Oct 2, 2013
My 06 with 99k miles just developed a whine from engine maybe trans? It whines with the rpms in neutral also.

View 14 RepliesSo about 3 or so weeks ago I brought my 2006 GX470 into the Lexus stealership and had the pulley's, water pump, and timing belt replaced. Fast forward to this morning, about 300 miles driven and it suddenly when started today has a terrible whining sound and the battery light is on the dash.
I need to go over the invoice from what they did but I believe it was 4 different pulley's they wanted to replace. Not sure if it was anything on the accessory belt path, but I imagine if I call they will blame the alternator and tell me to shell out hundreds more?
I didn't run it long like that, only a minute or so. Popped the hood and I could smell the burning rubber smell so I quickly shut it off. Nothing *appeared* seized to me however.
I've got 2013 es 350 with 10,000 miles on now. I have recently noticed that there was whining/whirring noise coming from the engine(I guess) while accelerating up to 45 mph. It seems that the noise goes along with the RPM since it gets louder when accelerating. It makes same noise when decelerating from 30 mph and it goes away when the car stops. A friend of mine drove the car once before but did not hear anything until I told him about the noise, so I guess it is not very noticeable to some people. At the 10,000 miles check up at the dealer, I mentioned about it and they said they did not hear anything, but I know for sure there is whirring/whining noise.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2006 lexus es 330 that just turned over 90,000 miles. My dad and I have done the regular maintenance on it so far but this weekend after a 3 hour drive, I turned the car back on and a loud whirring/humming/whining noise was coming from the engine. It gets slightly louder with acceleration, but I can barely hear it once I've picked up speed (but it's still there.) It still happens when I am in neutral. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine. Close to the power steering pump area, but the power steering fluid is full (although it is a very dark/black color and has a slight smell...not sure if this is normal.) I'm not having any trouble or hesitation while steering. The rack is operating smoothly and it is not leaking. I plan on taking it into the shop but wanted to go in educated.
View 3 Replies2007 GX470 - Just noticed a distinct whining/humming sound similar to tire hum you would have with aggressive off-road tread tires. Seems to come alive around 20mph (or at least that's when I can hear it) and gets louder with the increase in speed. As I slow the sound goes away. Only does it while moving and not in neutral with engine rev.
We bought the car at 59k and it just hit 70k . Only oil changes, tire rotation have been done since we bought it. The tires were new when purchased so they have about 10k on them. No noise when we first got the car so I tend to think it's not related to the tread.
I was planning to do the front/read diff and transfer case drain/fill. Wondering if that may be the cause.
Something else - at low speed in tight turn (i.e. backing out of garage, pulling into parking spots) I do feel some roughness - almost like the differential is locked. Not sure if that is an indication. Was thinking it may be a wheel bearing but there is no clunking when turning.
Developed a whining type noise in my '07 prius engine compartment. Noise only there when gas pedal pressed. If I let off on gas the whining noise stops.
View 9 RepliesI noticed my engine whine more than it usual since the last few days. So, I took it to the dealership and have them check. They said that it is the idler pulley going bad.
View 4 RepliesWe have 3 company work trucks. They are F150's 2WD V6 - one is a 2008 and two are 2007s. They have all had thrust bearing problems. We just had the #9 thrust bearing replaced in the 2008 for the third time. The trans hasn't failed but starts making a whining sound at all speeds which varies in pitch relative to speed. The 2008 has had it replaced at: 40K, 60K, and now 70K. One 2007 had it replaced at 60K and 90K. The other 2007 had it replaced at 50K.
Our dealership says they've never seen anything like it & that our trucks are the only ones they've seen this on. They are suggesting it's happening due to driving behaviors. All 3 trucks have a single driver and aren't switched or shared. The 2008 doesn't carry or tow. The 2007s both carry hundreds of pounds of tools daily. This just seems like too much of a coincidence to be driver induced and that we're the only ones with these issues.
I need to diagnose an issue I've had with my 2007 Prius with 79,000 miles on it. Several months ago I noticed a distinctive whining/humming noise coming somewhere from the engine compartment of the car while driving. The noise may be present at lower speeds, but the volume of the noise appears to increase proportionately with my acceleration and as such is most noticeable at highway speeds of 50 - 70 miles per hour. As I accelerate faster, the noise level seems to increase. If I take my foot off the gas and coast, decreasing speed, the whining noise gets lower in volume. I believe I first noticed this noise about 6 months ago, but wasn't more proactive about it like I normally would be because at first the noise didn't seem overly loud and my extended warranty unfortunately was up once I hit 77,000 miles. Now 6 months after I first noticed the noise, I believe it's definitely louder than it was when I first heard it, so much so that I can pick it out over the radio being on at a decent volume.
After checking some forums I thought the culprit might be a wheel bearing. I took it into a local Midas shop at they informed me that my passenger-side front wheel bearing was actually breaking apart in pieces. Obviously I had that wheel bearing replaced but I was also hoping this was the source of the whining noise. Unfortunately that wasn't the case as driving it home the noise was still present. They also said the tires were not balanced properly (from my Toyota Dealership no less when I had them install new tires) so I had the tires rebalanced as well. They did take the car for a test drive but probably stop looking for issues with the car as soon as they saw the wheel bearing in that condition. Also that shop does not specialize in Prius' or hybrids so they might not be able to notice the noise that shouldn't be there like I can.
Other than wheel bearings, where this noise could be coming from. Some posts on here possibly pointed to the ICE water pump or transaxle fluid (which as far as I know has never been replaced since I bought the car new).
My 2007,4.6 is making a whinning noise from the front of the engine around the idler/tensioner/alternator. What I have read it might be a problem with the alternator getting cold, I forgot to mention it's cold up here. Fixed by changing the alternator and did the noise come back as it seems to be a design problem?
View 12 RepliesMy 07 SCREW 5.4L 4x4 has 77,000 miles and has a high pitch whining noise on front right side of engine. Sounds worse in the cold, increases with RPMs.
View 5 RepliesSo I am a hearing a whining noise in the rear end area sounds like its coming from passenger rear wheel well. It sometimes happens when driving forward. What it could possibly be ?
View 2 RepliesCouple of days ago when my wife turned the car on and started driving, the battery light came on and when she stepped on the gas it made a whining sound. Also when she moved the gear into reverse, the door locks did not lock automatically. Once the car was driven about 30 minutes and she got on the highway, the battery light turned off and the sound went away. I was not able to replicate that issue when she arrived that night or the next day.
Should I just replace the alternator even if the problem does not recur?
Experience such a noise? Seems to happen only when accelerating, but the noise seems to dissipate when you let go of the accelerator pedal.
Best way to describe would be a continuous whining noise.
April 2015 I purchased a 2013 CPO LS 460 with 7,700 miles. Immediately, I noticed the wind noise from all 4 doors. Dealer said nothing can be done.
Then we started hearing a whining noise from the transmission at low speeds. Dealer checked it out and determined it's the Transmission Pump and there is no fix for it. Filed a complaint with Lexus and was told they are aware of the problem but since it does not pose a safety or mechanical concern, they do not have a replacement part in the works.
I have an 04 Jetta 1.8T that I recently acquired and have a problem with a noisy manual tranny. Reverse is a bit noisy (more than usual) and when I get on it in 1st and 2nd gear it sounds like an awful whining noise. I have been told it could be either a bad throw out bearing or input bearing? BTW this thing shift perfect, like butter, no grinding at all.
View 4 RepliesI have a noise coming from my engine that i am not to sure what it is. I own a 2000 Passat 1.8t 5-speed,with 115k miles on it and oil changed just 500 miles ago. The noise comes and goes as it pleases I have never noticed a patter in it, i.e. cold weather warm/wet or dry weather. It just started at 114k miles i bought the car at 113k there for its a new car to me.

When I drive 60 miles exact constantly with windows closed and radio off, I hear a whine noise coming from the engine. I do not know if it's the engine or the gear shift of the transmission. If I drive over 65 mph or less than 55 mph, there is no whine sound at all. Is this normal?
View 1 RepliesIt all started after I refueled at Mobil after a rainstorm a month ago. Could be coincidence, but right after that the car started jerking wildly and making a howling wind noise from the front. Thought it was the transmission. Brought to Lexus dealership, they told me nothing was wrong as I had low mileage on the car. There are NO Check Engine lights on the dashboard. Car "quieted down" after that, but the noise remains EXCEPT at high speed when it's quiet.
In addition to that, the jerking / misfiring continues at stops, reversing, and slower speeds on occasion only.
I tried Techron FI cleaner, but it has not made a difference. Filled up several times since then.
What's wrong?
Just picked up a 05 with 99500 on it. Drives fantastic and previous to this I used to have an 05 way back that I drove new to 64k. Anyway I test drove it in the rain and with chatter between my wife and I with the sales rep I didn't notice it but now I found that there is a whining noise coming from the timing chain area of the motor. Its only when the car is on and it gets louder as you go towards the passenger side and away from the hybrid components. Here is the sound from my iphone near the motor.
View 3 RepliesRecently purchased a LS-460(CPO). The vehicle has 36,000 miles logged. I've had a few issues in the first few months:
1) Whining noise coming from the right front wheel assembly..front rt bearing worn.
2) Replaced homelink system..would not program.
3) Glove box had to be replaced due to not closing properly(adjustment not possible)
4) Plastic coating on all 4 locking lugnuts was chipping and rusting. I'm not trying to be a troll here..however, just not what I expected from Lexus. I really enjoy driving the vehicle..I'm just not sure I want to own it outside of a warranty.
