed rather than replacing the entire turbocharger, if that is in fact what the problem is.
My passat turbo went out a while back and cant figure out why? The Idle is the same as always was, engine is smooth while driving and changing gears, but the boost is very very low but not completely out. All vaccum lines are connected and cant hear the diaphram releasing like it used to abviously cause there's no pressure.
View 2 RepliesI got a brand new turbo installed on my 99 Passat 1.8T... i took it out of the shop and everything worked fine for a few kms (the turbo was installed by a mechanic and i was there for the installation, i made sure he connected all the hoses ext...). after some time I am driving on the highway with around 110 and i decide to pass someone so i drop it down to 3rd gear, the revs go up to 3500 and the car started choking up(exactly the same thing as if the Air Mass Flow sensor was disconnected or removed) the problem continued. I disconnected the battery to restart the computer, also i have a brand new air filter and a brand new gas filter. If the new turbo is pushing more boost could it be that the car is not getting enough air through the regular intake?
View 2 RepliesI have a 99 Volkswagen Passat 1.8 Turbo Automatic AEB engine. I recently did a rebuild on it and ever since I keep getting this code P0301 that says "cylinder 1 misfire". The engine is also running rich and the spark plug in cylinder 1 keeps getting gummed up. I've changed the coil and the spark plugs and the injectors and it works temporarily but then the problem keeps reoccurring.
View 7 RepliesI have a 1999 passat 1.8t with 197k miles. When I drive if you listen really closely the engine makes a pretty cool sound like a turbo winding. It's a really really low whooooooo on the first and second gear. You cant hear it unless you have the windows down and there's like no other cars. Is this normal? My friend said the turbo might be going bad ?
View 5 RepliesI have this odd turbo squeal in 1st and 2nd gear WOT at low rpm... turbo is new and was replaced in june of this year... had no issues with it up till probably a few weeks ago when the squealing started... it doesn't happen in any other gear at WOT, just 1st and 2nd... where do I start looking?

I noticed that the turbo sounds kind of weird when it first spins up in 2nd and 3rd gear. Kind of a rattly whoosh noise before the normal whistle. Is it normal? I thought it was the "noise maker" thing, but FWIW the 2011's don't have it.
View 4 RepliesMy car was having a strange power issue after I went stage 1+. This occurred 3 separate times and always at the same moment in acceleration. I would be on the highway on ramp shifting from 5th to 6th and the car would just die, the turbo completely quit functioning. When this occurred the car had no power and would consume fuel like crazy. Each time this happened it was over 90 degrees outside. If I parked the car and let it sit for 10 minutes before re-starting it would be back to normal. Since going 2+ this has not occurred. I don't know if this was a protection mode implemented by the ecu or what.
View 8 RepliesI just spent $658.22 on a EGR flow valve on my 2007 mazdaspeed 6 with 55,000 miles on it. This after two years of complaining about a shutter right before turbo boosts. Now I am having difficulty getting the car into 1st gear and 2nd gear. Took it to the dealer "can't duplicate". As I am driving away from the dealer I grind 2nd. Took it back to the dealer, went down the street with the service manager and grinded 2nd gear again. The service manager says "I'm shifting too slow". I am really concerned all Mazda dealers are waiting for warranty to go bad before they repair anything. Powertrain warranty is up at 60k something tells me I am going to pay for it. Why I am having difficulty in 1st and 2nd gear?
View 1 RepliesJust bought my 2013 Platinum 350 DRW 2 weeks ago. 9,000 miles on it. I was cruising along yesterday at around 45 mph in 6th gear going up a slight incline. Truck was fairly low rpm don't remember what exactly. As I'm going up this hill it begins to shudder quite a bit almost seemed like the turbo shuddering while lugging up the hill at a low rpm in 6th. I stepped into the throttle to get it to downshift into 5th and it stopped. I never experienced anything remotely like this in my 2011 6.7.
View 6 RepliesMy truck is fairly new. Its a 2015 Ford F350 with 6000 Miles. I live on the east coast in a 4 seasons climate. Its summer the average temp. is in the lower 90's. Recently, I have noticed that my truck has been shuddering and shaking between 5th & 6th gear.
It started when I was changing lanes; I tried to accelerate going about 45mph, and shuddering real hard. It was difficult to maintain my speed on a level surface. It was almost a total loss of power with no trouble codes.
I just got 99 Passat with 1.8T. It kicks in 5th gear only at 45mph or later, never any earlier. Don't have much experience with 4cyl Passat, is this norm. or should I get the transmission checked....

View 10 RepliesI have a 1999 Passat Sedan, V6 with automatic transmission, 62K miles. The Transmission has started slipping from 1st > 2nd, particularly up hills. Took it to my local mechanic who referred me to the AAMCO next door. They changed out the fluid and filter. No luck; still slipping. They want to do a transmission repair (soft parts) for $1650 with a 12-month warranty. For what it's worth, the TCU was replaced last spring (sunroof drain clog > flood > destroyed TCU and a lot more). Everything was working OK this spring after the repairs.
