Well a picture says a thousand words so that plastic cover?/roof tonneau?/whatever is rattling when the top is up. Its a bit annoying when everything else in the cabin is tomb quiet so im going to try to remedy it tomorrow with some adhesive silicone. The same stuff that prevented leaks into my trunk will now be used to stop rattles (I hope).

View 14 RepliesI have a 2003 Honda Element with 124,000 miles and it runs like a gem. I purchased it at 99,000! It has slowly developed a dull thunking sound in the left rear (seems to be left rear). I hear this sound when traveling at lower speeds on bumpy surfaces. I don't hear the sound at highway speeds nor do I hear it when my brother (who is a mechanic) stand on the back bumper and jumps up and down really hard after removing everything from the inside of the car. We have had it up on the lift to look at everything underneath and there is nothing thunky when wiggled.
View 6 RepliesI've had this intermittent plastic rattle coming from the back end on bumpy roads at low speed. It's not the license plate and bracket (already fixed that one). Yesterday I happened to tap on the outside of my left tail light and heard it rattle with the same noise I'm hearing on the inside of the car. There is no rattle when I tap on the right tail light.
View 5 RepliesNoticed a plastic rattling noise near their back speaker housing while driving over bumpy roads? I started noticing this sound over the last week or so, and thus far can only isolate it to the rear speakers area.
I also tested the rear shade up and down to make sure that wasn't rattling against the roof, but it wasn't. I also took everything loose out of the car just to make sure it wasn't some random object. The annoying thing is.. the sound is NOT consistent-- even while driving over the SAME bumpy road AND everything I feel is very tight and solid. So bringing it back to the dealer is a bit premature I think since I can't duplicate the problem consistently yet.
Btw, I have the JBL Synthesis system -- 11 speakers.
When I go over bumps or rough surfaces I hear a rattle in the rear suspension. It sounds similar to the noise bad ball joints make. I recently had the car aligned and the shop said they couldn't find anything wrong. I'm going to take a look myself but was wondering if this might be a common problem. If maybe there are certain bushing that are known to wear out.

View 5 RepliesBeen hearing a plastic sounding tapping noise when I ride over very bumpy roads. Turns out the floor panel in the trunk has some play and it's not padded. Well I wedged a towel Between the floor and the trunk lid and the tapping is gone. I was able to duplicate the sound by lifting and dropping the sliding floor in the trunk. View 7 RepliesJust noticed a rattle above my head when temp drops below 60, only on certain rough, washboard surfaces. I am running 44/42 PSI, so I know what I am getting into. I have no intention to fix the rattle other than cranking up the radio. I know when cars age, they eventually develop more rattles. Question is, when left alone, do rattles do any long term harm? As in loosing something else and create a new rattle, or get worse.
View 2 RepliesI have an annoying rattle the occurs on rough road surfaces. It comes from the front right wheel area but goes away instantly with light brake pedal pressure. Three trips to the shop have not identified the problem. I just read somewhere that there are "anti-rattle clips" or springs on the brake calipers. Is this right and are these the same as the retaining springs/clips that can be seen from the outside through the slots in the alloys wheels?
View 5 RepliesI just got home from a 650 mile trip and I have pinpointed something I have been hearing for a while but couldn't figure it out. It's a very very faint rattle (something like the sound a hard drive makes) and it seemed to be coming from behind the dash. I experimented a little today and this is what I noticed.
It is actually coming from somewhere around the gas pedal and it only does it when you are neither accelerating or decelerating. In other words, when the engine is at equilibrium if that makes any sense. It's a tiny sound and I should just turn the radio on and forget it, but it's just one of those little things that bugs ya.
I have a 2009 Subaru Outback with 60K miles and this problem has been present since I purchased with 30K miles. When turning left or right over uneven surfaces (like washboard dirt road, potholes, or strips of Botts' dots in a parking garage) there is a loud, audible rattle coming from the front end. It sounds like to metal pipes hitting together. The noise does not happen when driving straight.
Subaru and another garage have inspected. Front struts and sway bar links have been replaced with no effect. CV joints, ball joints have all been inspected with no issues found.
I read on a forum that it may have something to do with the power steering fluid, that when turning there is uneven pressure on both sides and it results in the noise. Possible at the steering column universal joint.
I assume since it only happens to some Subarus that replacing the correct parts will resolve the issue.
My 2002 SC 430 has a rattle in the vicinity of the passenger side speaker. I have isolated it to this area because the rattle stops as soon as I turn off the sound system. How to remove the speaker grille and poke around? The grille itself does not seem to be loose.

View 10 RepliesI'm getting this rattling sound/buzzing sound when I drive over bumpy roads. I'm not sure if this is the fuel line since the only time I get the rattle is when I drive over bumpy roads (brick roads, uneven roads, rumble strip, etc).
I think the rattle is from the passenger side.
I checked the VW site for recalls (not sure if TSBs will show up) for my vehicle. I think I'm going to take it in to get checked and see if the fuel line rubber washer was ever installed. Would the dealership be able to see if the TSB was ever performed while they had the car in the lot? Does the TSB only apply to certain range of VINs?
Have noticed since I had my car that I have a mild sunroof rattle. If I push on the rear right corner of the sunroof glass I have feel a little bit of play. This play is causing rattling on bumpy roads. I had the same issue on my 07 GS350 because it was slammed ( rode pretty ruff like the ISF), but I cant remember what they did to fix the issue. I am assuming it needs some insulation or tightening. Pretty sure with the way the ISF rides and the number of members we have with lowered ISF that I am surely not the only member with this rattle.
View 14 RepliesI recently bought a Nissan Altima and noticed that the sunroof area rattles when I go over a bumpy patch of road or a manhole cover. The sound is definitely a rattle and not a squeaking sound. I can replicate the sound by smacking the roof from the inside of the car and it's contained mostly to right above where my head is near the bottom left corner of the sunroof.
When I got the car I removed the wind deflector that's attached to the roof because I really don't like how they look. I also removed the wind deflector arm since the plastic connector to it broke when I removed the deflector. I'm guessing the sun cooked the plastic parts and it just snapped. I doubt the rattle is due to the arm being removed but I added it in just in case. This weekend I removed part of the trim on the inside of the roof and blew compressed air to get debris out but the rattle is still there.
How to get this annoying problem to just go away?
I took the R in for a passenger side seat issue (recliner not working), and while I was there I had them look into a light knocking noise I was experiencing.
The noise would happen most noticeably at low speeds, over uneven road surfaces...but not over things like speed bumps. I checked under the car, checked the hatch, made sure the spare/tools were secure, and nothing worked.
VW figured out that the noise was coming from the lower rubber rear spring plate, part (1K0-512-297-D). Not sure if it was one side or both, but they replaced both.
All better now, no more noise! Just wanted to make a thread for those of you who like to hunt down and fix noises.
I have coilovers on my R32 with adjustable control arms and have been noticing a "thud" type of noise when going over uneven surfaces which appears to be coming from the rear.
I actually periodically noticed this noise when I first got the PSS's put on my car when going over larger bumps/dips in the road but lately it is becoming much more pronounced - occurring over uneven surfaces like parking ramps or driving over crappy roads. Over smooth surfaces, no problem.
Thought it was my rear sway bar bushings since they were making a really bad creaking noise, got those replaced and still noticing this damn noise.
