Lexus LS 2007+ :: Transmission Shifts Slowly When Cold
Nov 12, 2012
For the first mile or so on cold mornings, by transmission shifts slowly - sort of a second or two delay until the car warms up. Is this normal?

View 3 Replies2007 GS 350 AWD in power mode, 22,000 actual miles on the car.
Pavement - dry
When going slowly over a neighborhood speed bump after about 2 minutes of low speed engine operation (engine still cold), the transmission seems to disengage, spinning in neutral for about one second, then it engages.
This doesn't happen when the engine is warm. Is this normal? Is it a problem?
Sometimes mine shifts nice and quick, but sometimes it also shifts soft and slowly with a slight "flare" between shifts. Seems like it shifts better the harder I drive it, but I try not to drive like that. Dealer says everything seems normal to them. Maybe it's the adaptive transmission?
View 32 RepliesI bought a 2010 GLS 4cyl and within the first week started having shifting issues. Initially it was only when it was colder than 30 degrees outside and would only shift harshly between 1st and 2nd. Once I had driven a few miles and warmed the car up, everything was OK. It's still an intermittent issue, but now it will do it when outside morning temps are in the 50's and 60's.
I've read the TSB for 6cyl 09's and saw a post in the Santa Fe forum that sounded identical, so at least I'm not the first to experience this.
I took it back to the dealership knowing it probably would not shift badly when they test drove it because we had run out of cold mornings. I picked the car up after they reset adaptive learning and said there were no updates available for the computer. (And also being told I had bad gas in the car. Another story for another time...)
Until it starts doing it at fairly regular intervals, there isn't any use taking back to the dealership as it's very inconvenient for me to get there.
I checked the link that had TSB's and didn't see anything for the 2010's. Also, is there any place where I could check and see when software updates come out and what issues are addressed?
I recently bought 2007 ES 350 drove @700+ miles, 2 times I had this incident in this week, the latest is today. In cold morning when I try to drive the vehicle when it is cold when I pull the lever to drive mode the accelerator increases the RPM but the car is not rolling or I should say very very snail pace, so I tried pushing the lever back to park, then reverse drive the vehicle and then engage to drive mode it works fine but I hear lot of fan sound. For initial few min I feel that it is not picking up much speed but then it becomes normal. It really tensed me. What action can be taken to resolve this?
As per the Autocheck report this was manufactured in Jun 2006 and the vehicle service records from Lexus web there is no sign of any transmission problem or fix to transmission. The car has 100K+ miles on it.
I Have A 2001 F 150 And I Have Just Noticed That On Cold Morning When The Temperature Is Below 35 That My Transmission Takes A While To Shift Into High. Sometime I Am Two To Three Miles Down The Road Before It Will Shift Into The Last High Gear. Is This Normal Or Should I Have This Checked Out? I Have 53,000 Miles On This Truck And Do I Need To Have The Fluil Changed An Serviced.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2008 GC 6 speed transmission that has 55000 miles on it. When the engine and tranny is cold the transmission shifts very hard until it warms up. There are times when shifting from reverse to drive it shifts very hard. Also, the siding doors creak when driving over rough roads. Can they be adjusted?
View 2 RepliesWe have a 2010 Santa Fe AWD LTD with about 140, 000km on it. It recently came back from front suspension work. The suspension is fine now, but we notice harder shifts in the transmission. Also, there seems to be a vibration just before shifting gears and when under load (like going up hill) seems to slip (like on ice) about once every second until the shift is made. Once the shift is made it drive smoothly until put under pressure again. Even stepping down a bit on the accelerator will cause this slipping feeling (or maybe its loss of power).
View 4 RepliesI have a 2013 ES350 with 3,000 miles on her. Heard a whine coming from the trany as it shifts? To me, it sounds like a power steering pump whine, but not as loud.
View 14 RepliesLately, I've been having an issue with my 03 GX. It seems when the engine is cold and I back out of my driveway, when I put the truck into D, I feel the usual bump into drive, then it falls off and then a harder bump before I'm able to roll forward. If I don't pay attention and accelerate at the time the transmission seems to drop out of gear momentarily, the truck slams into gear and feels like I granny dropped it.
The truck is coming up on 120K. I've checked the transmission fluid and it is at the correct level.
My 2009 Santa-Fe AWD Limited is sick! Starting from a stop, the vehicle has abrupt shifts with the transmission slipping (RPM revving). Seems worse when cold. Checked the fluids, and found ATF fluid in the engine oil and engine oil in the ATF fluid. Quick internet check suggest a leaky vacuum modulator valve. (There is no way the fluids went in the wrong holes, the vehicle only has 69k kilometers on it, so it still has original ATF fluid, and I recently changed the engine oil myself.) So, do you think this is the correct diagnosis? How hard is it to change the modulator, and where is it located?
View 3 Replies2007 escape 4wd 3.0. I've notice some random hard shifts for the past month and today the trans has trouble shifting out of 1st. If I get the rpms between 3,000-4,000 and ease off the accelerator pedal it shifts into 2nd without drama. It will not shift at lower rpms with the same easing off the pedal. The trans light is steadily blinking.
View 7 RepliesSo I noticed that my transmission shifts (jerks) a little rougher than the 3 previous Lexi's that I had when shifting into drive or reverse when the car isnt fully warmed up. Is that "normal?" Had 2 ESes and 1 RX and while I do feel a slight lurch, the GS is a bit rough. I usually let the RPM drop to 1k before driving off on warm or cold days.
Separate incident: I recall at one point, I was going reverse, stopped, quickly shifted into drive and gave it some pedal (not full throttle) and felt a noticeable "bang" and violent lurch forward. Could that have hurt the transmission? Is the computer smart enough to prevent damage? I'm thinking this might have been the cause of it.
I would like to replace the transmission fluid in my 2006 SC and do the mod to make shifting firm. I have read a few threads that post pictures of the pressure regulator dial in pre 06 to firm up shifting. One such thread is this. However, I have not come up with any for 06+ transmission.
View 9 Replies2006 Passat, 6 speed manual,113,000 kms. Driving to work this morning and I noticed every few shifts that the clutch pedal rebounded slowly when released. Then in traffic stuck to the floor and I had to physically pry it back with the side of my foot. Worked fine for a few more shifts then same thing again.
View 4 RepliesI noticed the RPM's are higher than they used to be when accelerating slowly.
My car is an awd hybrid 600h with a CVT (110.000 miles) .. Do i have to check the transmission fluid? How?
Is my clutch or whatever it's called dying?
My car is still under warranty, but I'm not sure if wearable parts are included.
ES350 Transmission - I have the following issue that has happened to me twice now.
When it's cold outside (around -10C or below), I start the car and let it run for about 1 minute. I pull out of the parking lot and drive down the street for a very short distance and stop at the intersection and wait to turn left. This only happens when I wait for a minute or more. I go to turn left and the car feels like it has no power and stays in 1st gear all the way up to 4000 rpm and then shifts. After this the car is totally fine and it shifts at the normal 1500 rpm or so going about 15km/hr. When I'm sitting at the intersection waiting to turn, the car is idling at about 1200 rpm or so while the car is warming up.
I've tried many times to recreate the issue but I couldn't do it because I never let the car sit and idle. If it's constantly moving with stop and go it's fine.
I called the Lexus dealer to ask about this and they told me the first thing to do is change the transmission fluid because it could be low or dirty. The car is 6 1/2 years old (July 2006) with 58,000km on it. They said the transmission fluid should be changed at the 6 year interval. They also asked me if I had the car in the shift manual mode (which I didn't) because it seemed to exhibit this behaviour.
Shifts slowly or stays in shifting mode longer than necessary. Must stop accelerating and wait a few seconds until the shifting is complete. Does something need adjusting?
View 6 RepliesMy 2011 ES350 has 49k miles on it (just got it last week).
I just noticed that when moving slowly (with and without accelerating) I can hear a slight whistle sound that resembles a bird chirp coming from what I think is a wheel.
My dad can't hear the sound (I'm thinking the frequency is too high for his ears) but it is definitely there and I can hear it clearly.
The sound comes and goes but something is not right. Wonder what it is?
I have an 07 LS460 with 65k miles.
Within last couple days I noticed a clicking sound when reversing and accelerating forward slowly.
This occurs most of the time when accelerating while wheel is turning (like after you back out of driveway and slowly turn straight to pull away)
I've also noticed the click when pulling into garage and braking.
While I am driving, when I hit 25-45 MPH, the wheel suddenly rotates clockwise ~20 degrees while the path of the car stays pretty straight. There is some play at lower speeds too, but the the 25-45 MPH shift is the most dramatic. I have a video here where I am applying minimal grip to the wheel, so the rotations you see (especially ~9 seconds in) are not me. The sound is an item on my passenger seat, so that is unrelated.
I checked out the suspension and the front left control arm has some give at the bushing/joint, but that strikes me as a side issue. Everything else feels sturdy in the suspension. Anything else I can do to diagnose? I suspect this has something to do with the power steering which I have never dealt with before. 1999 ES300....
