So with just me in the car i get a clunk in the rear going over medium size cracks in the road. but with the wife and kids in the car the clunk is not as prevalent. VMR springs...
View 5 RepliesSo, I have a clunk that sounds like it's coming from the rear end, almost more of a knocking sound. It sounds to me like the driver's rear, but only hearing it in the driver's seat probably distorts my perception. The sound only occurs over bumps or uneven areas in the road. I've played with the end-links and they seem fine. I can't find anything visually obvious.

(avoiding big potholes of course). The suspension feels fine as in after the bump there is no continuous bouncing... Could my coils be going bad?
View 2 RepliesI have this front end rattle or clanking. It happens over bumps and cracks in the road. The rattle seems to be more on the passengers side to under the middle of the car. The stats of my Wagon - lowered on Bilstien Sports/H&R springs. All The control arms have been replaced back in 04 and maybe 40k miles ago. Drive axles were replaced once a long time ago, before it was lowered.
View 8 RepliesMy 02 F150 4x4 at times gets a shake through the steering when hitting road cracks, pothole fills, etc. Would installing a steering damper system work or am I missing something to check in the front end. Ball joints are good, all steering linkage good, new shocks all around, control arm bushings look good and don't seem to shift when prying with a bar. Also changed all sway bar bushings and links. Maybe the control arms just have to be changed with 103,000 miles on it even if they appear OK? What about using an aftermarket steering damper on a stock F150? My long gone 82 GMC 4x4 had one from factory but it was also a solid axle setup.
View 4 RepliesThe roads here in Maine this winter were especially awful with potholes and bumps. My '03 Ford Focus Wagon has recently developed a noise that I can't diagnose. The noise can be best described as a "rattle" from the front end when going over very small bumps/cracks in the road. It almost sounds like loose shocks. They are the original shocks and have 130k miles on them.
Big bumps are not a problem. Car does not bottom out, sway upon braking, or bounce when I put my weight on it and release. Several years ago I had a "creaking" from the front end and my mechanic replaced some bushings which fixed the problem. I originally thought this was the same, but it doesn't sound like that - worried it could be the struts but I want to diagnose it a little better before I bring it to a mechanic and just say that I have a front end noise...
I just got a new Golf TDI. I have about 500 miles on it so far. I recently went over a speed bump in the road and the car made an awful clunk sound sort of like the strut reached the end of its length reach. The car continued to make this klunk sound when I'd go over smaller bumps just not as loud. What this could be and how to remedy it?

I just replaced the shocks, that worked a little but didn't solve the problem. Now thinking rear sway bar end links? Anything I can check/inspect?
View 1 RepliesThis question is more for those with aftermarket pads (particularly Akebono pads), how much rattling noise do they make when doing over medium-sized irregularities in the road.
Every time my car goes over a bump it sounds like some bits and pieces of the front suspension will be left behind me. Frankly it sounds embarrassing. Unfortunately, two separate dealers have so far told me that the culprit is the aftermarket set of pads.
I have been getting some knocking the under most any loads . I do not have any codes. I tried premium gas and that did not make any difference. If this is not fixed what issues can this cause? What should I look for do get this fixed?
View 14 RepliesJust hit 225k with my 2004 Prius about a week ago. I passed inspection without replacing the (slightly) cracked rubber bushings for now, but what worries me is the cracks and a slight hole (it has not rusted completely through). Pictures attached. Should I do anything about this, and if so what?
Also, I've noticed that when I let go of the brake pedal, especially after a medium to the hard stop, I hear a squeaking... what's the cause for that? I know the front rotors have a bit of rust on the edges, but not sure if that's the cause... it seems to come from the back.
Other than that, the only other noise I've noticed is a slight clacking/tapping when the A/C is on, usually in hotter weather. The only thing I needed to pass inspection was to replace the muffler after a year and 1/2 ago, the last non-OEM part they put in at another shop was junk and rusted through pretty badly leaving a hole that was leaking. Ended up getting it replaced at the dealer with the OEM part this time...
Is there a way repair a small bumper crack myself?If yes, what are the steps and the products?

View 4 RepliesI'm currently at ~4300 mi, and I'm probably going to cash in on my free oil change at 5k and have the dealer do the radio software update to fix the 87.7 issue, and have them look into this as well.
Here's what happens. Get into the car after its been sitting long enough to completely cool down. Put it in Drive, take the brake off, and start driving. The first time you apply the brake, you hear a "clunk" from the rear axle, sometimes quiet, sometimes louder. After that it will not make the noise again until it has been sitting and cooled all the way down.
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is there's something messed up with one of the parking brake shoes.

View 24 RepliesI took the R in for a passenger side seat issue (recliner not working), and while I was there I had them look into a light knocking noise I was experiencing.
The noise would happen most noticeably at low speeds, over uneven road surfaces...but not over things like speed bumps. I checked under the car, checked the hatch, made sure the spare/tools were secure, and nothing worked.
VW figured out that the noise was coming from the lower rubber rear spring plate, part (1K0-512-297-D). Not sure if it was one side or both, but they replaced both.
All better now, no more noise! Just wanted to make a thread for those of you who like to hunt down and fix noises.
Got an odd clunk, feels like rear off throttle from hard acceleration. Feels like diff bushings might be worn. Looking for some info about diff bushings and how they feel. Also found the front prop shaft coupler looks like its seen much better days so ill be replacing that.
View 8 RepliesI replaced my rear brake pads this weekend. I used oem pads and used the shims with CRC lubricant. I also compressed the brake calipers and made room for the new pads. I also tried to take off one of the rotors but it would not come off even with putting screws in the rotor.
Everything seemed fine and brakes were strong but when I went for a test drove there is a clicking sound at low to medium speeds come from the rear passenger side. I checked the retainer pins and they are on correctly.
What the problem may be? I would like to spin the wheel but the parking brake is on. Is it okay to take off the parking brake while jacked up if I block the wheels??
My 2012 Elantra with 10,000 km sounded like the rear suspension was bottoming out with a loud clunk whenever I went over a bad bump or heave in the road. It was the right rear shock, which was replaced under warranty. The car handled well so it wasn't as if the damping had disappeared. About 500 km later the left rear shock had to be replaced under warranty as the loud clunking as if the suspension was bottoming out returned. I'm not sure of the shock manufacturer Hyundai is using, but they obviously had/have a quality control problem or the shocks just aren't up to the job. I live in the country and drive a lot of secondary roads, but have never had shocks go like this before. Something in the internal hydraulic value circuit is going wrong.

After about 10 minutes it quiets somewhat and sometimes is gone completely. I looked at the CV joint and the strut but they appear ok. Also checked sway bar and tightened all bolts.
View 3 RepliesMy wife and I bought a 2014 Elantra with 30,000 miles on it. This is our first Hyundai and the car runs great, but the only issue I have is that whenever I go over a large bump in the road, the front suspension clunks and feels like it's coming apart. Smaller bumps or imperfections in the road are okay and the car runs smoothly over those, but the larger bumps and potholes produce an unreassuring clunk.
We've never owned a Hyundai before and we really like the car, but I was wondering if this is normal for the Elantra and if others experience this. I brought the car to the dealer and they checked everything out. They said all was fine and that it was normal. Is it?
