So today I took the gx470 on the highway and once is approached 70mph i noticed the steering wheel shaking... never before have i noticed this but today it happened i guess sporadically... just the steering wheel and nothing else... is this just the alignment? bad road? excessive speed? funky... lmk
View 8 RepliesI'm sensing a light steering wheel shaking when reaching 70mph. Also during the process of increasing the speed from 25-30mph and above I can hear a sort of beating noise which becomes more consistent when increasing the speed. Car goes straight (no left - right wandering). Now I'm assuming it may be something related with the bearings, but I guess the only way to find out is by sending it to a repair shop to understand if the noise come from one or two bearings and from front or the rear bearings?!
View 2 RepliesI bought 2006 Prius which clearly was involved in accident, though it was small collision in slow traffic but on my way home from seller it was clear this was something more serious when on motorway at 70mph steering wheel started vibrating when in straight direction, it disappeared on any little turn left or right. Ok, maybe just ball joint got loose.... but not, today I've lifted front and found little knocking sound in few positions when turning the wheels (L-R). Sound is coming from rack & pinion unit. Anyone removed, disassembled and successfully assembled it? My plan is to check with dealer what is the cost of replacement (quite expensive for gen I, expect it to be same for gen II) alternatively can get one from scrap yard but need to find the calibration procedure first. BTW did read codes as follow, it's clear after reset... so far.
View 5 RepliesI'm getting some vibration and steering wheel shake with my '04 GX... I have a 2004 GX with the differential dynamic damper installed. About 55-60mph it starts, and shakes the steering wheel back and forth. Sometimes it's completely smooth, but on other road surfaces it shakes. On full "comfort mode," the shake is much worse, but on Sport mode it dampens the shake to about 10% intensity, but it's sometimes still there. This is not bump steer, by the way.
So far, I've done:
-Brakes
-Alignment
-Front hubs
-2x wheel balancing with 2 different sets of wheels/tires
-lubed the drive shaft and prop shaft to fix the clunk (Clunk TSB has not been done)
-changed the power steering fluid
-checked all control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and sway bar bushings. All are solid.
I recently jacked up the front end and moved the wheels back and forth by hand. It seems like there is some looseness coming front the inner tie rods. However, I pushed and pulled and can't get a clunk or anything. I think it's coming from inside the steering gearbox. My VIN says it's before ST002-05, so that TSB aka "Steering Flutter" would apply, if it is that.
After 104k, are the front shocks due for a change? It does seem to nose-dive a bit on braking, but the shocks aren't leaking or anything. Would worn shocks cause steering wheel flutter on these trucks?
Lately my 2007 GX470's steering wheel has a shaking/vibrating problem whenever I apply the brake at speed above 50 mph or so. Without braking or with braking at slower speed, there is no problem at all -- everything is glass smooth.
1. I assume the front brake rotor is warped?
2. Will I need to change the rotor or is there a way to fix the warp (it that's the problem) without changing the rotor?
3. Approximate part & labor cost?
I plan to bring to dealer for a check up but would like to know ahead of time what to expect.

View 12 RepliesI bought 09 GX-470 4K miles ago..has 50K on it. Ran perfect when we bought it. wife said it started doing it 1 week later. I drove it and felt like warped rotors to me. replaced front rotors and pads with cheap wearever brand...I Know...I was sort of trouble shooting..did nothing ...did the back rotors and pads and seemed to fix it..did proper bed-in of new parts but, never checked at speeds above 55mph. recent trip got us up to speeds above 55... at these faster speeds when brakes are applied we get a nasty wheel wobble and a pulsing pedal...braking below 55 it feels fine.. thought's ?? last car was a 4runner which has the the same rotors and pads and never had a problem...could it be ABS ?? should I go with new oem rotors and pads ?
View 10 RepliesJust rotated my tires this weekend and noticed today that the steering wheel has a vibration in it at highway speeds, 65-70mph. It did not do this at all before I rotated the tires, why it's doing it now? Tires are fairly new and Bridgestones H/Ts.
I know my rotors are warped and need replaced but the vibration I'm referring to is when I am not braking.
I hit a curb while making too sharp of a right hand turn a week ago and now I notice some vibration in the steering wheel as I drive down the highway. The tire I hit was the rear passenger side. If I get wheel balancing done, do I need to just balance that tire or all of them?
View 3 RepliesWe purchase a left over 2005 V8 and upon driving home I notice the steering wheel shook at about 63mph and throgh 75mph. A tell tail sign of the front tires being out of balance. Hard to believe at 150 miles.
So when I brought it in for a dead battery and to fix some issues it had when we picked it up (so much for Perfect Delivery) of course they gave me crap about not being able to go that fast and typical BS.
I told them it wasn't normal and I'm not an idiot. Plus the speed limit is 70pmh in lots of places out here. Taking a ride with the tech of course they see it happen, and try some BS about it being common in 4WD, typical response instead of being upfront.
So they are going to re-balance all the tires, but my GF noticed a slight pull to the right so I'm going to have them align it too (love how dealers think I enjoy bringing it back in) but is there any issue with the Truck, something beyond the simple fix I think it is?
There's no way a wheel should shake like that, even though they said it was slight. My Z has 25,000 miles and I can't feel any shake, and I've never felt another AWD truck do that. I just want to make sure I couldn't find any balljoint issues or something.
So what is the deal with this whole steering wheel vibrating over 70mph? I have new balanced tires and the alignment has been done already. The steering wheel has a very annoying mild shake over 70mph on the highway. When I went back to the tire shop I saw the guy rebalance all 4 tires correctly. They told me to look into getting all alignment done. The car has 123,000 miles and had the 2 front struts replaced at 83,000 miles.
View 6 RepliesI had a balancing problem with some tires I bought with the car. At about 80 they shook and hard enough to not want to drive at that speed. I replaced them with Falken tires and it was so much better, but......
At 75-82 mph I still have a shake in the steering wheel. I bought the tires from Discount and they claim the rim is bent and they cannot completely balance the tire. I am going back once more to get a definitive response.
I am at a loss at what to do next. My other Lexus was smooth at any speed, even at 90. Smooth. 2007 Lexus es350
Yesterday had 5000 miles/6 months service performed on 2015 3500 miles AWD RX-350. Right after leaving the dealer felt that steering wheel is too light. After some driving it returned to normal, but with very light shimmer during driving (40-50 ml/h) and stops . Today was backing up from garage and shaking was much more noticeable when reversed and parked, also it was some kind of (I think) engine roar. After that drove almost 30 miles with some steering wheel light shimmering, but no other issues.
Is it normal car behavior, and I'm just paranoid ? Or, if there is a potential problem, what could trigger it, and how it could be resolved?
This summer, my steering rack failed, and I had it replaced with a remanufacutured steering rack. All went well, until a few weeks ago I started feeling a pulsing effect when turning, usually when turning right. On a few occasions, the shaking has become severe. It is a back-and-forth effect, about three times a second. It is bad enough that it has triggered a power steering error on two occasions. I took it to the garage who installed the rack, asking them to have a look at it, and they found nothing. Because the effect is regular, I am assuming that I am feeling the 12V power assist malfunctioning or reacting to faulty input.

They are balanced and all but just sound loud u can hear them rolling inside the cab sounds maybe like if I had mud tires but I don't they are all terrains. . View 1 RepliesSince I got my car back from the dealership after changing the rear shock this summer, I can feel a vibration in the car at highway speed. After the shock were replaced the car steering wheel was out of balance and pulling one side. After they attempt to align the car about 5 times it got a little bit better. Then I found out that they had an accident with my car and tried to hide it: [URL] ....
I suspect the tie rod may have been damaged so that could explain the steering issue. It also seems to have gotten worse over time. I'm trying to figure out the possible cause, if directly related to the tie rod damage or indirectly as if the tie rod damage could have caused uneven tire wear and then causing the vibration over time. I've attached some pictures, the 2 first are from the front passenger side, the 2 last from the front driver side. My tire are the Michelin pilot and this thread seems to suggest those tire might be hard to align properly: [URL] ....
I'm due for my winter tire change soon and see if thing gets better, I'll get them balanced too. I'll check at the same time for control arms/shock damage. But still, I would like some feedback and see if those tread wear are normal and hopefully get to the root of the problem (the outer edge on the tire in the back are much less damaged).
I have an 08 Camry v6 with 33K. Over the past 3-4 months I've noticed the wheel shaking at all speeds but got worse around 65-70mph. Went to the dealer a few weeks back and he put 2 new Michelin on the front, balanced all wheels and gave me a 4 whel alignment. The shaking at lower speeds is still there but not as bad, but around 60-70 MPH the wheels is all over the place in terms of shaking and controlling lanes. What it could be....
View 2 RepliesI recently bought a camry 2013 and I have a few questions.
-Some mechanical click sounds in the rear when navigating on tight turns at speed of 25 - 30 mph (the trunk is empty and there is nothing in th back seat)
-Transmission jerks when accelerating/decelerating between 25 - 45 mph speeds. If I accelerate from a stop and get up to 30/35 mph and go easy on the gas, then I can feel the transmission jerk (and get into a different gear ?).
-Occassionally the car seems powerless. This happens when the AC is turned on and the car refuses to increase speed on a level road and engine rpm at about 2300
-Mostly on highways, I keep pressing on gas and still the car doesn't pick up on speed.
-Remote doesn't function in the mornings. Every single morning. Have to click unlock a couple of times before it can work. It happens Occassionally during the day at any given hour.
-Occasionally Radio will restart for no reason.
-Can feel engine jerking (turning off with a thud) when turning off ignition
-Assisted braking works only between speeds 35 to 20 post which the braking by the engine will suddenly release.
To describe better this is what exactly happens: The car is travelling at 50 mph. To stop when I am applying little pressure on the brake pedal, say 10 lbs, the car begins to slow down, once it is in the 20 to 35 mph range, the brakes will behave like 15 lbs of pressure is being applied. Once the car is at around 20 mph, then all of a sudden the pressure will disappear and the car will come to a hault whenever it feels like stopping.
OR, from a speed of 35 mph take your foot off the accelerator and wait for the car to come to halt on its own. You can then feel how unstable the speed of the car gets due to this assisted braking not working properly ?
-Car seems unstable (shaking) sometimes while driving at over 70mph
-Never been able to get the advertised 35 mpg on highways.
-Many a times when I flick the indicator stick up (to turn the right blinker) there is a distinctive metallic 'click' sound like a washer/bush out of place. Same with the steering if I keep turning it all the way to left then it stops with a metalic click.
-The pasting of the interior (white colored) is coming off near where the left foot (dummy) pedal is.
Had my car checked prior to traveling, news brakes, drums, rotors, they also found ice under my car and in my wheels, the mechanic broke those off. I had no problems with the car prior to the mechanic giving me clearance for travel. When I arrived in Ohio, within a week of arrival my front end would shake at about 70mph, continuously. It is a significant shake. The whole front end (steering wheel, etc.). If I slow down to around 55 mph or 60 for around five to ten min. and then speed up it would stop for a while. If I am on the road for more than 30 min it will do it again. I attempted to replicate this weekend with no luck until I was on the road for 20 to 30 min. I felt it might be ice again so ran my car thru the car wash.

View 14 RepliesMy wife has a 2008 Dodge Charge SXT with the 3.5. The front passenger wheel is "shaking/bouncing" at highway speed, but only when turning that direction on a curve. It doesn't do this when turning left. We had the tires replaced, because that was the suggested fix because the tire was "chopped". They were at end of life anyway, past the ware bar. But it didn't work and it seems to be getting worse. One mechanic said he thought it was the wheel hub, another said tie rod. I replaced both front tie rod ends after the passenger one fell out about 18 months ago.
