I have a 73 commando and if it sits for a couple of days the glass fuel filter goes dry and I have to pump and pump the accelerator to get it to start. I guess the fuel is draining back down into the gas tank. Had a carb kit put in. Go to a electric pump?

My problem: For the first year I owned the truck, everything ran fine and it started up really quickly even after it sat for a few days or a few weeks. I have since, for about the last year or so, had to crank it for 30-45 seconds to get it to start. This all started around the time my fuel pump went out. I replaced it with an Airtex fuel pump from Autozone. I also installed a glass in line filter before the carb in front of the distributor.
I noticed that after about 4-6 hours, the fuel had drained out of the filter and that's when I would have to crank it forever to get it going. It also seems like there is no fuel in the carb as it doesn't even try to start when it first gets cranked. I thought this was a bad pump, so I bought a new one last week and tried it again. Sure enough after about 4-6 hours, everything is empty again and it takes forever to start it. So it's not a bad pump, or so I think.
The other day I backed it into my driveway and left it, something I never do. I checked about 4 days later and there was still fuel in the filter. This makes me think that gravity is making it drain back to the tank.
Is there something that would cause this? Also I have found a one way fuel check valve online that is supposed to remedy this type of problem. Do they work for this situation? Or is there something else I should be doing to fix this? It has taken a bit of a toll on my starting system having to crank so long all the time. I have so far had to replace my starter, starter solenoid, and all the battery cables, starter cable, terminals, etc. due to excessive wear.

Having an issue with my 03' Accent. I'm having an issue of my coolant tank filling up but it is not being drawn back into the radiator when the engine cools down. I have replaced the radiator with a new unit because the filler neck of the original radiator was damaged sometime in the past and the cap would not seal good enough to hold pressure . Looks like heat damage to me but I don't know for sure. The system now holds pressure but now I'm having the current issue. My first thought was a head gasket issue creating pressure in the system and forcing coolant into the tank.
The car has 155k miles and runs good overall and is not overheating. I performed a "block check" test using the chemical method that detects combustion gasses in the cooling system and that test was negative. I also pressure tested the system by pressurizing to 16 psi and was unable to detect any leaks anywhere on the engine / radiator and the pressure did not drop until I released it. I guess the next thing to try will be a compression test to see if I have any low cylinders. So, for whatever reason my cooling system is not creating enough of a vacuum to draw the coolant back into the radiator when it cools down. Does this sound like a head gasket issue? after shutting my jeep down I ve heard liquid moving. I decided to find the source. it turns out that I was hearing the oil draining back into the pan.
I was under the jeep with my ear next to the pan, no doubt of source.
this lasted about 15- 30 seconds before stopping. the front of the jeep was raised about 6", as I had parked it that way.is this concerning?
I was recently going to change my valve/rocker arm cover gasket, but decided to wait because it did not seem to be leaking and I did not want to use the inexpensive cork fel pro gasket that I had bought, I decided to wait until I could afford the more expensive gasket.
I did notice thru my oil fill cap that there is a lot of crud under the cover and I am concerned that my oil return drains are partially clogged.how can I clean these drains when I do change the gasket? since it has been strongly recommended here that I do not disturb the crud I m not sure how I should approach this. could vaccuming the loose crud with a shop vac be okay?
ps. dropping the oil pan is not an option right now because of the extensive labor involved on this model and the expense of all the new seals and gaskets required. I ve bought 200 bucks worth of parts and fluids this month and it will be awhile before I can afford more.
right now I have brake shoes, tranny filter and fluid, above gasket, oil and oil and fuel filters waiting on me to work on, and other non mechanical things.
to summarize my questions...
1) does noisy oil drainage concern you?2)how can I clean oil drains?
a. can I pour kerosene thru to clean oil drains, and to flush oil pan, which I can t drop right now?
b. can I shop vac under the valve cover?
c. should I add sea foam to oil for a bit before changing?
I just changed my fuel tank and now when I try to fill it up it keeps blowing back it never did this before.

View 5 RepliesOn a recent long drive home through some very hot weather, I noticed a strong smell of gas at the back of the truck. Now, I've caught a whiff of gas before the trip but it was always faint. Figured it was some gas that dripped on fill up.
At a rest area, I go and look around see no leaks and finally check the fuel cap. Lots of pressure trapped. I ended up leaving the cap off the rest of the run home. Can't find a cause.
I have had my airride for a few months now, and it is time to drain the water from the air tank. I have a water trap that I use every time i fill up at a gas station, but I would like to drain the tank to make sure there is not water built up in there. I have scoured the interwebs and have not came across a video or specific set of instructions on how to do this.

View 4 RepliesWe have a 2008 Buick Lucerne. Now that the weather has become humid, we have been using the air conditioner more. We noticed that the carpet was wet on the rear passenger floor. Shortly after that, we noticed it on the driver rear floor. The dealer repair guys are puzzled and say it can't be the air conditioner as it would get the front passenger floor wet and not the back. They blamed on a luggage rack or sun roof (which we do not have!) or on the rain or car wash. We haven't been through the car wash and it hasn't rained here in over 3 weeks. What would cause this to occur and how do we fix it?

View 14 Repliesabout 2 years ago, my 99 cherokee would start acting up at about 1/4 of a tank of gas...i would hit the throttle and it would lose all power like it wasn't getting any gas, it wouldn't stall out, but as soon as i would let off the throttle it would go back to running normal..... i filled the tank and it ran fine again.... i don't drive it much i've only put maybe 3000 miles on it since then, and now it's doing the same thing at half a tank now.... it even stalled out a couple times while idling..... do i need a fuel pump? a coil maybe? it usually runs great in the mornings when it's cold.... but when it gets hot out in the afternoon it starts doing it, or if its been running for a while....
View 10 RepliesThis has been an ongoing issue for months. I fill up the Compass's gas tank all the way and, at the next stop light or paused traffic, it will stall. My workaround is to fill the gas tank almost all the way full and it doesn't stall. But, what could be causing this issue? I've seen repair suggestions for things such as power control module valve and connector switch for fuel pump, but haven't seen anything definitive.
View 7 RepliesSo my 7.3 started sputtering and lost power, died on the side of the road. I wasn't far from home put about 8 gallon of diesel in the tank with a couple of fuel jugs and it fired right up.
Gauge was reading 1/8 of a tank and low fuel light did not come on. (low fuel light comes on when you start) Gauge came up to about 1/2 after putting fuel in.
What happened? Gauge was always reliable and low fuel light always did work. Only work done to fuel system was had new tank straps put on a couple of months ago.
I have a 2006 F250 c/c LB and I am curious, how much fuel is left in the tank when the low fuel light comes on?
View 8 RepliesThis van has had a couple of fuel pumps, no surprise there, and i need to look through my paperwork and find out how many miles the current one has on it, but it has the STRANGEST habit I've ever had on any vehicle. Starts fine, runs fine, no fuel pump noise when van is running, and when you turn it off, the fuel pump creeks on and off for several minutes.
I mean a strange creaking noise almost like a shorted electrical device or a vehicle's brakes when you park it on a hill and the breaks creak as it settles into place. I'm probably doing a lousy job of describing this but i don't know how else to describe it!
ALSO, if you lay under the van and wait til it stops creaking, you can tap the bottom of the tank and it will creak for a few more seconds. You can tap repeatedly and make it creak more. Is it about to explode? Can i trust it on a road trip?

I have a leak in my rear fuel tank, the front tank has been blocked off and is not used, The leak is at the seam of the two part tank, once removed is there a way to seal this? or should I just replace it?
I have a tank that's been out of my truck for a couple years. I want to clean it up real good inside before re-installing. Are there any products you can recommend that will give a deep clean on the inside to remove any gunk and some slight rust? Also, is there a product that should be used to coat the inside of the tank after it's been deep cleaned?
View 2 RepliesI am unable to get fuel delivery from tanks to engine in normal operation. I can however get pumps working with jumper wire to them. It will start with ether but not stay running on it's own. Could this be a relay or something in tfi thing ?
