Mazda - 2300 :: Engine Misses At Steady Speed
Nov 2, 2015
[URL] .... Mazda 2.3 Liter 4 cyl. accelerates fine in all gears, but once you reach a steady speed in any gear, it jerks and bumps. Does not run smooth unless you are accelerating?

I recently had intake manifold gaskets replaced in my 98 gmc sierra 4x4 pickup 5.7 . The day I drove it home from the shop it ran fine, even day after but the next day I noticed it seem to idle a little rough and even at normal driving, sometimes seems worse than others. No service engine light has yet to come on. Could there be vacuum leak, trash in intake or bad wires and plugs. Plugs, wires, rotor button and distributor cap are only year and half old.

I've noticed the Prius V engine is running at very low RPM in ECO mode at steady speed of about 65km/h (40mph). Fuel consumption vary between about 4-5L/100km (58 - 47mpg) and RPM is showing about 1100+
I usually see RPM of about 1100 to 1400+ which is very good; so I'm not surprised this engine is very fuel efficient.

Diagnosing our 2006 Hyundai Sonata.....2.4 L engine....automatic.
While cruising along, about 40mph and up I guess...when traveling at a steady throttle and engine speed... if you ever so slightly give it more gas, sometimes it will act as though it is losing power for a second and then kick back in.....but revs will stay up....
I was thinking either throttle position sensor or (gasp) transmission.....it doesn't really feel like a slipping tranny....but wondering if it is issues with the overdrive...

5 miles to the airport last night, cruising on the freeway, my transmission suddenly accelerates from the steady 3000 rpm to 3500 rpm. When I press on the accelerator, the engine speed and my actual speed are no longer in sync. It feels like the transmission is no longer shifting. The radio cuts out and all the lights dim. My airbag warning light flashes intermittently at me. I make it to the airport, afraid to turn the key off; but I must. I attempt a restart - nothing. All red lights but no engine cranking. What gives? A fuse, the alternator? The car - 2003 mazda protege. The driver - stranded when I return home.

When I rev the engine it momentarily goes down to below normal idling speed (sometimes it completely shuts off)then goes up to normal idle. I have found that if I press the throttle too hard before it recovers it always shuts off.

I have a Mazda 626 (V6) with about 150K miles and a funny engine racing problem. It occurs only when I'm going highway speeds (for me, 70MPH) and the car has been running for about 15 minutes. The engine will race, then chug and RPMs will drop down again, then it will race, etc. If I slow down, it will stop racing, but often start again as soon as I put my foot back on the gas pedal. If I don't get on the highway (running 60MPH and under), the car is completely fine.
I've taken it to my mechanic twice; the first time had the fuel filter replaced, the second time got new spark plugs, but it's still doing it. What else it might be?

I just have a situation that I would like some insight into. I have a 2004 T-reg V6 that jerks while at a constant speed (usually around 40-50 mph). It does it both while cruise is engaged and disengaged. You can also hear a rhythmic "clunk"ing. The jerking and clunking stop if you accelerate or decelerate.
BTW the car is still under full aftermarket warranty from the dealership where we bought it so I would want to try to figure out what this is before the warranty ends.

Our Egg will occasionally surge at steady speeds - i.e it will jerk fore and aft with no change in accelerator pedal settings. This is an intermittent problem that seems worse when ambient temperatures are low. It isn't yet annoying enough to warrant a trip to the dealer (they seem clueless about this car anyway!).

This is a 2002 Toyota Camry 4cyl with 249157 miles. I drove it 140 miles to work, noticed no issues, parked it, and got back in after 10 hours. On the way back I noticed a noise that got louder the faster I went. It is independent of the engine revolutions (I put the car in neutral and "coasted"). The noise is completely dependent on the speed of my forward movement.
So I put the car up and in gear and around 25/30 mph, the sound shows up and gets worse as the speed increases. It does not get worse in turns. And it is very consistent- not clunking or clicking, just a steady sounds almost like strong wind over an object. I replaced the wheel bearings in both front wheel assemblies about a year and a half ago.

My 1990 nissan pathfinder 4x4 has a bad vibration shakes all over when driving at steady speed around 50 to 55 mph, it goes away when you let up on the gas and when you accelerate.

Car runs just fine except I do notice the RPM's moving a bit up while I'm cruising at a steady speed. Almost as if the clutch is slipping. It's an Auto, btw.

I have a really weird issue with my 2003 Ford Focus. Manual transmission, just over 50,000 miles. I've been noticing a stumble or hesitation (like the engine is cutting out) at steady speed, but ONLY when it is snowy out, more if it's windy as well. I don't recall that this happens if it's rainy or foggy. All maintenance is performed as specified, to include air filter changes.

While going a steady speed, my speedometer will fluctuate up and down around 3 miles per hour. It will happen at any speed.

R32 has 29,000 miles. I live at 8000ft. Recently, my R, when traveling back from sea level, starts to have what seems like fueling issues at around 7000ft. These take place by the car being unable to maintain a steady speed and then losing power. Once power falls you can press on accelerator and then will pick up again and accelerate through the gears until you need to back of the accelerator, then the same problem will happen... Once home after lurching around like a kangaroo the car will be fine if switched off and then left for an hour before driving again.

I have a 2000 Tahoe with the 5.3L V-8, 351,000 (yes that is correct) miles. Runs great except it has recently developed a stutter, hesitation, skip, I don't really know how to describe it, under acceleration or at steady speed. This is an intermittent problem and it is driving me batty. The only codes are a P0420, maybe after 350k miles it needs replaced? Would that possibly cause this issue, or am I looking at something more sinister?

Wanted to query the collective wisdom here: last few days, been getting a strong grinding/vibration rolling along, but only under steady speed or slowing down. Early in any trip its barely noticeable, but after an hour on the highway it can resonate pretty strongly. Gets worse with speed. Goes away completely under acceleration.
Doesn't get better or worse with brake application, stays exactly the same if I pop the tranny into neutral and roll along.
2008 B6 Sedan (trendline in Canada) - 103000 km (roughly 60000 miles)
Couple of possibly related observations: tires are down to their last 1/3 of life (but fairly even wear across all 4), brakes do need attention (bit of a pulse on application), and when I was switching from snows to summers I noticed a small splash of grease on the driver side CV boot - couldn't see a split but I don't think it should have been there.
My thoughts: possibly CV joint going, or really need new rotors...

1.5L with automatic and 90K miles. In December going 60 mph on the highway at steady speed the car stalled, would not restart, towed home, tried new fuel pump relay, made no difference, put old relay in and it started, ran great for 6 months and now after filling up the tank, I hit a bump and went around a corner and it stalled again, same scenario, towed home and it started the next day. Been running fine since. Ground on fuel pump/ bad gas? another relay in the fuel pump circuit?

It is difficult to explain (and google) but my 1.4 16V Golf 4 does this sometimes: while driving at a steady speed car jerks for a moment and revs drop quite much, a moment later it is fine. It feels like I had stepped on the brakes, but when I actually try that the revs won't drop as much. Like my engine seizes up for a fraction of a second but there is no noise. It has done that actually for 3 years, but it was really rare, about twice a year, but now I have had those jerks three days in a row.

Ok my 2002 337 has 87,600 miles on it and for quite a while now its been making a lot of font end noise, its most noticeable at 25-30 MPH, decelerating or holding a steady speed, it disappears when your accelerating hard, and at high speeds. But the noise is horrible, its like a buffeting
Its been serviced regularly, since the noise I've done, new front brake rotors, new pads, wheel bearings, inner and outer CV boots replaced, CV joint checked. My local mechanic who's done a lot of work for me isn't sure what to think, he said try rotating the tires because it may be tire noice on the road? Im running some generic tires, the brand on the tire says "sunny" but they appear to be a good performance tire, and handle well
