Like the title says, I sometimes experience a long shift from 1st to 2nd. When the transmission is cold, it seems to shift fine from 1st to 2nd. It isn't until it is warmed up that I get a looong shift. It winds up,,,,, then it shifts. I have no problems in other gears.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2004 Toyota Camry, automatic trans, 172k miles, still in great shape and has been well cared for with standard preventative maintenance. When it's cold (<30F), the transmission will not shift out of 2nd or 3rd gear, can't tell which. It reaches about 40mph before the RPMs approach 3000, and I dare not push it harder. Let the car warm up or drive it for 5 minutes and everything is fine. This has happened the last two winters. The car runs great other than this, which means there is no apparent problem 8 months of the year. I had the transmission fluid flushed and filter changed last year thinking it may improve, but there was no change. What could be the culprit?
View 17 RepliesMy camry has been great up until the last week. The weather has gotten extremely cold here and when I start driving in the morning or from any cold starts the transmission doesn't shift out of second gear. After I drive it a mile or so and slow almost to a stop it will shift normally until I park it.
It has 125000 miles on it and I hope this isn't a serious problem because it is a great car and has been well taken care of. Looks brand new on the inside and out and I've never had any problems until now.
04' Ford Explorer - 4.6l Automatic 4x4 - 138,000 miles... While driving today my transmission hesitated a long time between 2-3 gear and RPM went higher than normal. After coming to a stop a taking off again, long hesitation, slams into 3rd gear, check transmission warning came on and OD light on dash was blinking. I drive it home and pull the code: P0745. I drop the pan and find a piece of metal 1/4 wide x 1/2 long. Does this mean a complete trans rebuild?

My VSC light comes on (i know it comes on with any DTC)
My traction control light is on
My engine light is on
Now, when driving, it doesnt shift out of first gear till about 4K rpm and thats at normal acceleration (not flooring it) and shifts out of range on all other gears.
I can hear a humming/winding noise coming from the left side of the car (tray side) and it does it and I can hear it very clearly when letting off the accelerator (more noticeable at high speeds)
I have a 2000 F150 5.4L with 157k miles on it. I think it has the 4r70w trans. The transmission has started holding 2nd gear too long before shifting into third. Throttle position doesn't matter, it does it even under light throttle. I do not have a check engine light. I have owned the truck since new and the trans fluid has been changed 3 or 4 times. The fluid looks pretty good now, not burnt or anything. The truck has been sitting in the garage a lot over the past 2 years, I drive it at least once a month and have put maybe 2000 miles on it this year. It shifts fine through the other gears, just 2-3 has an issue. Truck has the towing package.
View 6 RepliesRX 350 (mine is 2013) produce a slight bump in revs as you decelerate moderately going from 2nd gear to 1st? It goes away after the tranny is warmed up. Wondering if it's just a result of the cold weather.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2004 Hyundai Accent, has 167k miles on it. Transmission has 80k, put in at about 155k. Came home from Tahoe, and the next day, I tried to go to work, and the gear shift was stuck in first. Hadn't had the money to get anything fixed, but when I finally got it looked at, was told I needed a new clutch and possibly a new flywheel. Been cleaning it out to sell, and today I started it up and realized that the stick is in neutral and moves back and forth freely, but the transmission is in gear. I know that, because I had to keep my foot on the clutch to keep it running. What would cause that? I'm hoping it's something easy and cheaper to fix, because I love this car and am not ready to part with it just yet. The clutch doesn't have that many miles on it either, maybe 10-15k, if that. I've had the car for almost ten years, so it's not poor driving, on my part.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 RX with 82,000 miles, well maintained. Lately the engine will start but the warning lights won't go off and the gear shift won't move out of park. I have to keep turning the vehicle on and off until the gear shift will go in reverse.
It doesn't happen every day but off and on over the past month.I've had numerous brake light switches replaced which could maybe be the lights, would that affect the transmission too?
I had the cam gears on my 2009 RX350 replaced and after the replacement I noticed that the engine noise is louder. It's louder after a cold start and idle. And it's louder when driving. Even the transmission sounds like it's struggling - it's taking much longer to shift into higher gear and occasionally it makes a whining sound when it shifts. Also, I'm hearing whining sounds when I steer the wheel (which was diagnosed as potentially caused by a faulty power steering pump, which by the way did not cause any noise prior to the work done). The replacement was done by a reputable Lexus dealer.
The Lexus dealership claims that the engine noise level is within acceptable limits even though it is much louder than before the cam gears were replaced. They deny that the replacement cam gears could be defective or that the replacement itself could have gone wrong. They have acknowledged the noise coming from the transmission and have offered to replace it (still under warranty so no cost to me). Now what is strange to me about all this is that prior to having the cam gears replaced, the engine noise was very quiet. The only occasional noise came from the cam gears on cold starts but lasted a second or two.
Now I don't know for sure that replacing the transmission will fix the noise issue. And it is so strange that the transmission seemed fine prior to the work done. What's happening here given the facts? Could replacing the cam gears somehow damage the transmission? Is there any interaction between cam gears and transmission. Aside from the transmission, what could explain the much higher engine noise (when not shifting so transmission not a factor) after the cam gears were replaced?
2006 GX470 57000 miles loaded. I purchased this new and I was wondering if anyone on here can give me a bit of input on what you may think is going on.
My truck when merging onto a high speed roadway my truck doesn't seem to want to shift into the next gear. Almost like if it was a manual I would have to shift it. It really whines out before it shifts.
Also My husband is hearing a humming/vibration from the rear when we are doing about 65 steady I've already had my tires removed and checked to see if I may have thrown a weight or a broken belt but everything is good. I have Michelins on the truck and they are about 2 yrs old. No damage on the tires I have them rotated every 5000 miles.
I had the truck in for service and told them about this. The Lexus service rep told me his mechanic told him he found nothing. I asked them to check again and he said the mechanic would take it home to drive it at a speed that was needed. Again I was told nothing was found. Got the truck back from the seat repair don't even think the truck was taken home.
Replaced Troque Converter, Truck runs engine runs fine transmission won't shift out of 1st gear.
View 2 RepliesSeems lately when driving up a long incline the Trans seems to slip back to third gear from overdrive. I watched the tach and it jumps up like it's went to another gear. But goes right back into overdrive. It will keep doing this as long as we're under load, like going up an incline. If I put it manually into 3rd and keep it there it won't do it.
We went on a long trip last summer and it kept doing it and it threw a tourque converter code. I can't remember which one tho. I did a drain and fill and it made it better but it's doing it again. We have 167,500 miles on it. I was told by Hyundai that it would be around $2800 for a rebuilt tranny. If I was to need one. Don't think the TPS would cause the shudder right? Seeing it doesn't do it when I keep it out of overdrive.
A month ago I had the Lexus dealer do a 50k mile service (although I have 68k). I work from home and rarely go anywhere. The miles are highway miles to North Carolina Mtns. I have a 2007 GX470 that I bought new. Tried going out last night to dinner and the car would not go into gear. The shifter would move freely but would not engage. When I tried putting it back into Park, there was a grinding noise, not bad but it was there. The car is UN-drivable. Before I have it towed to Lexus, is there anything simple I could check? The car drove perfectly the day before.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2008 Ford Escape 2.3L V6. About 67K miles on it.
Recently there's been some transmission problems. When the selector is in Drive, it will take abnormally long to shift into the next gear at normal speeds, and will redline if i hit it hard, but if i let off the gas, it will shift. Never hard.
If I put the selector in 2, it will do the same thing, eventually shifting into that second gear.
Gear selector on one, well, it obviously stays in 1st.
Reverse is fine. All shifts are smooth just take forever, and I get the wrench in the dash (means drivetrain/throttle fault as per manual) only after driving a while. The tranny fluid is still very clean, and this as been going on for 2 months.
Ive taken it to about 6 different places. Half say new tranny off the bat. Other half says clean fluid for that long after the problem started means its def. an electrical problem, and that makes the most sense to me. What it could be?
I'm thinking:
-Tranny Range Positioning Sensor
-Input/Output speed sensor
-TCM reprogramming/replace
- I'll even go with reflashing the PCM.
I have a 2004 RX 330 and the transmission kicked out of 3rd gear going around a turn. It felt like something gave way and broke. Now the transmission only works when the selector is in 1 or 2. It will not shift above 2nd gear reverse works fine. I have not experienced any transmission issues with this vehicle till now. The car has 215k miles so its higher mileage. The transmission doesn't make any strange noises while running in this limp mode. There was no check engine code flashed when the incident happened. I read a couple of message threads and saw some mention of limp home mode from the knock sensor. I think that this should have generated a dash code at least. I tried resetting the any codes that were generated with disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes. This made the problem worse and the car will barely idle now. The resetting of the codes did not fix the shift issue.
View 5 RepliesI just bought my 2007 GX470 last Friday. Last night I drove it home in the season's first snowstorm. I've got plenty of experience with winter driving and Toyotas, so I thought I knew what to expect.
I dropped down to 3rd gear for a long hill and the transmission or engine started surging. It would hold at 1100 rpm, then suddenly jump to 1400rpm when my foot was not even on the gas. Then it would drop back to 1100 again.
The car has 78000 miles on it.
I have a Ranger that I have put a 302 engine with an FMX transmission in...everything seems to be working correct except the transmission will not shift in to 3rd gear... don't know alot about transmission.. could this be a linkage adjustment issue?
View 6 RepliesI have 142k miles on my 2005 RX330 AWD. This week I can feel the transmission slip/shudder when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.
My local transmission guy is pretty reasonable but like most salesmen he's going to say rebuild it the entire transmission in lou of something less invasive.
My car is 7k short of its drive train warranty expiring. I noticed a rumbling vibration when the transmission shifted between 3-4 gear at approximately 20-25 mph. Took it into the dealer, and their expert rode with me and verified that it indeed was vibrating, but that he had never seen this issue on the 2007 GS350 AWD. He said he would have to check around the country to see if others had this problem. Four days later, he advised me that he was told to flush the transmission 2-3 times and for me to drive it about 1k miles to see if that fixed it. Well, it doesn't do it anymore, but I'm not sure why, or that it won't do it again just after the warranty expires at 70k miles. I certainly don't want to look at a 4-6,000.00 transmission replacement after the warranty expires. The dealer obviously doesn't want to incur the expense either, under warranty. Even though the transmission does not rumble or vibrate anymore, should I ask for the replacement anyway?
