I had my local race shop install my new PPE headers and how I have a rubbing and grinding sound while taking right turns. They have had the car for a few extra days and they say they cant seem to find the cause of the problem. It rattles on a pot hole, it grinds on right turns and sometimes vibrates on highway cruise control driving.
View 14 RepliesI have noticed this rubbing, not quite grinding sound/vibration when I take off and turn. For instance pulling out of a parking lot and turning either left or right. Truck will do it only after it's been driven a while. I originally thought it was just the limited slip ratcheting but recently just changed the rear axle fluid adding Amsoil this time. I did not add any friction modifier because I didn't think the Amsoil needed it. So after going on a 500 mile trip I find it is still doing it. The truck sits at the stock ride height and has stock size wheels and tires on it. What it could be ? It only happens in the turn, not while driving straight. It still sounds like the differential but just want to be sure.
View 7 Replies2011 ISF with clunking and rubbing noises coming from the passenger front side, especially when making right turns or hitting a pot hole. It really does sound like something is loose and bouncing around when hitting a pot hole, and its the same noise when taking a right turn at any speed. It doesn't make any sense!!! Could be engine bay or could be in the tire well, unsure. We took the tire off today and found nothing wrong and no rubbing points around. We checked the control arm, strut, sway bar, backing plate, wheel bearing for looseness. Cant find anything wrong at all...
View 12 RepliesI just put on headers and after running into the infamous rattle sound I found an additional issue. The steering linkage seems to be rubbing or binding on right hand turns. Any normal 90 degree right hand turn will prevent me from taking the wheel beyond a certain point. I have had to make wide swooping turns. I feel the steering wheel stop further progress turning to the right and it gets a heavy rattle feel in the steering wheel.
View 1 RepliesI have an 08 Toyota Sienna and yesterday I started to notice a very slight grinding or rubbing sound when I apply the brakes coming from the passenger side front wheel. I can only hear the grinding or rubbing sound when I am going very slowly (like the last 20 feet when approaching a stop sign). The sound pulses slightly like two surfaces that are not parallel are rubbing. There is no pulsation or wobble felt in the brake pedal. I'm thinking it's time to get the rotors turned, but it could also be the brake pads.

View 14 RepliesHeaders will probably be the next mod that I do to my F, I have read a good bit about them on here, but no one really says anything about how they are doing long term ( any issues from heat on engine bay plastics after years of use) or how the coating holds up after years of use as track or DD or just anything else that seems to be an issue over time after being installed.
View 14 RepliesPPE Engineering has been getting lot's of inquires from us ISF owners about the feasibility of making an Equal Length Header for the ISF similar to the one they make for the RCF. Since I am a past customer, live nearby, have another vehicle and am a pretty nice guy they called and asked if I might be interested in having my car test fit for Equal Length Headers.
While discussing this with them, I suggested that if modified RCF Headers wouldn't fit, maybe they could accomplish the equal length task by using long tubes. Well, it seems that RCF headers will in fact fit in an ISF, and the headers they built for me were also Long Tube. How sweet is that? But, the EL, LT headers must be used with the PPE Exhaust due to the exit point of the collector.
I went for Dyno testing yesterday, and it appears I lost 7HP at the top end and gained only 1.5 lb ft of torque at the high end. I also gained grunt at the bottom. My Seat of the Pants tells me the car is faster.
I don't know why it ran out of breath at the high end. Nothing else has changed.

As far as sound goes, in the cabin with the exhaust open, the drone remains in the same area (between 1900 and 2100 RPM) but is much lower in volume. I can now carry on a phone conversion (with bluetooth hands free) with the exhaust in the open position. The volume level does increase, however, when under acceleration through that RPM range.
Now the ISF does not have a lumpy engine by any means, but it idle with the old headers, the sound (both inside and outside the car) had a sort of lumpy growling quality to it. The sound is now very smooth, again inside and outside. The harmonics seemed to have changed.
Edit - My wheels and tires have changed. I'm now running RCF wheels with larger 295 vs 285 rears, so wheel weight is up a bit!

Appears to be coming from the front end, I put I on a rack and drove it but couldn't isolate a cause. I rotated the tires, replaced the brakes to be sure there was no warping. Everything looks good, but something clearly isn't.

When I make a hard left turn (more than 90 degrees), I now hear a sound from the front left wheel area. It sounds sort of like the sound a plane makes when flying overhead. It's sort of like something is rubbing.
This started all of a sudden last Thursday. I thought it would go away. It doesn't sound normal and it doesn't happen when I turn right. It doesn't affect my steering. I don't recall hitting anything (note I sait recall).
Obviously, I got out of the truck and examined the entire area but I don't see anything unusual. I drove around in circles with my head out the window trying to figure this out.
Just got a 2010 lariat supercrew...I put 1900 miles on it so far. When slowly letting off the accelerator (doing between 20-30 mph and between 1000-1500 rpm) there is a distinct rubbing sound for about 1-2 seconds...it is now sounding more like grinding now...took it to the shop today...(they couldn't duplicate (because service rep documented 60 mph instead of the 20-30 mph...went back at the end of the day to ride with the tech, and i was able to duplicate so now they have something to work with....also the noise happens mostly when the path of travel is either level road or slight to great incline..it has not happened on a down slope....
View 14 RepliesI've owned this 2012 Lariat 5.0 for about 6 months (has 49,500 miles on it, approx 6000 are mine).
For awhile, I had kinda thought I sensed a slight vibration/grinding when making right-hand turns. But it seems to be getting more noticeable now. It does not happen with every RH turn, but its not all that rare of an occurrence either. (Does NOT happen with LH turns.)
In addition ............ possibly related, sometimes while breaking, I get a somewhat similar grinding sensation, just before coming to a stop. Again, it does not happen every time.
I tend to think both of these could be a brake issue, but wondered if anything in the driveline could be contributing ? (I should note that I'm in 2-High)
I got a strange one. 03 expl 4x4 xlt, started making a weird sound, almost like a rubbing, or a light grinding, comparable to the sound and seat of the pants feel you would get if say you ran out of good brake lining and were creeping the car forward at half mph while dragging the breaks slightly but (except it is when you are stopped and in P). Break pads are fine, just when you come to a stop and put it in park. lasts for about 1-3 seconds. No tranny slippage or other issues yet, all seems to be working. I don't use 4x4 hardly at all but not in last 6 months since there is no snow. Since it is so short I cannot pop the hood to track it down. Torque converter? Fan clutch?
View 3 RepliesA few days ago I purchased a brand-new 2015 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T LTD, with about 80 miles on the odometer. During the test-drive, I noticed a rubbing/faint grinding sound which emanated from the right front corner, and only lasted a second or two. I was driving straight ahead at about 30mph on a relatively smooth paved road at the time.
The dealer told me they were aware of the noise, and claimed a small stone was to blame. (it had been test driven a number of times). I was assured that the problem would be fixed when I picked up the car.
On the drive home from the purchase, it did it again, and has done it every day that I've driven it. (about 150 miles on it now). Are these wheels susceptible to having stones lodged in them?? (assuming that's actually what's causing the noise).
Early this week my car started making a loud knocking/rubbing sound (Kind of in between when your brakes are ground down to the rotor and a knocking pattern).
FIRST, it started only when I turned slightly left or left.... NOW, it's doing it as I go straight and when I turn to the right as well... oddly enough it's not as bad when going left anymore...
What this could be?? And if it's an easy DIY fix..... (maybe a link on how) and how much the part(s) might be?? I've taken video (for sound as I drive)...but not sure if I can upload it (size limit).
I have 2003 F150 SuperCrew 5.4L XLT. For past month or so, have been hearing metal rubbing sound and had shakes in braking - as well as a "grabbing and pulling" sound near brake pedal - very aggravating to say the least. Weird thing is the grabbing and pulling sound only happens under 10 miles an hour or coming to a complete stop. (The grabbing sort of sounds like the sound the ABS makes when hit really hard)
Yesterday I had brakes and rotors replaced - mechanic said front rotors were beyond turning - very bad. 135,000 miles on truck. Felt more comfortable until I pulled out of shop and when I applied brakes, had the same grabbing/grinding sound, but no pulling. Went back to mechanic and had him ride with me to hear sound, and he is stumped.
Knew it was safe(r) to drive since new pads/rotors installed, but when I got up to 55mph and barely touched the brakes, the steering wheel began to shake violently - but no sound/grabbing from brake pedal area like I get when I am 10mph or under. Really at a loss right now.. What's going on?
Truck is a 2WD, also hear some thump thump thump sounds from front left tire, which are only one year old, but tire man said that was from suspension arm or something - nothing to worry about he says.
Some people have said "bearing" or "hub" but when brakes were replaced, the bearings were repacked...is this the same thing? Is the current problem safe to drive with? I do not take vehicle out of the county - just to work and back and hunting on weekends.
I've got a new issue that is happening on the front end of my truck. Whenever I try turning my wheel while driving, I get this rubbing/grinding noise coming from the front of my truck. It only happens when the wheels are in motion. It seems to happen less when I'm driving at higher speeds, but I can notice it make the sound at any speed. I tried driving it slowly in an empty parking lot while turning and it's definitely making the sound every time the tires rotate.
I took it in for an alignment because this was happening every time I drove, whether it be driving straight or making a turn. Now that my alignment has been fixed, it no longer make this noise if I am driving in a straight line, so it only seems to happen when I'm turning. I had the mechanic check to see if they could reproduce the issue. The mechanic was able to hear what I hear, but when he put it on the lift at the shop, he was not able to reproduce the sound.
I have a 2000 F-250 Crew Cab with Lariate Trim package (not sure how that could be relevant to the issue, but it might be?) and auto locking Hubs. Recently, the truck has taken to making an intermittent grinding/Rubbing sound that comes seems to come from the wheels. I can not locate the sound exactly since it only happens when I'm Driving, I have never heard the sound at any speed lower than 20 mph or when the 4x4 is engaged either manually through he hubs or the selector in the cab when the hubs are in auto. All this leads me to think that I need to replace the autolocking hubs, but i'd like a second opinion (or even third) before I go to the trouble of replacing them.
