Malibu :: 2002 - Odor Of Gas And More Fuel Consumption
Dec 9, 2013
My 2002 6 cylinder Malibu gives an odor of gas when turning on the heater it has had a fuel pump and filter install 8 months ago and there has not been any smell until I used the heater this winter. I understand fuel consumption is more when using the heater but this is ridiculous I go around 8 or 10 miles and i've used more than a quarter of a tank.

So, my 2005 Gen II Prius went for a scheduled service on Wednesday, 70k miles, Toyota main dealer. They called and said it needed new front brake pads and disks, I was surprised but gave the go ahead. There would occasionally have been a mild squealing sound from the brakes at very low speed so I accepted the pads might need replacing, I was surprised the disks needed replacing but it hard to argue about brakes, especially as I only have the car a year (I'm the second owner and it has a full Toyota service history). It had a "major" service, new spark plugs, new front brake pads and disks.
Since collecting it I've noticed that the engine seems to kick in more often and needs higher revs. The fuel consumption seems higher, normally mid 50's MPG (imperial gallon) now 35MPG. However it hasn't been driven many miles since its been serviced so its a low distance for calculating MPG. I've also noticed that the car seems to slow more quickly without applying the brakes, a regularly driven hill that I coast down at 48kph now only gives 35kph. Also, if I drive on a flat road for a mile or 2 and coast to a stop the front brake disks feel VERY hot, way too hot to touch, drivers side more so that passenger side.

When I go out to do errands around town (I live right in town) I get horrendous gas mileage. Now, I understand gas mileage is high at the beginning of a trip, but for this long and this high and under these circumstances? I'm getting ABOVE 10l/100km when I have 80% charge available (for americans, that's disgustingly high MPG like, pick-up truck high), AND my foot is completely off the gas. Literally, coasting, or braking, and I'm still sucking up gas. What the heck?
Is this just because it takes a certain amount of time for the engine to run no matter what or something? I still don't see any reason for me to be eating up all that gas when my foot isn't even on the gas AND most importantly, I have charge available. Feels pointless for me to use my car for what I use it for 70% of the time, which is for quick errands around town at low speeds. Thought the prius was suppose to be a superstar for this kind of thing.

I changed the throttle body , PCV , clean the EGR tube and put new gasket in my Prius B 2010 hybrid.
The car was burn oil 1/2 liter per 1500km and since I changed the throttle body I noticed that the car burn 1/2 liter per 400 km .The job by the dealer.
Is there any problem in the installation?

We have two counters on MFD (1-trip data and 2-accumulated data), none of them show the gas consumption.
Every time I stop at gas station I have to divide distance by average gas consumption to know, beforehand, how many liters to top up the tank.
Question is: Is it possible to use VCDS to make the MFD show that information once it is obviously known by the board computer?

I just don't get what causes the Passat 1.8T to have worse fuel economy than expected considering its 0.27 drag coefficient, 3200lbs curb weight, and 4 cylinder 1.8t engine compared to a 3,500lbs 3.4 liter V6 0.31 cod Impala. I mean a new Ford Escape NON Hybrid SUV will get the fuel economy on the highway as a 1.8T Passat and that's sad considering that the Escape has the drag coefficient of a brick and the B5.5 Passats are among the 10 most aerodynamic cars ever sold in North America.

I have an old (fourth generation before 2005) and low performance bmw 316 at its 40 000 km (its been in garage for some time after it's done 19 000, then i bought it, so everything rubbery is problematic), i feel like it burns more fuel then it should considering its performance , since its almost 20 sec. from .naught to 60 , it has a more noticeable engine braking compared to my 2005 passat 1.6 (almost twice as effective), and a higher fuel consumption, when i stop the engine when idling, the rpm needle (or whatever it is, not a native speaker) drops to 0 immediately like in a millisecond or so.. no inertia no nothing, oil and everything is regularly checked up but i think there is something deeper going on.

How do I turn the "fuel consumption comparison" off? I want to see only the quantity and price off the gasoline I have consumed.
There isn't a "disable" feature, so I am guessing I set it to 0 mpg?

In Menu -> Info Phone -> Fuel Consumption
How can I reset the fuel consumption?
I couldn't find it on Owner Manual...

Since I got Prius I've noticed that driving at 50mph returns 80+mpg , 90+mpg if I let it gently glide at -1mph per 1 mile. As it gradually slows down, the mileage starts to decrease. By the time I get down to 45 mph the mileage shows around 70mpg,
I get down to 40mph, I'm only getting 50mpg. When I keep my speed between 40 and 45 I get about 52-55 mpg for the day. If I keep my speed between 45 and 50, I get 55-60mpg for the day.

I had idle travelling problem wich I solved changing AIT sensor. At the same time I cleaned MAF and TB with air sensor cleaner. Now my problem is cold start and driving 2nd and 3rd gear. Instantaneuous fuel consumption will go 20l to 50l driving 2nd and 3rd gear and if I stop values lowers like 20l...16l...10l... and finally on idle it stays in 0.8l/s. Average consumpion has increased 1l to 2l/100km.

I have been realizing that random every so often miles or months (varies completely) that my average fuel consumption resets itself and starts retaking brand new information and has discarded the old. Is this normal?

It's great on gas below 2200 rpm. Averaging 34 combined. However whenever I'm in a situation where I need to accelerate, such as beat the yellow light, up a hill, or pass someone and I shift to a lower gear I lose 1-2 MPG at the drop of a dime. And then it takes forever to recover. What is going on here? Is the engine being flooded with fuel?

I just read in Reader's Digest that some can improve gas mileage by 25% by not putting their car in reverse. This seems like an exaggeration, how can putting a car in reverse be that bad.... like 25% bad? Source: [URL] .....

I remember reading very recently about someone who found a fix to the strong fuel odor on cold starts. I can't seem to find it anywhere. I think it mentioned something about a bad ignition coil or something.

I have a 2007 Sante Fe. When I fill the tank (not even totally full) the car will have a fuel smell. The odd thing is that is comes more from the front part of the cabin, and only happens after filling up.
I have been very careful to make sure it is not about stepping in gasoline then getting in the car. It has been to the dealer twice for close to 3 weeks total. They smell it but cannot figure it out.

Have taken my 2004 CRV to the dealer 5 times over the last 6 months because I smell gas after turning the vehicle off. I mostly smell it when I get out of the car. The smell is coming from the gas tank area, but there are no visible leaks.
The dealer has smoked it, replaced the gas cap, replaced a fuel sensor, done pressure tests which were negative, and now is recommending replacing the entire fuel sending system, which I believe is the fuel pump and something else. I consulted a mechanic friend who take off the cover under the back seat which exposes the top of the tank and we put soapy water around the top of the tank where the fuel pump attaches while pumping air into the sealed off tank.
We were hoping that it might just be a bad gasket but there were no visible air bubbles. Now another mechanic is suggesting that I have a small leak in the seams of my gas tank and wants to drop the tank to see if there are signs of leakage. Seems like I keep spending more and more money on guesses.? I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of this car as I get headaches after driving for more than 20 minutes, not to mention the headache I have from having this problem drag on...
