Golf VI R :: Noise Due To Pavement Imperfections
Jul 27, 2016
My 20K R I now generating noises when transvering small pavement imperfections, like cracks filled with tar that are not there with my other cars. It is pretty noticeable almost vibrations through the body and wheel. Only mod I hav done that would effect that is the lower E34 dogbone. It feels like strut bushings, but hard to fathom that at 20K. It is like the rubber isolator from the wheels are gone.

I have owned a C for almost 8 months. Happy owner except for clanks that seem to come from front brakes when passing over bots dots or pavement imperfections. It has been that way since day 1.
I'm aware a TSB exists for Gen 3 Prius brakes but seems there is nothing for C nor any comment found in Priuschat from other C owners. I would wait the next scheduled maintenance unless it is a serious issue

The other day, as I got up to speed on the interstate on moderately wet asphalt, a harmonic vibration started at around 65mph. Felt it in the seat of my pants more than in the steering wheel...the entire chassis was vibrating. So bad that when I called a friend to ask him what he thought, he could hear the vibration in my voice. Clutch in, engaged, under power, under back pressure - nothing affected the pitch or harmonics. Below 65 changed the intensity, but had to slow to 50 to make it stop. Took it all the way to 90, but no difference. This kept up for the entire 70 mile trip.
Now for the weird part. On my way back, 2 hours later, the rain had stopped and the interstate was now dry. No vibration. Just as smooth as glass all the way home. I had it in for service recently, because it happened once before...no codes, no clue from tech as to what brought this on. And just to be sure, I had them balance the wheels...very minor weight adjustment. I called the dealer on the way back to tell them it happened again, and all the tech could suggest was to stop by next time it was raining so they could road test it.
Even more weird is the fact that this has only happened twice and I drive the interstate in the rain all the time.

Test drove a 2013 Touareg Sport V6, 52k mi. Great cosmetic condition, drove great. Pretty quiet on good roads, but there was quite a bit of road noise on coarse pavement. Here are some measurements from inside the car, windows up (using a sound meter on my phone, for relative measures at least)
Engine off: 25db
Car stopped, engine at idle: 40db
60mph on highway, smooth pavement: 65db (tolerable)
60mph on highway, coarse pavement: 75b (less tolerable)
The tires are 18" Michelin LTX, still appear to be serviceable, for all I know they're the original tires but at any rate, they seem to be considered to be quiet tires in general.
Granted the roads are pretty bad here (Portland, OR) and most cars struggle to some degree with it... but I'm wondering how characteristic this is of the 2013 Touareg, what the thoughts are on the significance of the tires, etc. Also wondering if upper level trims, or perhaps later model years, have more sound dampening; e.g. I noticed there was no sound dampening under the hood, which was kind of surprising.

I noticed a few days ago that when I back out of my driveway, or any time I go in reverse, when i turn, either direction, it feels lime my rear wheels are skidding across the pavement. Now I know that can't be happening because it hasn't always acted that way and it's just illogical. But what it could be, cv joint? Do I have any in the rear.

Upon noticing some squeaking noise when my car hits particularly rough pavement I asked my mechanic to take a look. He informed me that my front lower control arm bushings have shifted, the right one some, and the left just a hair. The car was involved in an accident some years back and about two years ago I ran it into a curb bad enough to shift my steering wheel about 10-15 degrees out of position.
According to the mechanic, it its not a bad problem currently, drivability is not at all affected, but it could be a potential issue in the future. However, because I just identified the problem, I don't know if it is recent or has been there all along for the last 5 years (just inherited the car from my dad a few months ago). For the moment, its wait and see if it gets any worse.
So I say, OK, whats it take to correct it, just for future reference. This is when I find out that the 02 Camry, for some insane reason, has control arm bushings that are not replaceable without replacing the entire control arm. And if that wasn't bad enough, the control arms cannot be removed without lifting or removing the engine AND transmission!?

I am on my third RX now with my 2014 RX350. Previous to this car I had a 2007 RX400H which I loved. I find this new car much noisier when on pavement than my RX400H. Noticed the interior noise on the 2014 to be quite loud. I compared to my wifes Mercedes ML350 also a 2014 too and it's much louder.

I noticed that my sunroof creaks slightly when going over rough pavement when closed. I can duplicate the noise by pushing up on the closed sunroof with my fist. It's not loud at all but with the radio off and at lower speeds I can hear it.

My 2012 Plug-in spontaneously started making a metal scraping/rattling noise in the middle of a low-speed drive around the neighborhood yesterday. Seems to be coming from the left front wheel area. I've checked thoroughly under the car and in the front wheel wells for anything that could be dragging/rubbing, and I can't find a culprit there.
It occurs while coasting in EV mode, so not ICE/exhaust related. The car doesn't pull to one side or the other. Only 9K miles, so I wouldn't suspect a hub bearing or any other significant wear to be causing this.
Possible clue or red herring: the dealer replaced the the left front tire and did an alignment two days ago, and the noise occurred within 15 miles of driving after that service.

Have just leased 2008 pasat 2.0l turbo. Great engine but suspension has loud rumbles /noise on uneven pavement. Have lowered tire pressure to 30 . suspension noise still persists. only have 1500 miles. dealer says that everything is still to factory spec.

2007 Touareg with 19",V6, with 10,700 miles
Problem: Noise or rattle in engine compartment, at low speed (less than 25miles/hour) on uneven pavement (not potholes). Can be replicated over and over.
The dealer acknowledge the noise and has tightened all suspension parts, greased all joints, replace front-right shock and bushings (for some reason the noise is more prevalent on Right side), put some sort of tool with sensors in different areas of the chassis to "hear" noise differences while driving to determine the culprit.
Description: To me, the noise sounds like there is something lose in either the engine compartment or the area where the wipers are located. Sort of like if there was something (plastic maybe) hitting the chassis (only at slow speeds - I cannot hear it when driving faster I guess because of engine and road noise). I have not been able to figure it out.
The noise was present only on another 2007 with 8K miles.

The front suspension of my R has been making a lot of racket lately. Every small pavement imperfection creates a dull thud or thump. Could it be my strut mounts? They are about 3 years old — I replaced them when I installed Koni FSD under stock springs. I have a vague recollection that the distance between the top of the shock tower and the underside of the metal strut "hat" should be no more than 10mm... I have about a 12mm gap. Does that mean anything?

Since Ive got my 2010 Tiguan 2.0 TSI, I hear a creaking noise coming from the front right suspension when riding over uneven pavement. The dealer said it is a common known problem from many Tiguans caused by the engine mount and that VW recommends the change of that part.
The new engine mount is slightly different from the one that is installed in my car. I am still waiting for the part to arrive and to be changed. Meanwhile, I spoke with another 2010 Tiguan owner, here in Brazil, whose car has already received the new part.
He said that the creaking noise has gone but now he feels more vibration coming from the engine and a kind of "diesel-engine-sound" when accelerating... Location of the engine mount: [URL] ....
The "old" engine mount bears the code:
5N0 199 262 G
5AY CN
M086
09/03/27
[URL] ....
The "new" engine mount bears the code:
5N0 199 262 E
5AY CN
M082
09/03/10
[URL] ....
I assume that the first number is the part number, the last is the manufacturing date and the others are either car model or manufacturer code or anything else. Note that the part number is the same, except by the letter suffix: "G" in the "old" one and "E" in the "new" part. Well, the suffix designation does not make sense for an evolutionary design...
My questions are:
1) Is it a new design or is it a roll back to an older part that does not cause that problem although it was probably modified due to another issue?
2) Is this part number specific for 2.0 TSI engine or is it the same for other engines (petrol/diesel)?
3) Which engine mount have you got on your cars?

I'm the proud owner of a 2008 RX350 with low mileage (40,000 miles - US model). I purchased it a year ago and I haven't had any mechanical problems. However it's been 3 months that I have this rattle from the rear, especially when driving over uneven pavement.
I had the vehicle checked by a local mechanic but he couldn't find any loose part at the exception of the spare tire plastic cover underneath that looked a bit flimsy but he couldn't tell for sure... I even did an oil change at a Lexus dealership and they didn't find anything when they hoisted the car but they didn't look hard either....
I've disconnected the tonneau cover and put the release latches, for the tonneau, in the lock position (towards the front of the vehicle). That didn't solve the problem. Lastly I removed my plate cover and still didn't resolve it.
Anyway, the rattle seems to come from somewhere underneath, around the trunk area and is loud when you hit bump or drive on uneven road and it's driving me crazy!

Noticed the lights jittery or bouncy when you go over bumps or imperfections on the roads. This cannot be right?

So, fresh off the new brake actuator pump and new hybrid battery and a nice four hour drive yesterday and today i went over a small bump and started to get a loud clunk/rattle coming from the driver's side front wheel area.
It got worse as I drove home and even rattles going straight on a fairly flat road when i hit only minor imperfections. It sounds like something is loose. I cannot reproduce any noise bouncing the car or rocking it side to side.
Prior to this I would get a squeak/groan from the driver's side when I would go over speed bumps and similar large dips or rises, but that has been curiously quiet for awhile.

2006 Azera Limited; 221k miles
I'm a new owner of an old Azera. It's become apparent I'll soon be busting my knuckles ferreting out suspension noises. I gather from perusing various forums that suspension noise is a common complaint with the Azera.
In my particular case, the car makes two distinct noises which seem to come from front right corner. I here "clicking" when driven over minor road imperfections, and "scrunching" when driven over speed bumps. It's likely two (or more) disparate parts have failed.
I noticed significant cracks in both sides of the bushing located where the shock absorber mounting fork (54682-3K000) bolts to the lower control arm (54501-3L000). I'll replace this bushing then determine if doing so remedies the clicking noise at this corner. If replacing this bushing fixes the "clicking" noise, I'll replace its counterpart at the other corner, then move on to identify the scrunching sound.
My problem is, I cannot find a part number for this bushing! ...nor can I find a procedure to replace it. I presume it's just a matter of digging out the old bushing and press-fitting (with soap) the new bushing in its place. Surprisingly, the service manual (first edition) does provide any guidance.
I need the part number for this bushing and tips/tricks for installing it into the lower control arm.

I have a 2006 santa fe V6 front wheel drive,,,lately the abs goes on even on dry pavement...and the brake pedal got softer...no light on dash is on...brakes and master all good ...no leaks...i was told it can be the front drive shafts and the rings at the end for the abs?? change those rings or the front axles and it will fixed.

I'm new to the VW world so I'm not entirely sure what this noise can be. That car seems to shake more than it normally would when going over uneven pavement, such as dips and holes. It also makes a terrible clanging noise. Now I know this model is renown for needing engine mount replacements...but it feels like it's the suspension.

Whenever I am on wet pavement, and even on a slight incline, my Honda Element shudders a bit before grabbing the pavement. I have the original tires that came with the - used - car, which I bought three years ago. It's not a big problem, but is a slight irritant. Is it a problem with the tires or something more serious?

I have a 2012 Tig S. I hear a rattle coming from under dash by steering wheel. It happens over rough pavement. Had it at the dealer, they replaced the sway bar linkage. The noise is still there. Service rep. says its normal. I drove another new Tig and it felt tight. I only have 12000 miles on it. Really like my Tig.
