About a month ago I noticed the coolant level looked a little low. I attributed it to the fact that the engine was warm after driving. Tonight the coolant light illuminated and the mfd states the level is low. Sure enough it's quite low.Is this normal for the R? I know my MK5 GTI burned oil like crazy. Should I be concerned?
View 2 RepliesJust did an oil change on the R32 and while the oil level looks fine (if anything a little high at the moment) we can't get the oil level warning icon to stop blinking on. I don't get it. We have level up to where the manual says it should be but the icon will not stop blinking on and off.
View 1 RepliesMy coolant level keeps dropping really low underhood and the light comes on on the dash, but I went and bought coolant, opened the hood, and the level was back to normal. Where is it all going? Should I add any when it's low if it's coming back? This just seems weird.
View 11 RepliesI've got some problems going on with my 2001 VR6 Jetta. I was driving home from my way to work this evening and all of a sudden the indicator light came on and told me to stop and check the coolant level. Within about three minutes the car was already up to about 200. I pulled over to a gas station and the coolant reservoir was completely empty. So I began to pour coolant in the reservoir and fill it up I notice I was pouring a lot of coolant so I went to the hood looked on the driver side below the bumper and water/cool was pouring out everywhere. I inspected as many radiator hoses as I could and did not find any cracks. The water seem to be pouring out from around the thermostat housing. My question would be since I don't know whole lot about cars would they crack thermostat housing because you need to have this problem?
View 24 RepliesSo I recently bought a Chevy Impala with about 150,000 miles on it. The check engine light is on and sometimes it will tell me my coolant levels are low. I filled it up with coolant and the message still comes on sometimes. Also, when I'm driving, I can feel my rpms go way up when I press the gas, but they car won't accelerate for shit. Sometimes the check engine light will blink, which I've heard is for safety, and my car will barely accelerate at all. I can drive it around town easily the way it is now, but I don't want to risk ruining it. On top of that, my radio and lights will cut in and out sometimes and get better the more gas I give it.

View 3 RepliesAt the end of last winter, I got the warning flash that my coolant level was low. So I topped up (about a pint or more)About 3 weeks later I had to go through the same scenario !! but then it started to get hot outside and my air conditioner mode took over and lo and behold - no more coolant loss.!!?? Now that winter and cold weather is back - so is my leak!!
So I run off to the local dealer and they get the car up. And drop the belly pan with the engine running and the heat cranked up. the mechanic said he found a dripping hose coming from UNDER the intake manifold.
The engine is a 2002 2.8 v6....
My friend bartered for a '99 F250, 2wd/auto, 4 door, 7.3, 258k miles.
It had reportedly sat for one year, though the expired registration sticker and other things point to it sitting for two.
It ran low on oil, sputtered and died. Oil in the degas tank. Filled to oil to mid way on the hatch marks on the dip stick.
I drove it 25 miles to my house, and the oil level is not reading on the dip stick.
The sludgy fluid level in the degas tank is unchanged. Where is the fluid going?
I will refill the oil to see just how much it lost in the 25 miles if it important to someone, but I prefer to not waste the oil.
My first plan is to remove, inspect and replace the oil cooler o-rings. Even though the dealership charged him for this, I don't trust that they did it right. I think it is the easiest and mostly likely place for oil getting into the coolant.
It does have a really long crank before there is enough low pressure oil for it to start. At the moment I think this is a separate issue.
The dealership also charged him for a replacement injector. No idea if they replaced the cup or not.
When I start up the car in the morning, the infamous "STOP!! CHECK COOLANT LEVEL" warning will come on, and then shortly thereafter it will go away. I topped off the coolant level (with the pink stuff of course) and yet this light will come on occasionally. It mostly comes on first thing in the morning when the car is started up and cold, and *sometimes* come on when the car is warm. Fluid level is all topped off. What gives?
I was reading that there is a fluid level sensor that sometimes goes bad? could this be it? I changed the coolant temp sensor back in the summer of this year. (not sure if that has anything to do with it?) Not sure if I have a leak, cause I look under the car in the morning and I have no spots of coolant anywhere.
While driving my 04 w12 a few months ago i noticed a "stutter" or brief jerk while driving. the next morning i had a "coolant level" warning. i took the car to a mechanic i use who diagnosed the problem as a broken coolant line involving the transmission cooler, with the result that coolant migrated to the atf. indication was that the tranny was toast, along with the atf cooler. I authorized a repair (not inexpensive), keeping costs down by installing a used tranny. since the car was "fixed" i still got a "jerk" usually in fourth gear, sometimes in third. i took the car back and was told that the tranny was flushed numerous times and the transmission was reflashed. i picked the car up yesterday, but i still get the "jerks", now usually in third gear.
View 3 RepliesOn Sunday I'm driving to the store my LOW COOLANT light goes on. So I buy some coolant. I get home let the car cool off and check my radiator, it is full. My coolant recovery tank is also at the proper level.
Been three days already checked levels again and I'm not losing any coolant.
What the car is NOT doing:
1. Not losing fluid
2. Not running hot

few weeks ago i had a coolant light go off and said stop stop flashed and then check manual lights. Keep in mind i do live in socal, were weather is not bad and the time i started this was not colder then normal times, i then parked went on with my day came back and it was fine no warning. This morning i had another light and warning come up (warmer then before) i dont know if it really is low or problem with the ecu? i checked the coolant an it is fine?
View 7 RepliesHad my low coolant warning light and message come on while driving home from work. My car is 1 year old with 30k on it, motor is hot right now and coolant is a good bit below the minimum line (will post a pic soon). I do my service intervals at 7500 miles at most and regularly keep an eye on my oil and coolant levels.
I just checked the coolant last week after an oil change and noticed it was at the bottom minimum line, it's fairly below that now. Does this call for a ride to the dealership? I've seen where people have had pumps/hoses replaced already due to leaks. Nothing on the ground from what I can tell and nothing seems to be leaking under the hood.

Sometimes when I start up my car ( I want to say when cold, but I haven't tried after its warm yet), the coolant light and warning come up. I obviously checked the coolant, and it is a little low. But it's been where it is since I bought the car, and I haven't noticed any leaks. After I turn the car off then on again the light goes away.
The car is running perfectly fine, it's not running hot or cold. Another thing I have noticed is that my fans don't seem to be working. ( I know it's a common problem). But I'm thinking this could be the fact that it's below 0 today.
I haven't gotten it scanned yet, but what's going on; i.e., Thermostat, sensors, fans etc..
After about an hour of driving, the coolant temperature light on my 2010 GTI started blinking. The gauge never showed a temperature higher than the usual 190, including traffic and idling. Having reached my destination, I shut the car off and then back on, happy to see no warning lights at all. One dinner and some three hours later, I started back for home. 20 minutes into the drive, the car sounded three tones and the blinking light came on again.
Like before, the car drove without incident for the rest of the drive, and the light was no longer present once the car had been shut off and then on again. The owner's manual said that the coolant level might be too low, or the temperature too high, but neither of these seem to be the case. The car is equipped with GIAC stage I software and an Audi S3 intercooler.
Before I go buy a Bentley manual to dig around, when should my radiator fans kick on. I had the car idling for 10 minutes, no ac or heat on, and my coolant warning light came on, it overheated. It already has a new fan switch in the radiator, and the fuses are good.

View 6 RepliesI just bought a 2000 GTI with the 1.8 turbo. It was very affordable, but it had a few problems. On hard rides, the check engine light was blinking AND I think there was too much oil in the crankcase (I say "think" because the dipstick funnel is gone and I'm not sure how far down the dipstick should go -- new one is on order).
I got rid of the extra oil, and now if I keep the oil in the hatched area of the dipstick (with the dipstick pushed down as far as it goes), the check engine light will never blink even under hard driving. But with the oil that low, the oil light will flash and beep on hard turns. I was experimenting, adding a little oil at a time, and hoping to find the magical sweet spot where neither the check engine light nor the oil light would go off. Instead, tonight I found the opposite -- the sour spot where BOTH of them go off.
So now I'm thinking maybe I need to change to a thicker oil. This car has 124,000 miles on it and was recently refilled with 0w-40. On my last car (a 1994 Golf with the 2.0 liter and 140,000 miles), the oil light would beep on hot days. I solved that permanently by changing from 0w-40 to Mobil 1 15w-50.
Finally, I checked the codes and it said there was a misfire in #2 cylinder as well as general misfiring So I checked the plugs and discovered that the previous idiot had gapped the #2 plug at 1/8 inch! So I (the present idiot) regapped them all and the engine seems to run better, but maybe going for months with such a huge gap has already fried the #2 coil. Should I just replace it? (or all of them?)
Level in the tank going down? I don't appear to have any leaks but it's now down to the "Min" level cold.
View 9 RepliesMy Touareg has 9400 miles and yesterday I checked the coolant level when cold. Inside the reservoir there is an awkward yellow cylinder with the max and low words. The manual is not very detailed about where the level should be like the oil, or at least show a picture. I noticed that my coolant is right underneath the letters LOW for the low mark. I would take it that I need to add, but need to confirm whether or not that is an OK level. Could LOW be the translation by the Germans for the cold mark? My American made GMC Envoy has a clear reservoir with precise max-cold-low marks so you can actually safely see the level even when hot and be sure about it. I ask this because today I had the 10000miles service done and the tech said the level is fine.
View 8 Replies95 caprice 4.3L V8 150,000 miles. I smell coolant every time i drive the car (everyday). Drives fine, doesn't overheat. Smell is not inside the car but when I get out and stronger as I walk towards front of vehicle or stick my nose to the grill. Low coolant light came on about 2,000 miles ago. i filled to proper level in the coolant tank and since then only has lost an inch or so. no leaks on the ground but distinct coolant smell every time. Anything to worry about?
