Lexus RX 2004-09 :: Vibration And Rattling Noise Comes From Exhaust System
May 3, 2016
My '05 Lexus RX330 has developed a vibration and rattling noise, that I believe comes from the exhaust system. Looking for info on trouble shooting or quick repair?

My 2008 Camry SE 2.4L rattles loudly when I accelerate. It happens all the time & I believe it's the braided portion of the exhaust system. It sounds like tin rattling.

Ok, probably about 1/3 times i start my 96 f150 4.9 with true duals, the left pipe has a higher pitched howling noise, its a steady tone whether I rev the truck up or not it just gets louder. It will do it for about 6 seconds and then stop. The truck doesn't run badly because of it, but i took her to autozone to get her scanned and they said that the oxygen sensor on the first manifold bank has a slow response on startup. Is that what causes this strange noise, I don't even know how it would make it, it sounds much different from the engine. The right pipe doesn't do anything.

Our 07 RX350 has 47,000 miles and I just starting to hear (I think from the front) a faint rattling noise while driving. It's hard to describe but it sort of sounds like what you might expect if an empty plastic bottle was slowly bumping around in a plastic box. It is not a metal on metal type of noise. The shocks/struts appears to pass the old bounce test and the car does not seem to display any of the handling issues you get when you have worn shocks/struts.
I also checked the upper engine compartment to see if any plastic shrouds or covers were loose - they weren't.

I have a 2007 RX350 with about 243,000kms on it. I recently purchased this car and everything is great on it except one thing. As of late, I've begun to take notice that when I accelerate from a stand still (for example after stopping at a light/stop sign), a loud rattling/grinding starts and then as I pick up speed and change gears, it fades away. The sound is more rattling than grinding. As if there is a metal bowl with some smalls stones in it and someone is just shaking that. There is also another sub issue that I'm having. There seems to be a clicking noise every time I apply the brakes or even accelerate. The same clicking noise reoccurs every time I put the gear into drive from neutral. However, when I do that, there is only click as opposed to braking/accelerating, where there are many. I'm hoping this is all part of the same issue and not isolated issues.

My truck is making a metal on metal rattling noise when going over undulations or the type of vibration when you drive over a rumble strip.
It seems to be coming from underneath the engine area, but not quite sure. The sound is like a kettle lid clanking on the actual kettle when the water's boiling if you can hear what I mean. No noise when just driving.

I'm the proud owner of a 2008 RX350 with low mileage (40,000 miles - US model). I purchased it a year ago and I haven't had any mechanical problems. However it's been 3 months that I have this rattle from the rear, especially when driving over uneven pavement.
I had the vehicle checked by a local mechanic but he couldn't find any loose part at the exception of the spare tire plastic cover underneath that looked a bit flimsy but he couldn't tell for sure... I even did an oil change at a Lexus dealership and they didn't find anything when they hoisted the car but they didn't look hard either....
I've disconnected the tonneau cover and put the release latches, for the tonneau, in the lock position (towards the front of the vehicle). That didn't solve the problem. Lastly I removed my plate cover and still didn't resolve it.
Anyway, the rattle seems to come from somewhere underneath, around the trunk area and is loud when you hit bump or drive on uneven road and it's driving me crazy!

I have an 04 rx 330 with air suspension. The swaybar end links have just been replaced on the front and a rattling noise persists.
The noise happens over large and small bumps at high and low speeds at normal and low vehicle height. When the height is at "HI" the noise is louder and it feels as though the front end is shaking loose over bumps at 10 km/h+.
I took it in and was advised to replace the end links, they did so and returned it claiming the noise was gone. The air compressor and struts are in working condition.
I have done a search through the forum, not extensive... I was wondering which other components come loose/wear and cause a clunk/rattle/shudder noise.
Also, tires are new and at approx. 32-34 psi.

I recently got the timing belt along with water pump replaced. While they were in there, they changed the spark plugs and intake gaskets. I also had a leak in the radiator so that needed to be replaced. The car has 97K and is a 2008 400h. Local ex-BMW mechanic shop did the work. I supplied all the parts, and he only charged me for labor.
Car runs super smooth now with the replaced plugs and we have been euphoric with the maintenance to date until very recently.
So 1500 or so miles since this major service. My wife and I have been noticing that under load typically on an incline/hill there is some noise coming from the engine. I heard it again the other day and were only noticeable at low speeds between 10-35 MPH and low RPM. (I couldn't tell you exactly the RPM's as its not provided in the instrument cluster.) It seems like the engine is struggling a bit and is rattling at the top near the back of the engine bay/ fire wall area. Maybe its the intake manifold housing? Its hard to reproduce too. Once I give it some gas it goes away. It only seems to happen once on every trip and only on hills/grades at low speed.
Going from being an even quieter and smoother running vehicle after the service to this is making me a little concerned.

For the past month or so, my RX has been making this weird vibration and noise from the under body near the engine (maybe transfer case?) It is usually when it's cold and at low speed. But sometimes it does it even when the engine's warmed up for couple minutes.
I did change the transfer case fluid and rear differential about 3 months ago. Not sure if this is related.

I have come across reading about all the issues 2006 AWD models have, and one in particular is the exhaust system. It lacks a proper replacement. After reading about people's exhaust system leaking having rust through out, I decided to take a look at mine. It is full of rust.

In 2010 i purchased a 2005 Lexus GX470 w/ 52k miles. It had 2 previous owners and you could tell it had been garage keep and most likely not their weekday car because low miles and 3rd row was in mint condition. Up until late last year the car has been great. I use it to tow my boat and the only thing besides regular oil/filters and its 60k checkup was to replace the drive shaft for the TSB/clunk noise on stopping.
I am currently having two issues that have been becoming worse.
1st is the knocking or tapping noise in the engine compartment. Below is a link to the video. This was after driving for approx 15 minutes. It doesn't do it 10/10 times, but is probably happening 1/2 the time now when i drive it. Oil is 10W30 Full Synthetic by MobileOne and just replaced today to see if that changed anything. I purchased 2 replacement knock sensors a few weeks back but haven't had the time to break it down to swap them out. Figured since the belt needs to be done at 90k and my car is 10yrs old I might as well replace the timing belts at the same time. When the AC is on or car is in drive it doesn't knock strangely enough. In the video you can hear the AC click on/off and knock when its off. I'm hoping this isn't a bad engine or rod or something... Thoughts?
2nd is the steering vibration. I noticed there is a TSB on that for replacing the steering column and other parts and assume I should do thing soon as well. Depending on the payment or temperature it will do this at times around 60ish MPH. Again, its not consistent, but is very noticeably while driving when it is. Tires have approx 40% tread remaining and only the driver side tire seems slightly more worn on the inside than the outside.

Trying to load the CD ... I put in 6 discs I've tried them label up, label down, Compact Disc Digital Audio, and regular CD-RI hear the changer making noise when installed. The system won't play the CDs. It just says "No CD" At one point it put up a "Bluetooth connectivity problem" message. The rest of nav sys seems to work. 2005 Nav Sys Factory Changer. I've never used it and just got the car.

I have a 2004 GX470; bought it new. The last few months I have been hearing a strange noise from the driver's side; seems to be coming from under the floorboard and can sometimes feel a vibration in the brake pedal. The noise is similar to a cat meowing. Have a son who is a GM tech; he said it sounds more electrical than mechanical. It happens mostly when I drive it cold. Seems to also happen more when turning/braking. I had the main belt replaced this summer. Should I have the tension pully replaced?

My wife's 04 GX deflates sometimes when we park it, you can clearly hear a loud "whooshing" noise occasionally when we park it in our garage. The rear then goes to the lowest possible setting, it looks odd laying that low. Because it's not my car, I don't know if it always did that, but it seems "new" to me.
The deflation sound is coming from the rear mounted compressor on the rear driver side, I went under the car to investigate. It also appears that the air bags themselves aren't leaking, I raised the car to the highest setting, and it stayed there without the compressor kicking on or any leaking noise.
My guess is maybe the sensors need to be replaced, the thing is, I don't want to "shotgun" parts at a problem and spend $500 or so dollars on new sensors to experiment. How do I know the rear is behaving correctly?

So I picked up my Accent on Tuesday with only 8kms on it and I love it! However I have one problem, I was driving around today and kept on hearing a rattling noise coming from the front right passenger side. I tried to lower/raise the window but I think it may be around the speaker.

Any turbulence in the exhaust note, ie. slapping noise at full throttle. I have run 3 different mufflers in one year on my true dual and also gutted the cats. I currently have 2 1/2inch true dual with gutted cats and cherry bomb extreme mufflers. I Also am running an H-pipe, but I feel it isn't doing its job so well to balance the two sides. My trucks exhaust is almost perfect, it starts mean and loud, and has limited drone at highway speeds and great flow and power, but when I am smashing down the throttle the exhaust goes everywhere and makes all sorts of weird noise.
I almost feel that I should of went 3 inch to allow for me air to get out of the motor, I think the 2.5inch is restrictive possibly hence the air is having a tough time squeezing out of the system. But anyway do you think if i ran an X pipe it would work? Its my last option because otherwise i may convert back to the a single 3 inch dual 2.5inch outlet again, i miss my old set ups mean consistent tone at full throttle.

Recently had an aftermarket turbo back exhaust system installed. After driving for a short while, I noticed that between 2500 and 3500 RPMs the noise was very loud. Once I hit the highway (in which the engine almost exclusively hangs around those numbers), it was almost unbearable to sit in the car while having that constant droning sound. I have had and been in cars with aftermarket exhaust systems before and never heard anything quite like this. It is pretty tame below 2500 and once you hit 4000, it sounds quite nice and that horrible drone goes away. I really trust the shop that did the work, so I doubt it was faulty install. Could it be a faulty design or maybe just the one that I received?
This exhaust is from a reputable maker and they designed this system specifically for the Golf R. I did have some other mods done at the same time (Coilovers, Engine Mount Insert, Intake and a Tune). I know the insert may cause a little bit of vibration and hence a little bit of extra noise, but nothing like this. While driving on the highway at 3000 RPMs, I cannot even clearly see the cars behind me through the rear windshield as there is so much vibration from all the noise.
Forgot to mention, this TBE is resonated with a CAT, so even more reason for concern. Would expect it to be quiet by comparison to a CAT-less non-resonated system
