So not having the car for more then a week one tank of gas. I was driving yesterday and as i went to go into 5th it grind. Not sure whats going on but at regular shifting it grinds if i wait till the rams drop it goes in fine.

i thought it might be a bad synchro. It only does it when warmed up and on downshifts. I can let the rpms drop all the way down before shifting and it will grind. rev matching i think still grinds. wont do it cold.
I have been experiencing some grinding when I go from 2nd to 3rd, so the first thing that i did was to replace my trans oil but it did nothing so I went to my mechanic and he said that I need to replace the gear synchronizer. What is the part number and the real name, what i need is what is in the picture below.
My car is a mk4 1.8T with 5 gears....
when i shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear, above 2500 rpms i get a really bad grinding, i am just under 50,000 miles so it is going to the dealership to get fix. It also kicks me out of second gear some time.
View 24 RepliesAll of a sudden, my car doesn't like to stay in first gear? I tried to put it into first gear and it wouldn't stay there, it made a grinding noise when I tried to go. So, if I want to start going, I literally have to hold it there to keep it in first gear.
View 16 RepliesJust recently, my car 6 speed has started acting up and it's got me worried. First, and most notably, when I go to shift into 4th gear, there is a slight grinding noise and its a little tough to shift into 4th. Once it is in 4th gear, though, it shifts and drives fine with no other grinding noise. A buddy of mine says it might be the synchros, but what that means or how I can fix it.
Also, it has been having a rough idle on startup for a while now. It will idle at around 1,200 RPMs for a bit when I start it up, and it will kind of backfire out the exhaust a bit, kind of like it's a misfiring coilpack or something, but will usually go away after I drive for a bit.
Driving my car right now isn't very fun when I am only worrying about what's wrong with it, so I really want to get it fixed sooner rather than later, before these develop into larger problems.
MK7 with 15k miles... This morning on my commute into work, I started having some clutch issues. When I would try to go into 2nd gear from 1st at any speed, it would grind when I would let out the clutch pedal. It was like it didn't fully engage and if I pushed the pedal back in and tried to get it in 2nd, it would grind. All other gears were fine. I don't drive the car hard so I don't think I torched the clutch.
Synchros? Shift Alignment if these models have that? Pressure Plate?
Have a question when I shift slow from 2nd to 3rd my o2j tranny doesn't grind but when I shift fast from 2nd to 3rd it grinds it happens starting at 3000 Rpms thru 6000 Rpms. It also doesn't happen when I shift from 4th to 3rd. Have performed a tranny fluid change. Along with replacing the clutch at 1500 miles ago. The engine is AWP.

View 5 RepliesI have a 2005 5 speed manual elantra that I let my wife drive it home when I drove another vehicle and the next day when I went to drive it it started grinding going into second gear. What can be causing this? The clutch works great on the other gears.
View 1 RepliesSo I am pretty sure its my clutch that is the problem, here's what happens: When I go into second gear, it doesn't really grind.. but its tough to get it into gear and its only with second gear. sometimes it will go right in and others i have to double clutch. when i double clutch it goes in smooth every time. now I don't think it would be syncros because I am pretty sure if it was that it would do it every time I shift? It only does it while its cold or hasn't been drove in awhile.. but after i drive it around its fine so I am pretty sure its the clutch. Second thing, what is an upgraded clutch that is good for these 6 speed transmissions?
View 2 RepliesI just put a stage 1 clutch in my 20th anniversary. When i was taking the transmission out, i dropped the hydraulic clutch line and all of the fluid spilled out. I got the whole thing done, and bled the clutch line and topped off the reservoir. I started the car and the clutch pedal had, what felt like the right amount of pressure. More than the stock, but not significantly. When i went to put it in gear, its like there is no clutch, just grinding and it doesn't go in to anywhere. I can cycle through the gears with the car off and like i said, the clutch has the right pressure and everything.
View 10 RepliesI have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2l 5 speed. 3rd and 5th gears are grinding as i enter the gear. It happens when i am up shifting sometimes, but more often happens when down shifting. im not sure if i have a clutch issue or if i need to replace the transmission. I recently replace the clutch slave cylinder/throw out bearing. at the same time i flushed the fluid. How do i start to diagnose the problem?
View 7 RepliesMy 88 celica's manual transmission grinds a little, at times, when going in 3rd gear. I have atf fluid in it now as specified in the manual. Should I replace it with gear oil?
I don't want to damage the transmission or clutch.
Buying a vr4 this weekend with dr650 turbos... The only problem with car is when you shift into reverse it grinds and won't go into gear, I'm thinking its the reverse synchro?

View 8 RepliesI have a 98 saab 900 se turbo.90000 miles on it. Just had a new clutch kit/throwout bearing and master cylinder clutch installed, as the clutch was going bad.
When I shift the car (while driving) from 2nd into 3rd/4th/5th gear,and accelerate I suddenly notice what sounds like a "grinding"/raspy noise that stays with the car while in those gears. It does not occur in 1st or 2nd , although it seems that in first gear the rpms go up real fast now (could the gears be slipping again?? this is a brand new clutch..).
The second I shift to 3rd gear and give it gas, the noise shows up instantly. Now when I let my foot off the gas, the noise goes away 100%. The second I give it gas again, it comes back. Also I don't believe the noise increases or decreases in relation to the speed of the vehicle. It seems to stay constant no matter what speed I'm at, as long as I'm actively giving it gas.
It occurs every time I drive..not sure what to do and what causes this..maybe I just need to check the transmission fluid?
Why my car is grinding gear when I shift from 1st to 2nd, & yes the clutch is fully depleted and still grinds when I shift.
View 4 Repliesso I bought my gli about a month ago assuming it needed a clutch (got it for a steal so wasn't worried about it) the kid I bought it from didn't really know much about the issue but it was a constant grinding when in gear and moving but the second you engage the clutch it would stop, and quiet down completely, so I dropped the trans and inspected clutch, throw out bearing, & fly wheel it all looked new.
So than my second guess was it was something internally in the transmission so I sent it out to be inspected and repaired as needed. I got a call from the shop today that said everything was perfect so I am completely stumped as to what my problem is. I have a new clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, all new linkage, & am changing fluid. I don't know what else it could be and really don't wanna have to drop the trans again once its back together.
I have a f1ta 5 speed trans on my 4.9 and when i press the clutch in and shift into 1st gear it makes a grinding noise then goes into gear after a little patience. but if i press the clutch and wait a few seconds, then shift into 1st its fine and goes right in.... maybe syncronizers not meshing or they're worn? or could it possibly be a low fluid prob? idk, it just started happening.
View 3 RepliesI am having several issues. I got the lexus dealership to service my transmission recently. I got it back with a weird smell. It smells like body odor. I had to reach out to hendrick corporate for them to address the problem without charging me. Turns out it was the fluid they used. I could smell the smell from inside if i wasn't recirculating the air. They changed the fluid again and it still smells. Is my transmission doing this because it is too hot?
This smell was never an issue until after the first transmission service. And now I'm hearing a metal grinding sound in 2nd gear past 4600 rpm. It still shifts smooth but 2nd gear might be slipping. Something just doesn't seem right. o yea they gave me my car back with my brakes sticking after stopping in traffic. I took it back and was told my brake pads in the rear lost 2mm in less than 650 miles.
By the way this sound can be heard in 1st but is more prevalent in 2nd. It is not heard in any other gears. And when in sport mode the sound instantly stops when i shift up into 3rd.
