Golf VI R :: Howl Noise Emanating From Rear When Keeping Speed?
Mar 13, 2013
Currently doing a road trip in my R and I've noticed after a considerable amount of time on the road, there's a howl noise emanating from the rear when keeping speed. Goes away under light acceleration. I can even hear it over the radio. After resting the car and me (12 hrs) I get back on the road and after a couple of hours the howl comes back. Is it the rear diff? I don't think it's wheel bearings. Tires have a different noise. 2013 R w/ 4000 miles. Or is it just what happens when you drive for hours on end?

Need to replace at least one rear wheel bearing, but still not positive which side. Getting a whump whump whump and slight howl at speed that seems to be worse going around right turns, so will change the drivers side first.

I hear a whistling noise that seems to be emanating from my right side mirror when I start driving at highway speeds (I guess, since I'm not near enough to pinpoint it).

I have a 2002 Explorer. Front right howls. Local shop put new tires on, said wheel bearings are good, it Starts to howl at about 10 mph & keeps howling up to hi-way speed. While driving 55 cornering makes steering wheel vibrate a little, then straight it just howls. I have put on over 15,000 miles while this noise is happening. now seems to be getting worse...

So I have a 2015 SE DSG. I'm getting the irritating popping noise, at no particular speed, coming from what sounds to be the middle/rear. It is lowered on H&R coilover, which I have checked over and over again to make sure everything is tight. It started about 500 miles ago, and the Coilovers have been on for about 6000 miles, the car just hit 7000 miles.

I searched and found a couple of threads with regards to a vibration or howl at the rear of some of the V6 Touaregs. Starts around 55MPH and continues up to 70 (fast as I've gone since this started). Not so much a vibration as a low pitched, but loud, howl.
Wife and kids noticed it as well. First time, since its winter, I thought perhaps snow or ice in the wheel well or a buildup on the rim was causing an imbalance. Not the case.
Wheel bearing? Car goes in for service next week, but I have a feeling that if I can't get it narrowed down dealer will tell me everything is okay.

My '04 4wd has a pretty loud rear end howl, it is a LS but don't think it's an LS problem, no noises or chattering when turning. Howling is loudest at 50 to 60, but some noise at all speeds. I don't mind tearing into the rear myself, but not sure if I could tell what was wrong just by looking, i suppose bad bearing might be obvious, but not sure how to diagnose gear lash tolerances. It only has 107000 mi. and is an 8.8 rear I believe.

My 4WD light does not come on but the warning light to service it does which leads me to believe the 2WD is not engaged. I have a 2001 Chevy Blazer. Also the seems to be a "rubbing" noise emanating from the right from while driving.

Today after driving in traffic for 20 mins followed by 100 for about 5 minutes I took my exit ramp and came to a light. My car started emanating smoke from the sides and back. The smoke is a classic VW smell of plastic. I sat at the light for about a minute while smoke was sporadically coming out. The light turned green and I pulled over to check this out. I can certainty smell it in my bay, interior and all around the outside of my car. My oil level is fine and the fuses on the battery are fine. The (not so accurate) temp gauge was right in the middle.

I have a 1996 Subaru Outback. There is a strange noise emanating from the center/front of the car. It only occurs when I stop accelerating over the speed of 50 mph. It sounds like a combination of a marble rolling around in a coffee can and a baby rattle. No sound at lower speeds or when I accelerate.

Just got a 2012 GTI and I've started experiencing Geiger counter-like sounds emanating from the left side dash. It's audible over the radio, but still faint enough. Sometimes continue for an entire ride or goes away for a while. It's the only interior noise that has remained a constant.

I have a 2003 Honda Civic Si with a clicking noise that appears to be emanating from the front passenger side. It appears to be "rotational" in nature. This noise is very similar to that one might hear when a CV joint is going out but it's heard when going forward. My mechanic (whom I trust) has been unable to fix this problem. Over the course of approximately 4 months they've:
1. Repacked the wheel bearings on both front wheels.
2. Replaced the strut mount
3. Replaced the carrier bearing with a used one.
4. Verified that all brakes are tight and working properly, and 5. Replaced the axle 4 times with both new and rebuilt versions.
Some things I've noticed:
1. The noise might not appear until the car is warmed up a bit, that is, driven 10 to 20 miles
2. It goes away when I apply the brakes but comes back immediately.
3. It occurs even when the engine is turned off and I'm coasting down a slight slope. My mechanic is unsure how to proceed and the noise is driving me crazy.

My honda accord is an 05 model, and ever since my mother passed it down to me a year ago, EVERYTHING has been breaking. As of a week ago, any time I turn on the ac, the car shudders violently. It first started when I was parked with the engine on for about an hour, and a low screeching noise along with a smell like burning rubber started emanating from the engine. The noise stopped whenever I turn off the ac, and now it shudders when I turn it on.
Along with that, for the last several months before it completely screwed up, the air being pumped out of the left side of the vehicle was noticeably warmer then the right side. And lastly, starting today, the back center light is fine, but the brake lights don't turn on when I hit the brakes but do turn on when I turn on the headlights. What is going on?

I have 07 standard wagon, what is happening is when releasing the clutch to start movement it a times makes a howl/wine noise. This will occur most times when car has a loaded or starting on a hill.
The dealer can not tell me what it is for sure, this dealer has a good reputation and I have good luck with. He said that he does not have another car to compare it with, because manuals are not common.
Looking for pictures of the clutch area?

I just took delivery of a 2015 pewter gray base azera. It is my second one as I purchased a leftover 2013 last year. The sonatas had to go just not comfortable enough for me. Between 1000-1500 rpm whether in motion or in park I get a sound like an owl hooting. my 2013 does not do it.i can make it do it any time I want. This is really annoying in traffic it actually can be heard with the radio on. the dealer said it is normal and let me drive another new one on a test drive and it does it too. Almost sounds like it could be a harmonic noise in the intake or exhaust. Going to see if I can pinpoint it this weekend. I am very disappointed as my 2013 has 36k on it and other than the rattle at start up no issues.

I've got sort of a howl going on, was thinking rear end, but when i jacked up the wheels and spun the driveshaft the noise seemed to come from the transfer case area. I haven't had a chance to check the fluid yet, could it be a bearing in the t-case? Its only when i'm on the gas if i let off its gone. 2001 f150 super crew 4x4

2002 Screw 4X4 with 5.4 ... Truck has 180K miles.
Howl / Growl noise we think from the front. Both front wheel bearings have been changed without improvement. A rotational issue as it only does it when moving and still does it if you put it in neutral and let it coast.
2 WD or 4 WD does not seem to make much difference. Been checking and testing everything without success. Drive shafts and u-joints are tight etc.
How to test it? It was my truck and is my son's truck now. They have run it on a hoist and tried to determine where the sound comes from. Going to try that again but it might be different when the wheels are not on the ground and there is no weight on things.

Tried to do some searching regarding this and info was pretty thin. When I'm up at highway speeds there is an obnoxious howl transmitting through the steering wheel. On occasion it will go away but it's generally there. There is some vibration coming through and it's driving me absolutely nuts - it almost makes the car feel overweight and sluggish, but that may just be in my head.
I had 4 new tires put on and an alignment done around 3 weeks ago, so it shouldn't be related to that. I was told that my right rear Aristo has a slight bend in it, but would that cause such a harsh reaction? I was thinking wheel bearings but I really don't know how to check for that.

I just changed u-joints and the carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft. I now have a "howl" somewhere back there. The noise starts around 30mph and goes away around 40mph. There no vibration associated with it. The sound goes away after driving for 15-20 minutes.
I double check all my marks on the driveshaft to make sure I put it in the way it came out. I put it up on jack stands and ran it up to speed but couldn't replicate the sound that way.
The truck is a 2002 F350 7.3ltr DRW.....

Problem is noise that you can describe as clunk, not any harsh or sharp sound. It appears on road bumps or unevenness during slow speed up to about 40kph/25mph. The noise has not been heard over that speed even in bad bumpy roads.
List of thing I've done so far:
- Driven with empty rear compartments
- Driven with open rear door
- Checked the tightness of spare tyre
- Replaced rear stabilizer bar linkages
- Replaced rear stabilizer bar bushings
- Replaced rear axle carrier knuckle bushings
Could it be possible not coming from rear? Should I sit in the cargo space while somebody else driving, any success with this? What to do next?
