Golf V R32 :: Pinging Noise Coming, Might Related To Tensioner
Mar 30, 2012
I have a pinging (imagine the sound of a trailer's chain hitting the pavement when being towed behind you) sound definitely coming from the front end that is only noticeable when doing 50+. No noise present at any other time....not even a faint noise with the hood up. I was advised to check for play in the tensioner pulley and nothing...feels solid. I did have a Neuspeed power pulley put on about a month ago but did not change out the tensioner. Rotated tires and put in torque arm insert about 2 weeks ago. Just a fyi on what I've done to the car since purchasing in Jan and she has 70k miles. I just noticed this pinging noise 3-4 days ago.
VW guy is going to look her over/drive her on Monday...but I'm concerned about further damage until the problem is diagnosed/resolved.

I recently had a good amount of work done to my Mk4 R32. Last night on my drive home from the stealership I ended up with a passenger headlight out and a very loud clicking/ticking noise which seems to be coming from the Serpentine belt area. After closer inspection it looks like the tensioner lines are't lined up which means my belt and tensioner need to be replaced? I'm not sure, but I have a video and this picture.

My 2013 sonata gls is only 2 months old and I am hearing a pinging or more like a pop noise coming from my engine about every 15 sec when in idle, what it could be?

I have a 98 abe motor 105k on it, since i have had it its had like a lifter tap, im assuming its coming from the chain tensioner. i had the head worked on after broken timing belt about 2000 miles ago still no change.

So from reading around a lot, it seems like the chirping is from the belt tensioner or idler pulley. That said, I've not been able to find anything definitive. I tried to do the water bottle squirt test (from Gates' youtube video) and either I did it wrong or the chirp did not go away implying the issue is not the belt. While I was looking in, I could see the tensioner shaking some.
If my tensioner should not be moving, do I just need the pulley or the pulley and the mount?
- Pulley [URL] ....
- Pulley and mount [URL] ....
Also, if the above items will fix the chirp, which brand would be best?
2007 RX 350, 113K.
Chirping gets worse as it heats up. Seems to happen independent of ambient temperature. Purchased a year ago so unsure of the history of part changes.

So my tensioner is kinda bouncy and i have this odd start up noise that i think that is causing and i was told that when the mark passes the 3 lines my spring is donezo. The pulley is just fine though.

I have a 2004 F150, 5.4L V8. A few years back I was in an accident when someone slammed into the front of my truck. The right front wheel & tire took the brunt of the accident. I thought the repair shop had everything back to normal until recently I occasionally have a grinding sound coming from the right front side, seems to be related to the axle. It doesn't do it all the time just at random while I'm driving. The only solution I can find is to pull over or slow my speed to a crawl. Once I slow down enough or turn my wheel one way or the other its like something SLAMS back into place. I had it looked at by a local mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. Could it be something in my right front axle?

I tried to look for earlier posts re a new squeak that my R32 has just developed, now at 16k kms, 10k miles. Noticed it when I was cruising slowly towards the house, a light squeaking as I went on and off the gas; then found that it did it while sitting on the driveway, so I'm thinking maybe a motor mount or exhaust related. Our roads up here in Ontario have been a bit messy, but don't think I have hit anything hard.
My local VW dealer does not handle Audis and has never seen an R32 except mine when I stopped by to pick up a filter, so I don't want a wasted trip if they do not have the "fix", as they are not that close. After owning it for 7k km I'm getting used to the Haldex and DSG, but wish those paddles did not move with the wheel, probably why VW made it upshift in M?

Mostly while negotiating in very crude camp ground roadways, we started to hear a new noise. This started before the incident I will be reporting in my third thread, so I do not attribute this noise to that incident. The noise seems to come from applying the brake when the car is already stopped or nearly stopped. Its a bit of a chirp, but it is a low-throated chirp. It think they come in twos, "chirp, chirp."

V10... Suspect it's the power steering pump...
Seems to come from left of centre of engine. Not taken any covers off yet to see what can be seen..
Scans clear. It's arguably too loud even to drive! So needs some attention very soon.

My Prizm is making a noise that seems to be related to the blower but sounds like it is coming from behind the control panel/radio. Even changes volume and stops with bumps. I am going to check the blower motor motor, but sound doesn't appear to be coming from the dash area where I believe the blower motor is. What else it may be?

Got a CEL a couple days ago and had it scanned by the dealer. Threw two codes:
p0068 - throttle position correlation
p0101 - mass or volume air flow circuit range performance intermittent
The dealer thought the MAF was dying or dead. I replaced it with a Bosch one from ECS Tuning this afternoon. I went for a test drive around the block but it seems that the problem persists. The idling seems rough, almost like there is a misfire or something. Perhaps on a related note I am still running the original battery that came with the car. I asked the dealer about the battery when they checked the MAF and they said the voltage was low and they recommended replacing it before winter. Is it possible that the battery is dying and it's throwing these two codes?
The service manager said to drive it a few days to see if the CEL clears itself or have it cleared (they can do it or I can do it via borrowing someone's VCDS). I'm tempted to just go and get another battery tonight and install it and see if that's the problem.

I have a 2010 III prius with about 20,000 miles. at about 5000 miles, it developed a pinging noise that has steadily got worse. It appears to be worse when the car is cruising on level ground at about 50mph. the pinging noise appears to be metal in nature but sometimes i think it sounds like electrical arcing. the frustrating thing is that it comes and goes. some days it does it a lot, some days not at all. The grade of gas does not seem to matter much, although it appears to have some effect.
Naturally, the days i have taken the car to the dealer are the days it isn't making the noise, although one day a technician did briefly hear it so they don't think i'm nuts. also naturally, the dealer doesn't have a clue what is wrong. the dealer said they hooked up a computer and everything checks out OK. they say that if it was serious, it would show up on the computer. I asked them to specifically check the timing advance mechanism and they said it was OK.(to be honest, I really doubt they looked at anything. they basically brushed me off) they also said that if it is piston pinging, that it won't hurt the car.

Today I noticed a pinging noise on the highway when accelerating around 60 mph. It certainly doesn't sound like its coming from the lower end and it happened with the engine fully warmed up. I've always changed the oil on time, never has it overheated and it performs very well otherwise, no power losses.
No check engine light is on. In fact, I have heard this same noise on older cars I have owned (Cutlass Ciera) around the same mileage 105000. I am thinking of adding an oil additive, and I have heard that 1 Qt of ATF fluid followed by a drain and refill works well.
I might also do a fuel system purge, BG's has a good machine for that Could this be an EGR issue? Replacing EGR valve? If so was it easy and where is it located. I am hoping I didn't break a valve spring....

is it possible to upgrade the wastegate so that it makes that pinging noise, not bov noise wastegate noise.

I have had my 2010 Accent just over 2 months now, and have had no problems at all. It has 4500 miles on it (I travel often)
Starting on Monday, when I shut the car off, it made a kind of hollow pinging noise. I have not switched where I fill up my tank, nor have I been driving any differently, to make this happen. This happened again Tuesday morning, but has not happened since.
Then, this morning (Thursday) when I started my car, it made kind of a screeching noise. I immediately shut off the car, and restarted it. I did not hear the noise again. Then tonight, same thing happened.

I had the differential control module recall/flash performed last week and now the car makes a whining noise at speeds north of 35mph. The noise seems to emanate from the front of the car (near the radiator). The dealer was able to hear the sound -- and unable to diagnose the problem. They reflashed the stepper -- and the noise remained.
They moved the stepper motor, drove the car -- and the noise remained. Finally, they put the stepper back in -- reflashed it -- and then the noise went away. Subsequently, I drove the car noise-free for about 250 miles (over several days) -- and then the noise came back. I'm also having the same problem that others report about the tight-radius binding when turning (which the flash was supposed to solve).
questions:
1) any experience of whining noise after the flash recall
2) i see that some had the stepper motor replaced...what was the underlying reason?
3) it seems that the stepper is the problem -- but could it really be the differential that's not keeping the right ratios?

I took my 09 6 cyl. AWD Santa Fe Ltd. into the dealership this morning because of a whoop whoop whoop noise when accelerating normally or maintaining speed on a grade. A bit like a helicopter sound. The frequency of the noise increases with speed and seems to come from the front driver's side. I thought it might be a wheel bearing.
$2000+ later I have new tires, a 4 wheel alignment, new rotors and pads fore and aft, a new tie rod end and a car that goes whoop whoop whoop when I accelerate or climb a hill.
The car has 125,000 km. (78,000 mi.) on it and has been very well maintained. Detonation maybe?

My 2002 Buick LeSabre developed a droning/humming noise from the left front related to the motion of the car and not the engine. Also, the check tire pressure warning comes on but tire pressures are ok. My husband replaced the left wheel bearings and the noise was still there. Ditto, the CV axle. Yesterday I noticed the right front tire has a bald spot around the outer edge.

Vehicle is a 94 Suburban. The front brakes were done approximately 14K miles ago. Rear about 10K miles ago. Ever since the front brake job (new rotors, pads) there has been a sound, sort of like spring tension being released whenever I (quickly) release the brake pedal. I think I notice it now more than ever because I don't have working ac and the windows are usually down. The thing is, if I slowly release the pedal I hear nothing. When it does happen it is definitely coming from the front and is more predominant (I think) on the right side. So far I have yet to hear this sound coming from any other vehicle stopped beside me in traffic so something must be out of whack.
I mentioned this to the mechanic who did the brakes (only shortly thereafter) and he checked it out and said nothing was amiss. Recently I had new tires installed so I asked the (different) mechanic to check the brakes again (front and rear). Apart from cleaning out the drums and a minor adjustment on the rear they said everything was good. Now I've never had any issues with stopping and I've had a few hard braking episodes without incident but this snapping noise for want of a better description is driving me nuts. One final observation: I cannot get the 'sound' to occur when I am sitting in Park and depress and then quickly release the brake pedal.

I currently own a 2007 Camry LE 4cycl, and so far its been running great with about 115000kms. First off, I was rotating my tires and notices that the outer cover on the shocks (all 4) is loose...is this normal or is it a sign that they need changing (I have never changed anything related to suspension, so i wouldn't know)?
This is what I am referring to: [URL] .....
The second issue is more difficult to pinpoint. When i am stopped at a stop sign or light, and i accelerate I hear kind of a pinging noise, if i rev the engine in neutral i don't hear the noise. I had the dealer check it and they said it could be the flex pipe, which i had changed but the noise is still there. What it could be? The pinging noise is like a metallic noise, i.e., like pins inside a metal container.
