Just came back from lunch and the car seems to be vibrating more than usual. Engine is making some weird knocking noise. I think I also smelled fuel coming from the car. Could it be the cam tensioner?

I was pulling out of my driveway (it's quite steep) in 4x4, turned onto the road and heard a clunk.
I then took it out of 4x4 and continued on. I noticed it was vibrating more than usual. I turned out of a friends driveway (not in 4x4) after that and thought I heard another clunk. The vibrations seemed to get a lot worse after that.
I have a toyota avensis 2001 1.8 vvt-i. Suddenly when i was going to start the car, it started to vibrate and rpm got lower than usual and the engine light was lit. So i changed the spark plug (all of the four). It did still vibrate but less, i could feem it. And when i tried to drive upwards with 1st gear the car started to smell and couldn't get up. It lost do much power. It can drive max. 60 kmh
View 1 RepliesSo, there is a weird ticking that is coming from the belt side of my engine. The speed of the ticking varies(increases) with the speed of the engine. It isn't as fast as a valve knock so I cant figure it out. thoughts?
View 3 RepliesI've had this weird noise coming from the driver side front (i'm guessing inside the engine bay) for the past month now. It started ever since hitting a bad pothole that wasn't avoidable and couldn't see very well during one of the nasty winter storms we got here in PA. Ever since the steering has felt off, like just not all there anymore. Over the smallest of bumps it makes this noise. Extremely aggravating for me since I try to take great care of the car and keep everything tight and new feeling. Since I don't know how to work on newer cars (only mk3 and lower) I have no clue what to do to check... I've had it at the dealership a few times to report the noise, 2 of the times they just took it for a drive around the area and back and each time the tech said he didn't hear a noise (of course).

Also recently noticed that only coming from the same side, the shock over big bumps makes squishy noises, as if it were blown or something...
People have suggested that it could be the sway bar, tie rods, end links, bushings, anything. I personally think it's the strut tower bushing or bearing, but again, I'm not much of a newer car mechanic.

I have a 2010 Toyota Prius. The other day I was stuck in a traffic jam - under 5 mph for at least 30 minutes.....my engine started knocking/vibrating...once out of the jam, it felt like the engine was "missing"....I took it to the Toyota dealer in town and they changed the spark plugs and cleaned the area...the car runs a little better but I was in a funeral procession yesterday and after about 15 minutes the car was knocking again. What the problem could be? The mileage on the car is 125,000 (I drive a lot!)...
View 3 Replies2001 F-150 4.2L automatic, 189k mikes. Gas pedal would do weird knocking/vibrating. It would do it at idle & under acceleration. Gas pedal would knock & sometimes slightly move or kick back at you. Felt like someone was lightly hitting it with a small hammer. Well there is not much to the gas pedal assembly; pedal, throttle cable & mounting bolts/plate. Looking under hood, a bracket from drivers side of motor was pushing back against firewall, which was pushing into gas pedal mounting bolts. I grabbed the bracket & it came off motor. Nothing else attached to bracket. Looks like it rusted off and was pinned between motor & firewall. Well, this fixed the gas pedal problems. But now i wonder what the bracket is & whats it suppose to hold??
View 3 Replies 2005 has 130,000 trouble free miles. Recently during a long trip the engine started to make more noise than usual. This occurs during acceleration up until the point when you hear the engine really start to work.
I took the car to Toyota and they said it sounded normal. I am picky about my car and know a new noise. My wife even said she can hear it.
I think it sounds a bit like the old lifter rattle my 289 Ford made in my 67 Mustang.
So, after driving my car around for maybe an hour without any warning lights, I turned my car off. I tried to turn it on 15 minutes later when it turned over twice, sounding much louder than usual, then nothing. Tried again and just a single click. So I fear the worst and check the oil which is low but still on the stick and the coolant is fine too. I thought maybe the battery was dead so I tried a jump and that won't turn the engine over either. I put a charged battery from another car in and nada. I tried turning cam gear and also the flywheel pulley with a cheater bar and it doesn't want to move. I'm totally screwed right? That same morning I fiddled with the purge valves for the evap system because of a trouble code which O got to disappear. The engine also sounded funny for like 2 days only during ignition. By funny, it seemed to be louder than normal but no horrible metallic sounds or anything. Is it possible for it just to seize like that for no apparent reason?

View 12 RepliesJust bought a new 2011 GTI last week, now I'm hearing a weird noise when I accelerate in first or in reverse. It just sounds like something is loose in the engine bay. I don't know if it's the wastegate sound that occurs on all TSI's or if it's something else. It's basically like the sound of a vibration but without the feeling of a vibration.

For the past week when i go into boost I hear a strange sound, almost like a wet belt sound (everyone knows that annoying sound on old ford on a rainy day) Again it only happens when in boost. When the car idles the noise is gone.

I have a 2006 Subaru Forester with a little over 119,000 miles.
For the past several weeks, maybe a month, it has been making a weird noise... it comes from the 'engine' area... my husband thinks it might be a belt or something. Sometimes there is a burning smell, especially if we're on a long trip, going uphill... but the smell isn't always.
The sound sounds like... a remote control car that you push with your hands, instead of using the remote control. So it's kind of like a winding/whining sound... the sound happens when it is in park, and drive, whether I'm driving or at a stop.
I have weird noise and from just a quick inspection of the car, I don't even know where to start to inspect...
Current setup:

stock clutch
stage 1+ Unitronic @ 5000km (1 track day)
stage 2 w/ hpfp Unitronic @ 27000km (1 recent track day, drove it hard but not prolonged, perhaps 20-25km on a 1km course over 2 hours at max)

drivetrain taken out to install DP @ 25000km.
H&R Rear Sway (setting: stiff)
I feel a weird 'clink' as I turn, and via multiple observations here are the only times I've found it semi-repeatable.
- heavy hard turns (only had a few instances where i could try this out and not 100% repeatable)
- slowly pulling out of a parking spot (turn radius on the steering wheel is more than 50% of a turn) - usually turning left (repeated a couple of times now)
- turning into a driveway (mini bump) @ less than 20km/h
- usually right turn more often then left does this appear
Also, its the noise is coming from the driver side wheel and sometimes right above the drivetrain. this can also be felt if my clutch is semi-engaged (or when i have my foot on the pedal). I have hoisted up my car to do a quick visual inspection (sadly didn't pay attention to the drive train /shaft). but found nothing suspicious (keep in mind it was relatively quick as the shop was closing). one thing i found that was loose and thought was the culprit was a plastic arm with a metallic tube that came off on the driver's side rear control arm .
I recently installed my 3" GHL exhaust along with my stage 1 BFI dogbone and I recently noticed a very faint rattle when I am engine braking. I can only hear it when there's no cars around or when its quite. but i cant figure it out. (I still have the stock exhaust heat shield in from the cat back so I am not ruling that out as a possibility).

(cold start obviously, keep in mind its cold where i live at this time of year), there is a weird whistling like sound. goes away when the rpm gauge hits 10/ after 1 minute of the engine running. at odd times it will come on again after leaving the car off for a few hours, after work for example. I was told it because I'm using the wrong coolant??
View 4 RepliesI am getting a vibration when i turn right (its so bad the damn e brake button vibrates) and its gone when i turn left! Its not the tires and its not the wheel bearing.... My buddy says it could be the symptom for the haldex or the transfer case.... I just don't get it....how can something like that go bad...
View 18 RepliesThe car is a 2011 GTI 2dr w/6 speed, 12,000miles, cat back exhaust and that's it. Recently when I get into my car in the morning when it is cold (social not that cold) and either put it in reverse or just take off from first the clutch makes a really loud whining noise. Generally, it will go away after a few minutes but sometimes it doesn't go away even after the car is warmed up.
The thing that is weird to me is the clutch isn't slipping at all, even on a hard pull. I know that VW's clutches don't have reputation for lasting that long but I would be pissed if they said it was my fault seeing I drive it nice 9 times out of 10. On another note, I had my leaking water pump replaced a couple weeks ago, ever since then after the car warms up something is making a loud noise that sounds exactly like when your ears are ringing. I popped the hood and it sounds like it coming from the rear of the engine bay but its really to hard to pinpoint exactly where.
It goes wubwubwubwubwub when I turn right, wheel bearing? Kinda annoyed as I just got the car...2001 gls
View 8 RepliesWe have a '95 GMC Vandura G2500 and today when we took off from a stoplight the van suddenly started vibrating like crazy and running rough. It was making a knocking noise and the van kept shaking the whole way home. The shaking was worse both coming to a stop and accelerating. We could also smell gas when we stuck our heads out the window.
