I am completely lost now, spent alot of time trying to get the pulley off to replace the bearing, finally got that done, turned on the car, and it dies almost instantly unless i have my foot on the gas.... it runs really rough until i rev it up to at least 2K.
View 8 RepliesThe problem I'm having is with a 1994 mercury sable 3.8Let me start off with the things I've fixed, water pump, thermostat, radiator, complete head job done profesionally, and fan is straight wired to run on high all the time.
Now the interesting part. The car immediately overheard when the AC is turned on and only when it's on. It only overheats when your moving, not when your in park or in stopped traffic. What the heck is going on with it? All fluids are changed regularly and full. i unplugged the temp gauge sensor when running and it did not drop the needle does this mean it's bad?
I have a 99 Merc Sable, only 75,000 miles. Car has ran smooth, no issues. Until, I had ran over a blown tire. Pulled gas line off filter. Replaced it. Everything seemed fine. But turns out, I think anyhow this is when this happened. My car started having shifting problem, found problem within a few days. Transmission bottom cooler line came off. I fixed it but sadly was a little too late a week later tranny died. Just had it replaced. Here's where I need experienced minds. After getting my car back 5Miles down as car shifted there was a pull back and engine light came on. I toom back to mechanic owner said my front engine mounts were bad. One of his mechanics told me secretly they are not bad. He ran diagnostic test nothing came back, they test drove it but of course it didnt do anything. As soon as I left work it pulled light came back on. I pulled over looked at engine as it was running. The engine moves as if its rearing up. Best way I can explain it. Is there something they could of broke or didn't put together right to cause this?
View 5 RepliesI am not sure which it is but I cannot turn the pulley by hand. How do you tell if the pulley is bad or the whole compressor? I went out to start the truck and it wouldn't start. It died so I restarted it and then I seen the smoke from the front of the truck. I opened the hood and the flipping belt was just hanging there. Is there a way to just bypass the unit for now? I wont be needing the AC till summer and that is several months away.

View 1 RepliesMy truck will turn over very strong but will not crank. it cranked one time then died immediatly. 30 min later it cranked and ran for about 5 min then died again. Alternator, fuel pump.
Gas v10 motor, full of gas, new spark plugs.
A month ago I was pulling onto Hwy 5 and the car stalled. I pulled over and restarted the car - no prob. But, the check engine light came on. I took it to the shop and they said that the check engine light code said there was a problem with the fuel pump. Unfortunately they couldn't find anything wrong with the pump. They reset the check engine light and it didn't come back on and the car ran fine...until Sunday.
On Sunday, I tried to start the car. It would start but only ran for a second or two and then shut down. I took it back to the shop thinking it was the fuel pump failing but they say the fuel pump seems ok, they've replaced the fuel filter but it still won't start. They seem to flummoxed. What might be going on?
2002 sable v ... Replaced egr sensor and idle motor and pvc valve. Idles at park but in gear after 2000 rpm.... High idle back till 2 mins while driving but put it in neutral and idle comes back and stays till drive - 2000 rpm then bad ??? No codes ....
View 11 RepliesThis first started happening about a year ago. started the car and it seemed fine to put it in gear to drive stepped on the gas and there was no power. the car moved forward slowly and felt like the engine was skipping and catching and then it would die. took it to the shop and it started right up first try for them. they drove it and it was fine. ever since then, it happens at random times on and off. I'm not sure if its bad fuel or something it just doesn't make sense to me.

View 2 RepliesI have a '99 Mercury Sable with the 3.0 24 Valve DOHC V6. The car occasionally will not start. It only happens after the car has been driven and warmed up, shut off, and then an attempted restart. This problem has occurred in all sorts of temps. Sometimes it will start within 30 minutes, sometimes it takes overnight. But it will start. I have already replaced the fuel pump relay. Is the fuel pump needing to be replaced (b/c it is failing slowly), or is this problem located somewhere else?

View 6 RepliesI have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0L V8. Recently it has developed a squeak in one of the pulley wheels. I think it is the middle one but it may be the alternator. My question is can I change these pulleys or do I even need to? My mechanic said its nothing to worry about but I am of the opinion that bad news does not get better with age. A squeak indicates that something is not right.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2000 Mercury Sable that will not start. The battery is good. All the dash lights come on when you turn the key and I can hear the fuel pump, pump up. The starter does not make any noise, nothing happens at all.
View 2 RepliesAbout once or twice a month my 2000 Trailblazer dies immediately on starting. Will not start again for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes rest it always restarts. Never dies while running. Have had fuel pump replaced about five years ago. Condition has been occurring about that long though and has progressed from once each 3 or 4 months to its current rate. Can occur after setting all night or after having just run and shut down for a very short time. Natural assumption would be fuel pump but as it always restarts on second attempt after 10 minute rest is there any possibility it could be a computer malfunction that takes that long to reset?
View 7 RepliesMy Highlander with only 72K miles has an intermittent problem. I start it and it immediately dies. To get it going, as soon as engines starts I push and hold accelerator at about 1500 rpm for about 3 minutes, then ease off accelerator and generally no problem for the rest of the day. Been to regular mechanic with it twice, but car doesn't do it then. May go several weeks without this happening, then will have a series of these episodes. Not battery. Not throttle body. Mechanic doesn't think it's the type of gas being used.
View 3 RepliesSo this has happened twice ( a month apart ) and at very random times. One time just turning around on a dirt road all of the sudden car goes off. Open the door and the dinging noise when you door opens sort of comrs on but extremely faint so I get out pop the hood and I yanked the negative cable off and then retouch it to the post ( there should be a click or mini zap or sound of connection) no sign of connection whatsoever . So im thinking battery incompletely died out for some reason so I go get a jumper pack but b4 I put it on I go and try the touching the negative cable back to post and what do you know, sign of connection and I get in the car and she starts up and acts like nothing is wrong and it has worked normal ever since until sunday two days ago coming home from watkins glen.
I went to the nascar race at the glen and was driving homea ( a lot of driving that day 2 hrs there and back and I was speeding alot in excess of 110mph on a few occasions) car worked normal all day and like 30 miles from home all of the sudden I am doing 60 and all the dash lights come on and the car completely dies sorta like symptoms of an alternator dying but extremely accelerated so I know its not the alternator. So I throw it in neutral (mtx by the way) and coast to a stop. I turn the key to on and try accessory stuff like radio and the car shows no sign of life just like ladt time basically. So I get out and do the touching of the negative cable to post thing again and just like last time NOTHING. .
And so I just sit there for ten minutes scratching my head and thinking and then I try one more time like last time, touch the cable to post and I get the click of connection and get in the car and its been working well since sunday BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT BLOODY HELL IS CAUSING THIS!!!! Just a side note my gas gauge doesn't always work properly it will read empty when the tank is full but fix it self and go to correct position it just goes out intermittently but I don't think its related to my possessed electrical nightmare or whatever is killing my car at random
A minor but persistent (year-long) rough idle on my 1991 240 has quickly turned into a Cold Start Nightmare over the past month:
SITTING HOURS OVERNIGHT (50 to 60-degree temp. overnight) - When I attempt to start in the morning, the engine idles high for 3-5 seconds and then immediately dies. To successfully start, I must keep pressing the accelerator pedal at least half-way down for 2-3 minutes. The engine sputters, almost backfires, shakes, lopes, almost dies, etc. After 2-3 minutes, everything runs just fine.
WARM ENGINE SITTING - Once the engine is warmed up, it will consistently start without problems. Still a slightly rough idle, but OK. The car does not die.
I have changed the battery, coolant temp. sensor, and spark plug wires.
I recently acquired a 2003 Mercury Sable from a friend and there is a problem with the air conditioning. The car has digital controls. I select the Max AC button, turn the temperature all the way down (60) an the fan all the way up, but it only blows warm air. I can hear and see the AC compressor cycling fairly quickly. The clutch (I think) engages for about one second and it will reengage after about 5 seconds, but again, it only says engaged for about one second.
What could be the problem? I've read the AC system might not have enough pressure and needs to be recharged. Or... the orifice tube is clogged, bad AC pressure switch, or the actuator that closes the heater door might be disconnected.
How quickly should a properly functions AC compressor cycle? The car was not driven much over the past year or two as it was my friend's grandfathers. I may end up taking it to a shop but I don't want to get ripped off. How should I approach this?
