I have a question with aftermarket exhaust (particularly JoeZ and Borla) I was wondering after you installed the exhaust do you now get increased exhaust fume smells in the cabin when the windows or moonroof is open? When I had my 350(F-sport exhaust) I couldn't cruise with the moonroof open without filling the cabin up with fumes.

View 12 RepliesI have been getting exhaust in my car cabin since last fall. It is worst when I first start up the engine. Once I get driving, it's not so bad. Switching off the heat or recirculating the air does nothing to change things. I used a CO detector in the cabin and the alarm didn't go off, but it still worries me that I might be breathing in carbon monoxide. And none of the shops have been able to diagnose it, let alone fix it. The first shop installed a new 'flex pipe'. The dealer thinks it's coming from a gasket near the flex pipe. The exhaust manifold is not cracked. A muffler shop said there was no leak. Is it possible that exhaust is somehow getting mixed into the air via a faulty valve or vent?
View 6 Replies2003 Elantra GT (hatch): Over the past month I've been smelling fuel in the cabin. It's more of a light 'fume' kind of smell rather than a heavy fuel smell. Here are some observations:
- It smells most of the time but not always, and it varies in intensity.
- It doesn't seem to be affected by whether the car is moving or not.
- I can't isolate where it's coming from.
- You can also sometimes smell it outside the car.
- I don't see any puddles under the car.
- Not sure if this is related, but about once a month the car has real trouble starting. No apparent rhyme or reason to that, and no codes.
I've had it looked at and the shop said they didn't see anything. They did a smoke test. I don't have 100% confidence in their competency (but they're fantastically nice!). They thought it might have been residue from a previous repair they did - because their technicians aren't clean and might have gotten it in the car?!
I read a similar problem where people suggested a seal on the fuel rail dampener.
Just got my ark grip exhaust and noticed it being a little too loud in the cabin. I thought they were suppose to be pretty quiet inside...
View 8 RepliesI have a 2014 RX 350. I have noticed an intermittent issue with exhaust smells coming into the cabin when the car is on recirculate and I am at highway speed. It happens when I am first accelerating after I've entered the freeway. If I get the odor, I can make it go away by briefly hitting the recirc/fresh button to bring in fresh air for a few moments. This doesn't happen driving around town.

Changed the oil (using Hyundai OEM filter).
Cleaned the throttle body to stop the rough idle.

And the reason for my post: Had a smell coming through the vents that just smells like rotten leaves. Changed the cabin air filter. Smell still there.
Where does the cabin air filter air intake go? I want to make sure there are no obstructions or smell inducing things living in this intake.
I guess my question is..Where does the air come in to the cabin from and where best can I make sure its unobstructed?
'13 Sonata with only about 8500mi. When I put the front defrost on, the air starts to smell like exhaust. This is not only while stopped but also driving. The only maintenance done so far are regular oil/fuel filter changes - last one was within a month ago and didn't notice this smell before, though we didn't use defrost for fall.

View 2 RepliesOnly had happened a few times in the last month. I start the car and it idles okay. drive down the road and then come to s stop and there's some blue smoke. It smells like burning oil. it only has happens 2 times in the last 2 months. only when its really cold it has happend. If I rev it when its happening I can see a big plume of bluish smoke and it smells like burning oil. after i drive after that no more smoke.

car does not burn any oil between oil changes. oil stays at the same level.
did break an oil pan about 4 months ago. when I replaced it no signs on sludge.

Car has had a rough idle for a long time. only when its a cold start and only last about 20 seconds. When I boost it or redline the car which is very rare no smoke at all. I have always kept the oil more on the high side of full. I usually fill it right to the high mark on the dip stick.
I have a 97 f 150 with the 4.2 bad miss on # 6 changed plugs and wires still missing. Also have a bad tick and exhaust smells like fuel. Check engine light is blinking.

Recently it has started puking coolant and the overflow tank smells like exhaust. The oil cap has some coolant sludge on it. But there is no coolant mixed with the oil. Or oil in the coolant.
I am pretty certain these are the signs of failing head gaskets. The truck has 193000 miles on it now.
Want to keep it on course. But keep it reliable. So do I buy new engine or do I just replace head gaskets?
i cant find the dyno post but didnt the isf make more power with headers and stock exhaust?
View 6 RepliesWent to a road course for the first time on Sunday. After about 10 laps the car started smoking bad from the exhaust. The smoke was thick and white. There were professional drivers present (driving school) as well as a lexus service manager there looking at the car after the run. The smoke was thick but without that sweet smell of coolant. This was the hardest the car has ever been run but also maintained normal oil and coolant temperatures. After a bit of resting the smoke cleared up and never came back, my drive home was 2 hours long and car still seems ok. Engine sounds good, oil very clean, what could it have been? I have no cats so its going to be more obvious than normal.

I hold it around 3k and the shift and let off the gas and it's a Orchestra of amazing noises that are Oh so addicting. Secondly, are there any negatives to doing this? Or that sometimes I hear the loud thud / pop when slowing down but not everytime . What is the true cause of these glorious noises.

View 5 RepliesHaving a sound from my exhaust. Basically when the car is rolling along around 25 MPH or so, and my foot is not on the gas, as soon as I gently touch the gas pedal, I get a soft "thump" sound. This basically tends to happen in 5th or 6th gear only.
The previous owner had done a muffler delete on the stock exhaust so I figured there was some sort of back pressure issue because of this.
Finally out of frustration, I sprung for a new Borla Catback exhaust system, hoping to eliminate this issue. While the thump sound is slightly less, it still happens!

The problem with my truck is not that its regen'ing too often, the problem is that its STUCK in regen cycle. For the past 4-5 days my truck has been going into regen about 1-2 min after i start driving it, every single time i start her up. If i start my truck in the morning and let it warm up for a few min, i come out and my truck is idling higher then normal and has an increased exhaust smell, but when i aply the brake the idle goes back to normal. Then i start driving up the street and BAM "cleaning exhaust filter" message comes up and the and immediately the sound of the exhaust and induction changes and it sounds like sputtering/knocking.
Sometimes the the engine will flutter in decel or shutdown. HORRIBLE gas mileage, Reduced engine response and power, and white smoke is cooler temps. Basically all of the normal signs of a regen cycle, am i wrong? Im pretty sure its either a dpf sensor or possibly something wrong with the DPF? I haven't had one problem with my 2010 besides an egr valve and she has 167k miles and is completely stock and im very happy with my truck! 2010 6.4L
