Golf VI R :: Jerks When Shifting Normally?
Sep 12, 2012
So, the R is my first stick car and I've only been driving stick for 5-6 months now. I know that smoothness comes with time. I feel pretty comfortable with my skills overall (still have some issue with hill starts and smooth starts in general). Wen I don't know what I'm doing wrong when it comes to upshifting from 1st to 2nd. All other shifts are smooth.
When I try to shift normally, the car jerks. So, I tried releasing the clutch slower, this gets rid of the jerk but it bogs the engine. I've tried various things like getting back on the gas a little sooner, or pausing/slowing down the clutch release through the engagement point but I just can't seem to figure out what works and what doesn't. Is this just an issue of a larger gear ratio gap, rev hang, or what?

My 2002 Grand Prix jerks when shifting. It originally happened earlier in the spring but fixed itself after I had a coolant leak fixed. Now it's happening again. The coolant and ATF levels look okay. I found one possible fix on Google but wanted to get some other opinions first. What's wrong, or how urgent it is? Is this something I might be able to fix myself without a lot of trouble?

I have a 2010 Matrix with automatic transmission. 5.5 year old with only 44,000 KM ... The transmission jerks annoyingly when up-shifting from gear one to two. I replaced the transmission oil and had Toyota service confirm there is a problem.
I read that the accumulator should be checked and adjusted as well as the throttle which can be done without removing the transmission, but Toyota tells met hat everything is now electronic and there is nothing to adjust. How to proceed?

I made a horrible decision after my Ranger got totaled and bought a 94 Jetta... When I first got it, the car had trouble starting in the rain but eventually she would fire up. If I drove it immediately away after finally starting, it would jerk really bad when I gave it gas while shifting, until 4th gear. Once she ran for a bit it would smooth out. Nowadays if it rains the car won't start at all, just keeps turning over and I have to wait for a nice dry sunny day then it starts right up.
My mechanic worked on it recently and replaced a sensor in the distributor and the crank shaft sensor, because they showed up on the diagnostic as bad. Once his work was complete, he said he sprayed the engine with water and it started. So that was a week ago and it's raining and it won't start, the engine just turns over so it's not a starter issue. The car only has 143,000 but I am gonna get rid of it this fall but I just wanna know what this wet weather problem is.

2001 F-350 w/powerstroke. Tranny is the automatic w/overdrive. right at 170K miles and it has not been serviced since I've owned it (about 10 years).
Lately it is jerking when shifting, especially noticeable when I'm pulling my 5er (10K lbs). Almost a "clunk". No warning lights or OD flashing. I live at 6000 feet and play at over 9K so mountain driving is routine. Fluid is up to right spot on the dip-stick.

Trans has new solenoids in the trans but is shifting too firm sometimes from 1-2 or 2-3.. It is tolerable going up, but when slowing down it jerks really bad from 2-1. Sounds and feels horrible for the trans and miserable during stop and go traffic. Ive had to switch it to Manual and start off in 2nd gear. Im deleted, with intake, and a custom sct x4 tune. My main question is there any way a new tune could have better shift points?

Transmission Problems in 2001 Volvo XC70 with 123k... A year ago, I had the input and output speed sensors replaced after the service light came on indicating a transmission problem. The transmission has always made a clunking sound and now it is having a hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd when doing city driving for a while. It jerks significantly when it finally shifts. It is usually fine in the morning on my 3 mile commute but if I am running around town or after coming off of the highway, it has a hard time shifting. The book states only to have the transmission fluid changed every 52,500 if you use the car to tow which I do not. Should I just give it up and get a new car as everyone I know is recommending? I love this car and otherwise it is in beautiful shape.

I have a 94 Ford Crown Victoria with 180,000 miles. I got it from my grandmother in 2008. It's a great car a runs like a dream most of the time. Here's the problem though...for the past three summers, when the temperature outside gets above about 70 degrees, it starts giving me transmission problems. The shifting becomes rough, and it revs and jerks. It does this all summer and then when the weather cools off again it runs beautifully. Do I need a new transmission or is there something less expensive that I can do to fix this? Why does the transmission act up only in warm weather?

I have a 2006 Subaru Forester automatic with about 40,000 miles on it. When it gets cold out, I notice that when I first start driving the car, it jerks/lurches and makes a loud noise when shifting from first to second and second to third. When the car warms up after driving for awhile, it doesn't do it anymore. It's much colder here (high today of zero), the car is doing this much more often. I brought it to the dealer and they completely flushed the transmission fluid (which they said looked yellow instead of red/orange??), but it is still making the noise and having trouble shifting in the cold. They said need to take the transmission apart, so I've been leary about taking it back. My husband thinks I should just drive it until it dies and then get a new transmission if needed.

My trusty 1994 Ford F150 is starting to show her age, I think. I'm noticing a few issues:
1 - most concerning to me is she jerks pretty hard when shifting through the first few gears during relatively warm weather. The cold snap has abated the issue for now. Had the transmission fluid checked - mechanic said it's fine.
2 - This is a fun electrical issue. I'm driving down the highway when suddenly the cruise control shuts off, as does the speedometer and the digital odometer. The Tach still works, as do the rest of the gauges. Maybe 10 - 15 minutes later, they all come back on. It's done this a couple times.
3# - Really annoying but very minor; when I push down on the foot feed, there's a bit of a squeak in the engine. I'm guessing it's a tensioner pulley on the serpentine belt, but why it would only happen when I give it some gas?

I did some Autocross today and it was fun as always, but my launches had some serious issues. I seem to bog down no matter what RPM I launch at. I did not go particularly high, but I launched from 3500 to 4500. When drag racing, I was launching around 5000. I did not think that was correct for launching for autocross, but who knows. I know that the video is not that great, but the boging is very noticeable as the car jerks up and down. It just loses momentum and RPMs drop. BTW, I have a VF Stg II, stock clutch and ESP was off. Even with the issues, my best time was near the top. [URL].................

Yesterday I jump on the freeway, shift to 5th and the whole car jerks. Happened again later that night. After that I was more focused when shifting to 5th and it hasn't done it since. Could it be this B&M short shifter that the last owner installed? I also noticed since day one that when the car is cold it doesn't like going into first sometimes, meaning I can't throw it all the way to the left and then up to get to first. It's more like a little to the left and then up but when the car is warmed up I can throw it all the way to the left.

Car is stock and I seem to be getting a lot of jerking when I am on and off of the throttle peddle. It feels like a combination of sloppy motor mounts and a throttle response issue. What may be causing this? I am willing to bet that the motor mounts are partly to blame but it seems that there is more going on here.

Whenever I brake hard the steering wheel jerks to the right and the car follows. And it'll stay to the right until I got about third gear or if I shake the wheel back and forth. Not sure what it is. What could cause this? 01 jetta wolfsburg.....

I am at a complete loss as to what could be wrong with my 2002 VW Gold Cabrio GLX automatic transmission. In the last month the car has been to 3 different mechanics & none of them could solve this problem. The basic scenario: The car starts up fine. The engine will run & everything works fine (AC, radio lights etc).
If I put the car in Drive or reverse...it will idle & move. However, the moment I touch the gas pedal, whether in reverse or Drive, the car jerks & dies. If I put it in park & try to start it up again, the engine will turn over & the car will start, but the moment I touch that gas pedal again, same thing, jerks & dies.
Things that have been replaced so far: ignition coil, fuel pump, the catalytic converter has been removed. spark plugs replaced. Now they are saying that the problem is electrical & are working with the fuzes & wires. The car ran fine for 3+ years & I've had no problem with it.
Yesterday the mechanic called me & said the car was ready for pick-up. I go over there, pay him, I reverse out of the driveway & the minute I press the gas, it jerks & dies. Is this problem really electrical? Or is this third mechanic also grasping at straws?

So I've been dealing with this for a little while now and it's starting to really irritate me. With my 850, when cold, it drives awesome- perfect engagement, pressure, etc. When hot, I'm noticing that even with the pedal to the floor while in gear, I might get a few 'jerks' until it frees up. Also engaging while hot (in traffic) can sometimes cause rapid 'jerks' which leads to stalling, the pedal engagement is all over the place and you really have to know how to drive the car, just to get it right.
Now I've bled the line about 4 times now in the last three years and it seems to improve slightly (maybe placebo effect), but I'm not looking into it maybe being the grease on the input shaft? I know we greased the throwout bearing and input shaft, but it was a very light coating since I was nervous about getting grease on a $2400 clutch.

It is difficult to explain (and google) but my 1.4 16V Golf 4 does this sometimes: while driving at a steady speed car jerks for a moment and revs drop quite much, a moment later it is fine. It feels like I had stepped on the brakes, but when I actually try that the revs won't drop as much. Like my engine seizes up for a fraction of a second but there is no noise. It has done that actually for 3 years, but it was really rare, about twice a year, but now I have had those jerks three days in a row.

VWVortex, so I've had some issues with my MK4 recently (go figure). It started with steering wheel getting intermittent and random jerks to the right after driving for about 20 minutes on the highway at any speed any gear but only at around 1/6 throttle. I needed to do front end maintenance anyway, so I replaced both complete LCA's with ECS Tuning's ply ones, went stage 2 BFI engine mounts, stage 2 BFI dogbone mount, both ball joints, both tie rods ends, both axles, and an alignment.
Now I'm getting a shimmy in the steering wheel starting at ~80mph. I know my wheels are slightly bent and are being replaced in the summer when the weather is warmer, but it wasn't doing this same shimmy prior to all this. Just the jerking. Could it be they messed up on the alignment? Its really getting on my nerves considering I've dumped a lot of money trying to fix this problem just to have something else pop up.
