I have FK Highsport coilover and have had them installed for a little under a year. After about 6 months I started hearing this thunk sound coming from the front right suspension. The sound only happens when I turn right, and when I turn from right to straight. I haven't had the time to pull it apart yet. I was thinking that it might be a binding spring.
View 2 RepliesMy 06 Sonata LX 3.3 has me smiling except for two items, MPG, which I hope will improve after break-in, and a "k-thump" sound from the area of both rear tires. It occurs as I pass over fairly small bumps and ridges in the pavement, and remind me of the sound that is made by a bad shock. I took it to the dealer at 900 miles. They drove it and inspected the rear end and proclaimed all was OK. They claim it is caused by the low profile tires. I have never had low profile tires before, but it seems to me if that were the cause, the front tires would make the same sound, but they don't. The front end is sooo quiet. All tires have the recommended 30 PSI.
View 469 RepliesI am having this issue when crossing a bump at high speed, it only sound when the shocks de-compress and only happening in the mornings so I think it might be the piston rod inside the shocks that is "getting dry" on the night and therefore making the sound in the mourning.
View 3 RepliesI have a clunking noise from the right front suspension when going over bumps. I've replaced the Strut bushings that were collapsed, the control arm bushings that had play and the noise is still there. There is no play in the links. There is a slight noise in the sway bar bushings when struck with a rubber mallet. I hate to keep replacing parts chasing down this noise.
View 9 RepliesSo I've had my R now for almost 6 months now and my PSS10's have been in it since day 1. I bought the car approx 4 months used with 8200kms on it. It's now at 16600km's.
Ever since I've had it, there's been a front end suspension noise that reminds me very much of the typical upper strut mount bearing and bushing noises. It's like a popping sound.
It only happens at low speed(parking lot) but with most moves like fwd, rev, turns and straight lines. The upper strut mount bearings and bushings were just replaced < 2 weeks ago, but it still does it and just as bad.
I have a sound that sounds like something is loose in the left front suspension area. A few weeks ago I put on VWR springs and 034 strut mounts. Then I got a tire rotation and alignment with in the same day. On Friday night it started making noise. While driving at any speed and the slightest bump I will hear the noise. There is no vibration in the steering wheel and nothing seems off about how the car handles. When I parked the car I tried pushing down on the front end and I didn't hear any thing abnormal. I jacked up the car today and I looked around and felt around on most of the suspension to see if anything was loose or out of place. I didn't notice any thing.
View 6 RepliesLike the title says... Do any lowered mkvi's have any noises or popping sounds coming from your car's front suspension? The reason I ask is on my MKV R32 I had H&R springs on stock shocks and at low speed full lock turns I had a slight poping noise. Everything on the R was installed right and it only had ~3-4k miles on it when the springs were installed. After doing research it seemed like a fair amount of lowered MKV's had this noise and it was thought to have something to do with the strut bearing.
View 8 Replies2004 Jetta 1.8t manual, sport package with about 85,000 miles on it and I've owned it since new.
About a year ago I had a shop replace the strut bearings while it was in for some other things. After I picked it up my alignment was jacked and there was a binding sound coming from the front end. The shop said the sound was just the springs settling in. It did go away after a while. Still don't understand why the alignment was off but I aligned it myself and all was good for a while.
About two weeks ago I myself replaced:
Lower control arms (stock VW) and ball joints (FEQ or Lemforder, not sure which) with R32 rear bushings and poly front (I HATE poly bushings but that's for another time)
Tie rod ends (FEQ)
Front brakes & rotors (stock VW)
I also threw in a oem Audi lower stress brace while I was under there but I don't think that has anything to do with my problem. Then I took it to a shop to have an alignment done on it. Everything is now within spec except that the caster is 6.6 degrees on the left front and 6.2 degrees on the right front. How does this happen?
So now my problem: There is a fairly loud binding sound coming from the front of the car randomly. It sounds like the coil spring is binding but maybe it is something else? it mostly does it when I reverse for a bit and then put it in first and drive forward or forward then reverse so something is shifting front to back. Steering doesn't really seem to have any noticeable effect.
2003 Jetta TDI 245K miles- owner's records show front bushings were replaced some time ago.
Suddenly started a groaning sound whenever the front driver's side suspension compresses. Started suddenly right after I hit a speed bump but not "hard". I parked and bounced on each corner of the car, no noise on anything but the front driver's side. The suspension's "give" felt similar across all 4x corners.
Of course whenever I'm braking or turning I get that sound. But it's definitely the suspension. And like I say, it's sudden.
I didn't see anything wrong, but the wheel's mostly in the way. The wheel cowling isn't rubbing the wheel. Handling feels fine, still goes straight with the hands off the wheel.
Front driver side area making a flat tire noise. Replaced the tires and axle and wheel bearings. Kinda lost on what could btw making the noise. Alignment done 15k miles ago when lowering springs and new shocks were put on.
View 5 RepliesI'm having 06 GS300. Just got the car about 2 months ago with 108,000k / 1 owner and she rides like a champ and I love this car! I want to do some preventive maintenance on her so she can keep me riding in style for years to come. The few things that I have noticed are as follows.....
1. Clanking sound in front end suspension when I roll over small bumps. It does not happen all the time, but it is noticeable. Almost sounds like a loose center cap on a set of rims. That's the sound I liken it to. Sounds like two pieces of metal hitting together. I was thinking some bushings maybe.
2. Squeaking coming from my front drivers side when turning the wheel while backing out of driveway or driving into driveway and when negotiating changes in the road while driving. Not very loud.
3. Suspension seems a little flat and I feel as though the struts and shocks need to be replaced. I'm wanting to lower it to fill the wheel wells and add a set on 20' rims offset 9.5 on front 10 on the back.
Today, I took my 2007 Saab 9-3 2.0T with 67,000 miles on it to a local mechanic to check the right front suspension that has been making a clunking sound when hitting potholes, etc. I was told that the right front coil spring is broken. This afternoon, I looked on line on some of the Saab discussion boards and saw that for cars up 2006 that there was an extended warranty offered for 10 years and 120,000 miles due to multiple cars with this problem caused by an, allegedly, faulty design that allowed the springs to corrode and fail prematurely in snow belt states that salt the roads.

View 20 RepliesSo I took my 15 Passat sport into the dealer this morning because of an odd shuddering sound I was getting from the front suspension. Of course the car didn't make a single sound while we were there.
Then tonight when I went to back into a parking spot I heard what I first thought was the typical groaning of pads and rotors slowly moving except that I wasn't.

This is simply me going from reverse to drive. No change in brake pressure and no movement at all. Shuddering type noise when hitting drive way or steep speed bump at an angle? I can feel it through the steering wheel.
Been having this problem for about a month now, and it seems like it keeps getting worse. The shocks feel like they are handling bumps ok....I feel no difference in how the car handles really.....but at lower speeds, going over bumps or pavement variations, I have a thuddy/clunky/floppy (I don't know the best way to describe it) sound coming from the suspension. I think it's from the front. I remember we had something similar to this before but it was in the rear, and I think the culprit ended up being something with the sway bar maybe? This front problem sounds much worse than the rear did though.

Since we took ownership of our 2009 v6 there has been a rumble when going over bumps in the road. A certain amount of this I have put down to the big alloys and low profile tyres, but have always suspected that there was something else amiss.
Today I took her into our local Phaeton garage and asked them to investigate. They has hinted at worn drop links. However after checking everything out in the ramp they can find nothing wrong. They even replaced one if the drop links (whatever they are).
So they came up with nothing wrong but could still here the rumble when driving over un-even surfaces. When I change to sport mode I think the rumble gets less, where to look or what could be wrong.
I'm getting a clunk sound from my Passat's front left suspension when making turns. I've found info on how to diagnose control arms and I plan to jack the car up tomorrow and check it out. But how would I diagnose a tie rod end problem?
My Passat has 53,000 miles on it.
I have a 2002 accord 4-cyl with a 5-speed with 89,xxx miles. Just a few months ago, I noticed a clunking sound coming from the front suspension when I go over certain bumps. "Certain" bumps are usually wavy pavement or dips (not wide dips, but short/concise ones), and sometimes certain speed bumps. Sometimes the sound happens regardless of the types of bumps though, but the aforementioned ones usually bring the noise quite consistently. The sound hasn't really gotten worse, but it hasn't been getting better either.
A while back when I had my timing belt done, the mechanic stated that one (or more) of my engine mounts were worn. Is it possible one or more of my engine mounts is the source of this issue (from the engine "rattling" around in the compartment. I'm not sure if that's even possible, just a hypothesis) or is it purely suspension. PS. The sound isn't quite a sharp metal on metal sound. Its more of a "thump" or "clunk" coming from the front end (left or right) as if its bottoming out or a bushing or spacer has worn off. Its just loud enough to drive me crazy, and sometimes I can feel it through the floor.
I own a 2005 Lincoln LS V8 with 111,000 miles on it.
Recently the Advance Trac-traction control light will come on for no reason. When I push the console button-to disengage the Advance trac-nothing happens.
However, if I shut the car off, and restart it, the light goes out. Most often the light will stay out for a few days. Once in a while it will light up in a mile or so. Again, this is intermittent.
I did hear a big thunking sound from the rear end the other evening upon a hard acceleration. I do not know if this is related.
Both the loud thunk-almost like someone has hit the back of the car- and the advance trac light have occurred before; never together though. What may be causing the advance trac light to act this way? And what the thunk is from? !!
Sometimes it happens at slow speeds too but it's so random that I know it will never do it at the dealer. I can't say "When I take off fast or stop hard it makes a weird sound" it's a lease and they will probably blame me for whatever is wrong. Sometimes the tranny doesn't feel right either. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD that made a similar sound and it was bushings but this car has only 4,000 miles on it. What should I do?
View 2 RepliesOn my 2012 F150 Supercrew 4x4, when I'm entering parking lots, or other places where I'm turning and going over bumps at the same time, the front suspension make a fairly loud sound. It seems to be much worse when turning left, and the sound comes from the Passenger front side, I think.
The sound is a fairly sharp "snap" or "crack" or maybe even a "bong" kind of thing. So all you keyboard mechanics. As a bonus question, once we have guessed what it is, can I fix it myself with hand tools and very little mechanical aptitude?
