Lexus LS 2007+ :: Musty Smell In Cabin When Run Fresh Air Setting
Nov 1, 2014
I bought a used a 2008 LS600hL and noticed that when I run the fresh air setting with the AC off (like in winter) I get a musty smell in the cabin. I had Stevens Creek Lexus (Santa Clara Ca.) check it out and they tried to put a fragrance on it but that wore off after a few days. I have no problems with the water drainage (they checked) but wonder if I need to pull the AC coils and replace or something like that.

How do you fix the musty smell from the cabin airbox when it is always on recirculate and must be wet inside? I have a 2011 Camry.

Yesterday afternoon, after a 90 minutes stop and go commute, a strong gas smell developed in the cabin of my 2009 LS460. The factory call-back service was performed on the car few months ago.
During yesterday's long commute, the LS460 passenger side wheels run over some garbage on the high way at high speed, and after that I can hear some noise from passenger side, sounds like a flag's flopping sound.
Other than that, recent incidents that I can think of that might be related are:
1. All 8 control arms of front wheels replaced about 3 weeks ago
2. Have been using Sam's Club premium 93 gas for the past 4 weeks

Every time I get in and start up my GX it omits a moldy / musty smell out of the vents, it stinks! It goes away in a matter of seconds but it seems at every start up I get that smell again, it's kind of embarrassing.

Getting a sour, moldy, or musty smell when the car starts and the air is pushed out the front vents. I know its getting hot and humid here in midwest but kind of started before and smell got gradually worst with humidity. It goes away in like 15 seconds but its a pain to have a new/used care and it smell like a 16 year boy when you start up. Though the AC filter might be moldy or has some funk on it.

How do you avoid air (fresh??) thru closed vents? I switched the a/c off and cold air was coming in thru the closed vents. Then I turned the fan on, the vents open and I put it in Economy with the air coming from the upper panel (windshield), then shut off the fan and the vents closed. But cold air was still coming by the "closed" vents. How do you avoid that?

I constantly have to keep my eye on the dash because like the title says, the vents will go from fresh air (where I always keep it) to recycled air and then the car gets warm inside...

I know this has been covered many times before but I know how to remedy the problem. My question is that I have an 09 which is still under warranty, is replacing the cabin filter/charcoal filter due to bacterial odor covered under my bumper to bumper warranty? I found some posts where people said it was but I want to double check before i waste time that I don't have with the dealer since I've been really busy with school.

I have a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with 83k on it. For some months now, I have always been smelling strong fuel scent in the cabin. I took it to the workshop and was told it's my fuel canister so i handed money to the Mechanic to buy one to replace it. He called back to tell me he cannot get one to but can work on it by blocking the pipes or lines. I am not that convinced because i know the canister is there for a purpose so if he goes ahead to block the pipe or whatever, then it means something else can go wrong in the interim; but I'm in a quandary now and want that fuel scent to stop.

Car: 2007 2.4L Hyundai Sonata 76k miles
Problem: All of a sudden my car has developed an intermittent smoky smell in the cabin (I'm NOT a smoker). There are no check engine lights on and the car is running fine. The smell is not the classic "hot engine block" smell of the car overheating (which it is not according to the gauge). The smell I am getting is a hot smoky smell, doesn't smell like rubber either. No visible smoke in the cabin or the engine compartment.
Smell usually shows up after driving the car for around 2 minutes, but can vary and sometime not show up at all. The only thing that I can comment is a chirping sound from the pulleys that seems to be associated with humidity (power steering, radiator, etc) and the A/C blower intermittently not working (have not had any issues in past 3 months). How I can diagnose this?

I have a 2002 (built nov 2001) Excel 16 valve. Has developed a really bad sulfurous smell while driving. Smell enters through aircon when set on fresh air, minimizes (of course) when on recirculate. Immediately thought catalytic converter but I have had this checked and it appears OK, the mechanic used a camera to probe. Manifold / cat seems to be hotter than I remember, crackles and pops after stopping.

I have a 2007 Santa Fe. If I fill the tank to full, or close to full I will have a fuel smell in the car until the tank runs under 3/4. If I keep it under 3/4 I usally do not get the smell in the car.
The dealer could not figure it out and I still have this issue. It seems the smell is more in the front of the cabin then the rear. It just could seem that way since the smell is very strong. I have to park the car with the windows open.
There are no fuel leaks, no fuel on the ground, no drips, and the no spillage when I filled the tank.

When starting the RX, I smell something I would describe as "burning insulation". It happens only first 10-20 seconds after the air comes out from the vents, and then the smell disappears. The smell is stronger after prolonged parking. It is the strongest in the morning and less noticeable after I start the RX 2-3 more times ( I usually make 6-8 short trips during the day). The smell was very strong when I started the RX first time after it was parked for one week (while we went on vacation).
There are no warning lights, and the vehicle runs just fine. I pulled out the carbon cabin filter (changed about 3 mo ago) - it did not smell and was very clean still. I am hesitant to go to the dealer-afraid they will rip apart the dash, which they probably will not be able to put back together without having rattles and noises after.
The smell comes from the inside - there is no smell under the hood after I start the RX.

I have a 2014 RX 350. I have noticed an intermittent issue with exhaust smells coming into the cabin when the car is on recirculate and I am at highway speed. It happens when I am first accelerating after I've entered the freeway. If I get the odor, I can make it go away by briefly hitting the recirc/fresh button to bring in fresh air for a few moments. This doesn't happen driving around town.

I did read the most recent thread on this, and while those lessons would be good if I was out of warranty, I'm about to go in for the 5k service after 2 months on the road.

Recently noticed after a hard rain, I get a bit of a musty smell in the car. It clears up after a day or so.
I've check everywhere. Everything is dry. I can't find standing water anywhere.
Any problems with standing water?

My 2003 Passat has a musty smell coming from the HVAC system that just won't go away. Have resealed pollen filter and had airsept treatment (this worked for a while, but now the smell is worse than ever). Two dealers have tried (and failed) to fix this. It's so bad I can't take passengers in the car.

So, at 14k it looks like I have that musty smell coming out of the AC vents. I've seen a TSB on here that addresses it. Hopefully my first trip to the dealership for anything other than an oil change doesn't present me with any other surprises.

My bride reports a musty smell, possibly coming from the A/C vents, in her new v5. I've been away from home for six weeks and have not driven the car since we brought it home from the dealer on Sept 2. In years past we had a series of Ford Tauruses that had this problem. Apparently moisture from condensation builds up somewhere in the system and mold/mildew results. We used to have to spray Lysol into the HVAC air intake to alleviate the problem for a while.

I few weeks ago noticed musty smell out of my air vents but didn't mind it thinking it something temporary. Mind you that this only occurs when i have just the fan running without the AC or recycle feature. I opened up the filter and cleaned it out of debris. Looking at the filter it seem like it got wet because of color change that occurs on it, brownish(muddy). I bought the car pre-owned almost 10 months ago, had one service done but unfortunately Hyundai dealer scheduled the service hour before closing down and i think they didn't mind checking the filter, let alone checking tire/brake tread and no car wash.
