Golf V R32 :: Opening Sunroof Causes Loud Vibration?
Mar 15, 2009
So today was above freezing.. [URL] .... I open the sunroof as I'm driving around town, and I notice a rather distinct rumbling noise.. I put my hand against it and discover the roof is vibrating harmonically. Which I've discovered seems to happen any time I have the sunroof fully open, over ~30mph (50kmh). If I close it one tick, the problem disappears completely, I guess as the airflow changes. Is this badly-designed aerodynamics, or actually something misplaced or misaligned in my sunroof?

Noticed earlier today that my one-touch opening quit working on my sunroof. Release the switch and the sunroof stops moving. Push it back (to open) and it switches directions from whichever direction it was last moving. Hold it until it opens all the way and keep holding it, and it will start closing again (instead of stopping). Pushing the switch forward, backward, or tilting it has the exact same effect - it moves the sunroof in the opposite direction of the direction that it last moved.

It's been pretty nice out lately and I have been using the sunroof regularly. Most of my driving is around town and not at high speeds and I haven't had any issues. Yesterday, I decided to stretch the legs of the car and take it out on the highway.
Everything was going fine until I heard a loud vibration coming from above my head. I looked up and saw the back edge of the sunroof opening (sunroof is open) vibrating up and down pretty violently. I quickly slowed down and it stopped after about 30-45 seconds. Then on the way home on the highway the car did the same thing 3 more times.
It's the headliner along the back of the sunroof opening that's vibrating up and down. I had the roof open to the normal position, not all the way back, just to the last mark on the turn nob. This all happened at about 75-80 mph, nothing crazy for the highway.

My girlfriend drives a 99 Passat and while driving the other day the sun roof opened on it's own. moving the switch did nothing. We had to manually close the sunroof. a few minutes later it did it again. Usually I'd tell her she's nuts and imagining things but i was in the car while it happened.

My mother keeps telling me her sunroof keeps opening (tilting) by itself and I didn't believe her until I was in the car when it happened. It just goes up by itself... Should I just bring it in?

Over the last few days my car's sunroof keeps opening and shutting by itself. Its starting to get really annoying and embarrassing especially while on a date.

When opening the sunroof, usually for the first time in a day, the sunroof will make a squeal kind of noise. Nothing appears to be in the tracks or anything.
Usually if I close it, and reopen it, it seems to go away (guess it re-lubed?)
Kind of embarrassing on a newish car (2014) with only 30k miles.

My Mom has an '04 RX330, and the other day the sunroof randomly opened, and she closed it with the button with no problem. For the last 3 days, this has occurred randomly (opening only - all closing is by her) and all occurrences are when she is driving (not parked).
I told her to wrap the fob in foil today to remove that connectivity and to see if the fob is to blame. We will replace those batteries anyway as I don't know that they have ever been replaced.

Just picked up a 2001 GLX wagon and it is something my 93 did -- when opening the sunroof all the way, it makes a "popping" noise. With my last car, it was from something that snapped rendering it useless.

When I open my sunroof, it doesn't fully open in one shot. If I want it fully open I must press the button again and hold it. Is this normal?

'07 ES350 sunroof makes a thud when initially opening... Sounds like its actually dropping down fast and hitting bottom. Occurred once prior and dealer said they cleaned the track. How do I clean the track?

Bought my 2004 Lexi RX330 in June 2014 with 96k (now has 105k - I drive a lot). It is beautiful and I love it! However, I am NOT in love with the sunroof that is currently stuck open. It's been making a weird noise upon opening (think bag of chips crackly) for the past few weeks. Yesterday was gorgeous weather in TX, so it was open most of the day. Come time to put her to bed, the sunroof would not close. Making a horrible grindy/clicky noise and closes about 4 inches then stops... then it starts to open again. Weird! There's nothing I can see in the tracks that is stopping it. The passenger side looks like it would close, but the drivers side looks like it is stuck. Tried to take the sunroof motor out, but there is a metal bracket in the way. Besides the fact, what to do with the motor once I had it out...

Couple days ago I took out the factory air box and cut the bottom out. I also cleaned my K&N filter at the same time. I cut the whole bottom edge to edge up to about 2" from the flapper on the motor side of the box. Re-installed and everything is tight. I drove the car and noticed a LOUD or what I consider loud noise from about 3,000rpm to redline. I am thinking it could be just the additional air being sucked from the air box. However its much louder then I would expect from a CAI. Does a CAI make a loud difference? I noticed a increase in performance so I know its working. Also, it could be described a a light, smooth sounding exhaust leak. But I am susceptible since this problem was not their prior to the intake mod.

I had my A/C and dryer replaced because the last one basically wore itself out after 135K miles on my '01 TDI.
After I got the car back, whenever the air condition is turned out, I sometimes get a very loud intermittent vibration.
I made a video: [URL] ....
What could be the cause of this?

So here is my situation, back in September I had to replace my passenger side cv axle on my 99' Mk IV Jetta and ever since then I have had a vibration whenever I exceed speeds over 70. This vibration is accompanied with a droning sound that gets louder the faster I go. But the weird part is all of this only happens when I am accelerating. If I push in the clutch or take my foot off of the accelerator it goes away immediately. Since all that started (for other reasons I might add) I have replaced the tires, both front ball joints, the driver side steering knuckle and both front struts.
Additionally and I'm not sure if this is related but it does seem coincidental. The muffler bumps on the body when I'm accelerating as well, but only after the exhaust has warmed up. I am at a loss. When the tires were installed they did a balance on the wheels and they didn't say anything about the wheels being bent or "out of round".

So I have a 2004 gti that makes a very loud noise when i turn the wheel even slightly to the left there is also a vibration that shakes the whole right side of the car. I assumed based on the sound and vibration that it was the wheel bearing. the bearing was shot but when i replaced it nothing changed. so it has a brand new wheel bearing and the cv joint is good ive already checked it everything seems to be as it should. i cant think of anything else it could be. What the problem could be caused by?

Recently had an aftermarket turbo back exhaust system installed. After driving for a short while, I noticed that between 2500 and 3500 RPMs the noise was very loud. Once I hit the highway (in which the engine almost exclusively hangs around those numbers), it was almost unbearable to sit in the car while having that constant droning sound. I have had and been in cars with aftermarket exhaust systems before and never heard anything quite like this. It is pretty tame below 2500 and once you hit 4000, it sounds quite nice and that horrible drone goes away. I really trust the shop that did the work, so I doubt it was faulty install. Could it be a faulty design or maybe just the one that I received?
This exhaust is from a reputable maker and they designed this system specifically for the Golf R. I did have some other mods done at the same time (Coilovers, Engine Mount Insert, Intake and a Tune). I know the insert may cause a little bit of vibration and hence a little bit of extra noise, but nothing like this. While driving on the highway at 3000 RPMs, I cannot even clearly see the cars behind me through the rear windshield as there is so much vibration from all the noise.
Forgot to mention, this TBE is resonated with a CAT, so even more reason for concern. Would expect it to be quiet by comparison to a CAT-less non-resonated system
