View 2 Replies1998 Passat 1.8T Sedan, Manual, 118k miles, new head at ~ 87k due to broken timing belt. (Changed oil approximately 1.5-2k miles ago, no loss of oil evident). No noticeable loss of power. No MIL and no DTCs in storage.
But there does seem to be a bit of exhaust (puff....puff.....puff...) that seems to be coming from under the turbo side of the engine, but it is hard to tell.
Recently - over the last couple of weeks - noticed at start-up in morning, significant amounts of blue smoke from exhaust - eventually subsides to nothing after a couple of minutes. BUT, it only seems to appear when the car is angled with its nose slightly up in the driveway and not with its nose down. Lack of it occurring with its nose down was only tried twice; I may need to check it again.
After reading many posts, I thought it might be:
1) Oil overfill at last change - I noticed that my oil was less than 1/16" above the top bend. I doubted that would be the problem, but I siphoned off the small bit and it is within or just below the bend now (hard to read). It might be the oil since I used the Valvoline full synthetic MaxLife that is VW approved for the first time, but I find that hard to believe since I have been using synthetic for a couple of years now.
2) Oil getting into the combustion chamber via oil in the turbo system. Checked the low spot in the hose just before the throttle body. Seemed virtually dry; that's not the problem.
3) I guess it could still be oil gathering some place due to the failure of the turbo, but power seems quite normal.
4) Problem potentially with the PCV (actually called the breather and bleeder valves) and/or vacuum system being plugged up. After reading all of the posts regarding that I am starting to think (HOPE) that is it and not the turbo. While I do understand that flapper valves that are stuck would create greater pressure which could result in oil being forced into the chamber past the valve seats, I am not sure why the angle of the car while parked would matter since the higher pressure would only be occurring while driving; and the blue smoke goes away after driving and doesn't appear until next morning. But perhaps I am missing something.
Particularly which valves I should check/clean if I am seeing this smoking exhaust at start-up, but only when the car is parked with the nose up?
5) Sticky valves at the back-side (cabin-side of the engine)?
As the title states I have lots of blue smoke out the exhaust and the smell of burnt oil. Checking other posts it looks like it could be a diverter valve, a pcv valve or the Turbo. I checked on line and autozone and parts America say these are not required for my car. I checked my Hanes manual (yes, that's all I have) and they don't have the DV or the pcv listed.

My dad was driving behind me and said that black smoke was coming out of the exhaust, is this normal???
View 7 RepliesI have been searching online for days trying to find out why my car is smoking. i recently broke the oil pan on my 03 vw passat 1.8T. When I broke it I didn't know what had happened and I am sure all the oil drained completely out. The turn off engine now light came on and immediately shut car off! But I am not sure if i did in time before doing any major damage. my husband replaced the oil pan with a new one and everything seemed to be running good. i drove it for about 10 days and i noticed a whitish (I am not really sure of the color cause it was in my rear view mirror and couldn't see well) smoke coming from the exhaust as i was accelerating to get on the highway lasted about maybe 5sec then stopped. it has since done it 2 more times as i am getting on the highway but not every time. There are no fluid loss doesn't overheat when driving it all the fluids are good. I thought maybe head gasket or cracked head but husband says its not. the last it did it i stopped driving it in hopes to find out why its SMOKING!!!
View 3 RepliesI have a ton of white smoke coming from my exhaust pipe only after it ran a long time then is started back up ????
View 7 RepliesMy 2001.5 Passat traditionally does not start easily when it is less than 6degrees outside. Today it was that cold..it started easily..but about 30 minutes into my drive to work..I realized it was a little smoky and exhaustish smelling in the car..once I realized it wasn't the car next to me..i realized if I turned off the heat..the smell went away..but at the stoplight..i could see smoke coming from under the hood..out the corner by the passenger/dashboard... Car has 80,000, recent oil change, what it is?
View 1 RepliesI have a 98 abe motor 105k on it, since i have had it its had like a lifter tap, im assuming its coming from the chain tensioner. i had the head worked on after broken timing belt about 2000 miles ago still no change.
View 2 RepliesWhy it won't work. copper exhaust coming off the headers. I have the ability to get it and bend it and how cool would that be copper duals. Why won't it work. If I bolt it right to the headers.
View 7 RepliesI got this hankering to re-do my exhaust while my truck is all dissembled. My true dual has been a mistake since day one. It never gave me that deep growl that I wanted, and I miss my old cat back. Anyway I thought of an idea that would give me my one muffler back with plenty of air going into it. Check out the pics, and let me hear it. I will be leaving the pipes coming out of the headers alone, that way I don't have to buy doug thorleys expensive y-pipe.
View 2 RepliesI recently pulled the head gaskets on my '98 RAM 1500's 360 Magnum and after two weeks of waiting on the machine shop I've put everything back in and to torque specs. After a battle with the starter ending in pulling all the shims I painstakingly marked I got it to fire up. But, it is now idling roughly. I burped the coolant system, checked the oil level and removed some as it was slightly overfilled.
I also had an exhaust leak so I checked torque specs on the exhaust manifold. All of this worked marginally but when I felt comfortable moving the vehicle I found that in gear with the throttle open it would sputter, idling it moves along just fine. The engine is pulling air weakly through the filter and I noticed it is blowing a little white smoke when given gas. My OBD2 reader doesn't pull up any codes, I'm at my wits end.
1998 Nissan Altima with 150,000. It has been well maintained and had many of the major repairs completed. There is still something wrong that annoys the heck out of me. When in "P"ark, the exhaust makes a pop, like there is too much or too little exhaust. It enough to be audible when I am in the front seat. The tach drops maybe 50-100 RPM when it pops. It happens maybe once every 30-60 seconds.
View 2 RepliesI have a 98 F150 4x4 Super Cab 4.6 auto that has a leaking exhaust manifold. I changed both manifolds about 3 years ago and the passenger side bank is leaking again. I haven't gotten into yet to see if its just the gasket or the manifold itself. My question is does anyone know of a set of headers I can put on the truck that will bolt up to the existing exhaust? If I make the switch to headers I don't want to have to redo the whole exhaust system.
View 3 RepliesI have a 98 accord Ex. Just a couple of days ago the exhaust system started to rattle. I crawled under the the car and found that the exhaust pipes were pretty rusted. However I couldn't decide which parts of exhaust system should be replaced: the muffler, exhaust pipes, or the catalytic converter? Is there any tips to identify the broken parts?
View 4 RepliesI noticed liquid leaking from the area between the B exhaust pipe and the muffler. The B exhaust pipe is simply the long exhaust pipe that attaches to the A pipe, or center exhaust pipe near the front. I think the leak is water. It's a slow leak/drip that appears to be coming from the gasket. I have a 1.6L 1998 Honda Civic DX.
View 6 RepliesI have a 98 Ranger 3.0 with a standard transmission. The truck has 240,500 miles so far. It runs just as good as the day I got it 11 years ago, doesn't use any oil and still gets 23 MPG. Last fall, it developed what sounds like an exhaust leak under the hood. It seems to be coming from the area of the EGR valve. The trouble is that I can't feel it or smell it. I have carefully felt the entire length of the tube running from the EGR to the exhaust manifold and cannot feel any leaks. There is no soot or any other evidence of an exhaust leak.
The noise isn't there for the first minute or so that the truck is running. I would think that if I had a cracked manifold or some other such leak, it would be worse when the engine is cold but this is not the case for me. It is most noticeable when pulling a hill as slow speeds in a higher gear. I have checked for codes (no CEL) and there are none. When I first heard it I figured that I would wait until it gets a little worse and I would be able to find it. Its been been over 8 months now it has remained the same.
1998 Jeep Cherokee sport ... My mechanic tells me that my #1 fuel injector is always spraying and that that is why the jeep runs rough. This is after he already told me that my injectors were clogged and needed to be replaced (which he did). When the car is idling for a while, the exhaust really begins to smell like gas, so this seems to make some sense to me, unlike his previous diagnosis. But now he is telling me that I need to replace the computer to fix this problem.
View 8 RepliesSo I had a friend looking at my car to see if I needed new catalytic converters. When he was revving up the engine there was gas coming out of the bank1 exhaust. I heard possibly the fuel injectors? If so is there a way to test them and how many does my car have? I am planing on getting all spark plugs and coil packs changed asap. 2000 Lincoln ls sports package v6
View 14 RepliesI have a 2002 Durango, the #3 Exhaust rocker arm keeps coming off, it was took back to car lot and they installed it. It lasted a day, now the shop has replaced rocker, and lifter, changed oil to 5W-30 and tried another camshaft. It starts and runs but by the time you get a block it starts again. The old cam was worn on the same #3 cylinder but we think driving it with arm off caused the damage. The spring feels still when we try pushing it down with a prybar, can a spring be changed on the vehicle?
View 2 RepliesI have a 2003 SC430 with 170,000 miles on the odo. It runs great, but the exhaust smell is killing me. I'm pretty sure it's normal for an 11 year old car, but I want to eliminate it.
Do you know what part or part(s) I might be able to replace to eliminate the foul smell?
I recently purchased Sonata NF 2006, with L4 engine with 108 miles on it. I noticed that mpg is very low - 16-17 50/50 city and highway. The engine runs smooth and pretty fast for 4 cylinder engine, there is no smoke coming from the exhaust. While driving with A/C on i did not notice any pressure on generator or anything like that.
