Golf V R32 :: Whirling Sound From The Engine Bay
Jun 2, 2011
About three weeks prior to leaving for Helen, GA I began to notice a whirling sound from the engine bay. I could tell it was the radiator fan, but it wasn't very loud and just figured the engine was really warm. So I left it and it went away till a few days later it came back and then stayed pretty regular, again not much louder than usual but had a slightly different sound. Three days before we leave for SoWo it turns into a monster. It sounded 10x louder, so I immediately called the dealership to find out how much a radiator fan would be and if they had it in stock. The larger of the two fans is about $380 and the smaller is about $320 or so [yes, we have two radiator fans if you haven't checked]. This doesn't even include labor. So I asked if they have it in stock, and of course they wouldn't know until they look at the fan to see which brand it is. I decided to leave it for the trip, with anticipation of driving with a group of friends and having my AAA card in my wallet [which is now gone, forever ].
Thursday, early morning [@3am] I was packing up the car for our trip to SoWo, I turned it on while I finished loading the roof rack to get the car nice and cozy temperature wise inside. It started off the 'normal loud' I had been experiencing the last couple of days, then it grew into some ungodly sound akin to a turbo prop plane building up thrust for take-off. We trudged on, hoped for the best and secretly expected the worst. I kept an eye on the engine temps, but ran into no issues. The sound abated and persisted till I made a run on ToD Friday afternoon. The sound stopped, and the car performed like a champ all weekend, and drove all 1700 miles without incident or real concern.
I felt relieved. The problem fixed itself!
That is till today, the sound faintly came back this morning
Here is what I know so far about the issue.
The noise is coming from the larger of the two radiator fans. There is no CEL but there are codes in the computer which indicate low rpms [possible obstruction] of the fan. I did a visual check, but could not find any issues. I cleared to codes with the thought that maybe this was a fluke but after clearing the code, it came back later that day when I got home from work.

My wife's 2006 Prius is having some problems. The car has 187,000 miles on it. When the engine starts it makes a continuous whirling or humming sound. WHen I try to drive it has minimal power and can not be driven above 15-20 mph on my street. I bought an inexpensive Actron code reader and got the following codes. P0A92 P0300 P0303 P0304 P3191. Does it sound like a definite transmission problem and those other codes are caused by the transmission problem.

so yesterday I got out of my car with the engine still running and walked about 3 feet infront of it to open a garage door. All of a sudden a loud whining noise could be heard over the engine. I opened up the hood and could hear that it was coming from the passenger side. I then turned off the car and back on, it was still there, just very subdued, could barely hear it.
Later that day, after I had turned off my engine and all of a sudden, it was a loud whining again that lasted for about 4 seconds and it died away. Quite worried about it being the water pump.
Started my car today, sound hasn't returned and can't replicate it. Going to take it to the dealer tomorrow?

How is the turbo in this new design cooled? Sometimes when I restart a hot engine, there is a high pitched whirling sound before I take off. Is this the turbo in action? Are there active shutters in this car? Twin Power Turbo 2011 BMW 535i....

I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu ,I have noticed a whirling sound coming from my steering wheel whenever I am turning. I am wondering what could be the cause and should I get it checked out.

A little less than a month ago my wife's old 1999 Mustang had the tires replaced. Since that time there she has noticed two new sounds:The first is whirling/grinding sound coming from the front right wheel that comes and goes. The second is a low, loud groan that seems to come from the front of the vehicle when the brakes are applied. The groan varies in intensity but seems to always be present when the brakes are applied. The groan is not unfamiliar to anyone that's driven an older car, but it is much louder than I have ever seen on any other car (on the other hand I usually drive a Corolla so it may be normal on a V6 Mustang ).
The first sound seems to have been reduced but not eliminated since I followed the advice in this video below and pushed the plate behind the wheel back a bit with a screwdriver. Now it is only audible when the engine is off and the wheel is spun (in other words, when it is sitting on a jack and the wheel is spun by hand), but it is still there.
I took it into the shop where the tires were purchased and mounted. The good people at the shop did rotate and balance them, but both noises remain.
I looked at the calipers and discs and everything seems in order except (possibly) two things. The discs have rust around the edges not unlike the ones in this photo below and I have no clue if that is normal or a problem. The rust is present on all wheels and only the one makes that noise, so I think that may not be the source of the sound,. On the calipers some substance (paint?) is peeling off, but otherwise they look fine and again the same is true on all the wheels so it seems that is unrelated to the noise. I have not been able to get a look at the pad, so I don't know what condition they are in.
Other information: The serpentine belt was replaced a few days after the new tires were installed. The radiator was flushed at the same as the belt was changed. They also threw in an oil change and all the fluids checked at the same time. The tires are new Michelin Defender size 205 /65 R15 and all 4 tires are new. The engine is a V6 and the transmission is automatic.

My wifes 2006 mountaineer V8 overheats. She says itll only do it sometimes after the truck has been warmed up. She will come top a stop and the temp will spike and she will get a warning light then it will go back to normal and be fine. When the temp spikes she hears a loud whooshing or whirling sound coming from the motor which I supposed is the fan? Could it be a bad thermostat or waterpump?

My girlfriend has a 2001 Ford Escape 3L, 6cyl. When accelerating there is a loud high pitch whistle/whirling sound. The sound varies with the amount of throttle you give it. More throttle = louder whine. Doesn't seem to do it when idling or coasting. What that could be? I'm about to remove the belt and take a look at the drive belt tensioner and other pulleys.
Just checked pulleys and tensioner and the tensioner seems fine, a/c pulley spins smooth and free no play, alternator spins smooth no play. The belt needs to be replaced. I wouldn't think this would cause such a load whistle under acceleration. I would expect it to do it all the time if it was the belt. I'm looking at the water pump pulley and belt too and they seem ok as well.

My car recently started making strange noises sometimes. Sometimes I hear a whirling sounds coming from the bottom half of the block which I'd hope it isn't the water pump. Also when i start my car and it cranks over, I hear what sounds like a blow off sounds but its not from my diverter valve.

So today I got to 800+ miles and when I'm coasting in gear... When I get it to the point (by the gas pedal) where the transmission is not loaded so you can slide out of gear...(you guys that understand power shifting know what I am talking about...) I hear a whirling noise.... Whoo-Whoo-Whoo- etc...I hear it sounds near the clutch (guesstimating since its near the front/dashboard)
I would have to drive it another 500 or so miles to get home. No mods, started trip with about 300 miles... Did not use cruise control.. Varied speed around 60-90 mph to keep the rpms moving since there isn't a lot of mileage here... Idk what else to say... This is really bugging me... Never launched the car... And I did search, only results I got was from other parts of the forums saying wheel bearing...

I drive a 2010 Golf Wagon/JSW, and when I'm going at speeds around +60 mph/90 kmph and lift off the accelerator a faint high pitched whirling noise comes on. As soon as I tap the gas pedal it goes away. What this could be?
It's been a week now since I've noticed this, I guess I've never noticed it before or it's getting louder..i don't know?

I would describe the noise as a whirling/vibration sound that can be heard as soon as the gas engine portion of the car kicks in (even in park) but gets louder and more noticeable as the car is in motion, especially at highway speeds (55 - 65mph). Opening the hood and listening to the engine block, the noise is definitely coming from around the area of the silver-covered portion by the driver's-side, which I believe is the hybrid synergy engine. The noise has gotten to the point where I really get bothered by it driving anywhere, and I have to turn up the radio to try to drown out the noise.

I have Michelin Energy Saver AS tires with 17k miles on them. I describe the sound as a light whirling with a slight warbling variation in the noise louder from the passenger seat. I carry 42 psi in the front tires. The wear is only slight and even with no noticeable variation. I believe it is coming from the R front and is noticeable at 25 to 35 mph on smooth blacktop roads. Wind noise makes it less noticeable at higher speeds. I wonder if it could be a wheel bearing on the R front side? The sound can barely be heard in the drivers seat.

My original dealer told me I was worrying about nothing, yet I had to turn the volume on the car stereo up to 50% to drown out the noise. The next dealership said it was an alignment problem, and after an alignment and 4 new tires, they shrugged their shoulders when the noise persisted. The next dealership said the problem was the front struts needed to be replaced. $800 later the whirling sounds persist and the dealership said they had no other ideas. So roughly $3000 into working with the car dealerships I still have these maddening whirling sounds and no one will ride in my car any longer because the noise is so loud.

I have 250 kms on my new 2016 TSI and noticed a high level on engine sound, like a throaty rumble coming into my cabin. Is this normal and is there a way to reduce it. Did VW add the Soundaktor to the non gti this year?

My friend bought a 2014 Wolfsburg GTI 3 weeks ago.
One week after purchase he noticed a ticking sound from the engine, and went to Stevens Creek VW and asked them if the sound was "normal". The technicians said the noise didn't sound normal, and they'd check it out.
1.5 weeks later, technicians at Stevens Creek VW said it was a faulty lifter. After a full top end tear down and replacing the "faulty lifter", the sound continued, and the technicians opened another ticket with VWoA. After a VWoA technician came down to look at the car, they deemed the sound was "within spec" and said the car was ready to pick up.
I've included a few videos of the sound, as well as a comparison between my car and his. I own the CSG GTI, and he owns the CW GTI.

My car has been making a hissing sound when I turn it off for the past few weeks, I checked the hoses around the intake manifold and they all look to be attached fine.
I took a video and discovered a flex in the rear of my manifold..is this normal? What would be the common issue?

My 2010 Golf TDI 2.0 is currently at the dealership where they are attempting to diagnose this engine sound. They have had it two days and they can not get it to replicate the sound. (Imagine that!!!!). I have shared this video with the service manager however. I have 3000 miles on it now in just over one month old. I would estimate that my car has made this sound on 5 separate occasions and it only does this on the very first start-up of the day after it has sat for atleast 8-10 hours. Outdoor temperature has ranged in 40-50F.
Whenever this happens, it starts acting up within the first 30 seconds and completely disappears withing 2 minutes. The engine actually jerks laterally on each clunk, but the tachometer does not fluctuate when it is going thru this episode and no warning lights come on. Also, if I "give it gas" while it is going thru this episode, it goes away and in no way affects the smoothness of the increased RPM's. I have varied my fuel-up locations and I always wait atleast 2 seconds to ignite the engine after the glow-plug light goes out.

Lately I've been getting this loud annoying squeaking sound from my engine bay at idle. It sounds like its coming from the belt. The car has 16k miles so i dont see why the belt would have a problem already.
