I own a 2007 GX470. It has suddenly developed a loud whine. We replaced the power steering fluid (which we were told was filthy) but the whine is still there. The mechanic has suggested we drive it for about 500 miles to see if the noise disappears. I'm not crazy about driving it with the loud noise but don't mind. He says the car is safe to drive.
View 4 Repliesi have an 04 f-150 with a 5.4 motor. about 2000 miles ago the power steering pump started to whine really loud. I sucked out the power steering fluid and started it up and the fluid that back into the tank looked like it was gritty and rusty. I replaced it out a few times and no change. I then did the job of replacing the power steering pump which was about a 5 hour job.
It was quiet for about 5 miles and the new one started whining. Every week I have been sucking out the old fluid and replacing it and it still seems to be gritty. What could I do to quiet it down? the steering works perfect btw. I am looking at selling this truck and buying an 09 or newer ford and want to quiet it down before selling it. The truck has 88,000 miles on it and i am the original owner.
I'm beginning to notice a high pitched whine when I first start up my 2008 LS600hL and turn the wheel slightly (like backing out of my garage). It almost sounds like the beginning of a power steering pump problem, but I think our power steering systems on the LS are electric.
Experiencing a slight whine/growling sound when the car is still cold and the wheel is turned? Maybe the sound has been there all along and I'm just now noticing it.
I did a search on this topic and came up empty. My car is still covered under a CPO warranty, so I'm not too concerned, but was wanting to get opinions from the forum on possible causes (or if this sound is a normal part of the electric power steering we have).
I noticed over the last week that there was a pretty loud whine associated with turning the steering wheel. I checked the fluid level and it didn't seem low. I added a touch just to make sure. Took it into the dealership today and they called back and told me there's a bunch of fluid on the bottom splash pan. They haven't said what the culprit is yet. 46k miles on the car.

View 10 RepliesThis just started happening two weeks ago but it occurred 4 times already. When i first turn the car on sometimes the back speakers pop/crackle loudly and one time it occurred that the radio was not operational for about five minutes after the loud popping occurred. I have a full platinum lexus coverage on the vehicle but the issue is the dealership cannot replicate the problem with the car. On most of the post ive seen that the issue is most likely the amp. I was wondering if there is a way to replicate the issue at hand or am i going to have to records this and show it to the dealer.

View 7 RepliesOver the last few weeks I've been hearing what sounds like a failing pump of some sort when shutting off my '06 GX470. The sound lingers for just a moment after the ignition is cut off, and sounds like a loud, very fast tatatatatatatata. It doesn't always do this - sometimes I don't hear anything. I've been commuting in the GX for four years and I've only been hearing this intermittent occurrence over the last 3-5 weeks.
What this might be? Fuel pump? Air leveling suspension pump?

View 12 RepliesMy 2007 GX470 after always working perfectly, is now not putting out any audio from radio, CD, nav. When you start the car, you hear a pop sound. Should I assume it is the amp? Went to Car Toys and manager who was shorthanded suggested he try resetting the radio, but out how to reset it, it that is possible.
View 4 RepliesInteresting tale. After parking my GX on Friday night, it wouldn't start on Saturday. Starter seemed fine, Battery was cranking away but something seemed to be blocking fuel from getting to the carburetor. The Lexus dealer (50 miles away) said they never heard of a fuel pump or fuel filter being an issue on a 4 year old GX with 60K miles. I did take the battery to be tested and found out it was getting weak so I bought a replacement, but still couldn't start the vehicle.
I had AAA tow my GX to the closest dealer (Toyota) and they determined that mice had eaten through two sensor wires. They had to remove the manifold to get to the nest (?) or whatever they call these little mice homes. This meant new gaskets, replacing shredded wiring and sensors plus 4 hours labor.
Since I moved from the city to the country last year, this is the first I heard of this issue. Long term campers tell me the way they keep mice out of their engine compartments is by putting Bounce (anti-static dryer sheets) under the hood as this seems to stop the mice activity.
My GX and I are in the south and I sometimes have to leave it parked outside all day in 100F+ temperatures during the summer. Needless to say it gets extremely hot inside and sometimes takes a while to cool down. I started using my rear AC on full in conjunction with my main AC to facilitate cooling off the interior of the vehicle. I do this even when I'm by myself because... if I'm not mistaken... the rear AC uses a completely separate unit including a separate compressor. So it seems that it would cool things down faster running both systems. Can verify that the rear unit is completely independent of the main AC system?
View 6 RepliesI have a 2007 GX470. My range indicator was showing 34 miles left. I filled up the tank and at first my fuel guage still showed E and range was showing 34 miles. I shut off the car and the fuel gauge started showing a full tank but my range still showed 34 miles. As I drove, the range decreased to 0 and it is still showing 0 for the range. How can I reset this so that it will show the correct range? I asked the dealer if there is a reset for it and they said you can bring it in and we can diagnose it for $100.
View 2 RepliesI usually because mine was missing up a bit. My passenger side mirror when I put in reverse angles down adequately but my driver's side barely angles down? Searched forum and web and really couldn't find anything on it? Anyway to adjust the angle in reverse, I couldn't find anything in my manual at all either. I have it turned off now because it's virtually useless with the driver's side barely even angling down.
View 2 Replies2007 GX470 120,000 miles. Great vehicle and no problems until now. Seems I have an intermittent engine whine/whirring/zinging sound. I say intermittent because sometimes it there and other times its gone. It is fairly loud. Almost like an extremely loud alternator whine, only this sound is coming from the area near the ac compressor. There is some plumbing which runs just along the left side of the compressor pump and when I grab those lines and the little aluminum cannister in that area, I can feel the vibration in that system, big time. No vibration from the compressor pump though. Not sure what those lines are, but whatever they connect to is probably the culprit.
Its odd because the noise comes and goes. It doesn't fade in/out. It's either full blast loud, or totally gone. Once it's gone, it doesn't come back for a few days. Then one morning i go out and start the truck, and there it is again! Usually lasts for about a day, then it goes away for a week or so. After a week goes by, there it is again! Really odd. I had my mechanic look at it, but it wasn't making any noise that day (as luck would have it). He told me it was an awesome vehicle. Of course I agreed, but that didn't diagnose the problem.
I am having a problem with my rear suspension. The indicator lights on the dash (for the rear suspension control) are working correctly as are the controls on the center console, however the rear of my vehicle is stuck in a high position.

So the truck is fully loaded and were 5 hours into the trip to Florida. At the start of the trip, there was some transmission whine that Id never heard before, but that went away about 1/2 hour in. My wife takes over so I can nap and an hour into her shift the power steering goes out, the check engine light goes on and power is way down, with the engine bucking slightly. With my assisting with steering, we manage to get it into a motel parking lot right off the highway.
This same thing happened on this same trip eight years ago in my 2001 X. That Ford dealership tried to rip me off by charging double. I had to call other Ford dealers in the area to get comparative quotes and throw them in the service managers face to get his prices back in line.

View 5 RepliesFew weeks ago I bought my first Lexus, an '07 GX 470. It has roughly 75,000 miles on it, 2 previous owners before me. Anyway, I hear a noise sometimes which either sounds like a slight belt slip or fuel being pumped into the injectors when I give it a good amount of gas and the engine downshifts to accelerate. I had the dealer replace the drive belt(serpentine belt) because of 2 reasons, it needed to be replaced and I thought that could be the problem(I did not have to pay for it since I have had some problems with the Lexus dealership I bought it from, they did it as a "goodwill" gesture, that's a story for another thread) and inspect the tensioner and pulleys, they said the pulleys and tensioner were in good working order.
I drove the GX home tonight after said replacement, and I still noticed the same noise. The best I can describe it is like I said above, a slight belt slipping noise or it could also be described I guess as fuel being injected under acceleration as soon as the trans downshifts to accelerate. I am just curious if this is normal for this engine or do I have a possible problem? It's covered under the Lexus used car warranty for another 5 months so if there is something wrong, obviously I would like it fixed under warranty if something is wrong. One thing I should probably mention is, the noise is semi quiet and I guess the average person might not even notice it.
I was using the12V power outlet to power a small air compressor to a small air tank. Had to answer a phone and forgot about it for a while. When I returned, the air compressor was not working. I figured I either blew a fuse or fried the compressor. I pulled the 12v plug from the power outlet and inserted it in the cigarette liter outlet and the compressor still worked.
I then plugged my radar detector into the 12V outlet and it did not work.So I figureed I blew a fuse. I pulled the 15 amp fuse from #54 but it looked good. To double check I swapped this fuse with the 15 amp fuse for the rear wiper and the fuse was fine.
So I am thinking the 12V power outlet socket must be bad. Isn't that why we have fuses -to protect an expensive part with a cheap one? Is this an easy DIY job?
Sometimes I wonder why I have this car serviced....I have a 2000 Passat V6, just had the timing belt, water pump and infamous ABS control module replaced. Also had problems with the secondary air system (I think that's what it's called??) - another mechanic identified a couple of blocked areas and repaired. So now, all of the flashing lights are gone, but there is a very high pitched whine that is pronounced when I'm turning and sounds like it's coming thru the steering column? Goes away after about 20 minutes driving - should I take the car back??
