Golf V R32 :: Oil On Differential Around The Area Where Axles Exit
May 15, 2012
My rear differential has an oily film around the area where the axles exit the differential. The oil is not dripping, no oil puddles - it is a film of oil with road dirt stuck to it. You can wipe your finger on it and it looks like black grease on your finger. Is this film normal? The dealership says it's normal. I say it should be dry.
By the way, 10,000 miles ago I had a similar symptom and the same dealer (different technician, advisor and service manager) relaced the axle seals under warranty. The new guys say VW will only replace the seals if it is dripping. It was not dripping the last time they fixed it. Now they say they cannot support a repair. Car still has drivetrain warranty.
Two weeks ago I changed my own oil as part of the 40K service. I told them that I saw the weeping axles at that time.

How to exit out of the bluetooth screen when i don't have the phone sync'd up?? I want to get back to the regular screen that has all the other options like the digital speedometer, trip time...etc. It eventually resets back to that screen, but it takes a few days for it to happen and annoys the crap out of me.

When I start moving in either direction I get this horrible sound front the axles. I think. They click and just sound bad. I also have some squeaks front the front end too. Tomorrow I am going to take a video and post it on here. The car is lowish, top of tire is even with the fender. Could the axles be binding because they are too long?

I just had both axle's replaced. Looked for OEM but couldn't find availability so I went with FAQ. Just had a local shop do the work. When I got my car back I've noticed that at idle I can feel some vibration. The noise is really subtle but if I rest my foot on the pedals I can feel it through the pedal. I'd describe it as a revolving sound, almost like it's coming from moving parts, although I'm at idle.

Looking to get a set of VWracing springs but wondering if there is a way to pull the front struts without having to pull the axles out?

Posted a while back about a rattling/clunking noise coming from my front suspension. Since my car had nearly 100k miles on it and was still all stock, I went through and replaced ever single part of the front suspension. (Control arms, ball joints, got some Koni coil overs, strut mounts, sway bar end links, swar bar bushings). Turns out the noise wasn't actually related to the suspension. I've got massive play in both of my front axles. They make horrible rattling/clunking noises going over any sort of bump, even the REALLY small ones.

So I have the dreaded rear diff whine, which started about a month (1000 miles) ago. I've read a bunch of the past posts, but still can't find a solution other than a) live with it, or b) spend $3500 for a whole new diff. (95k miles - no warranty) It seems the general consensus is that the problem stems from a loosened pinion nut. Is there no way to just tighten the nut? Or if I do will the whine continue because the gears are now worn? BTW I just had all the diff and tranny fluids changed. Made no difference.

Any troubleshooting tips on determining where the noise is coming from at the rear of the car? There is a pretty audible hum at 55 mph coming from the rear of the car and I am not sure if its the balancer or the diff. I'm reading horror stories of improperly serviced rear diffs causing the diff to fail and starting to freak out.

It was brought to my attention that staggered wheels Can blow out the rear dif? Is this common? I currently have 18x8 and 18x9 rear summer wheels and I haven't seen any issues occur yet.

Question: Does the the VAQ differential require regular maintenance/changing of the oil?
I know I've seen this question discussed, but the answer I've always seen was that it does not. I believe that this answer comes from watching the Borg Warner powerpoint video, where the presenter claims the differential is maintenance free.
While reading the Maintenance Service Manual, I noticed that VW does in fact require servicing of the VAQ every three years, and gives the procedure for doing so.

Have some 'whine' coming from the rear differential under deceleration. In my case it just started occurring last night and seems to be audible over 55MPH and while in 5th or 6th gear after I let up off the throttle as to engine brake.
It seems like the answer or solution pertains to the input shaft pinion retention nut eventually backing off, as well as oil starvation to the unit, but has this actually been confirmed? My rear diff was replaced over 4 years ago under warranty after it failed and enduring 2 wheel drive for a bit.

VW GTI 1.8T 5 speed.
So I've blown the differential on my transmission, it's been blown for a little while. I have basically no transmission fluid at all.
Question: Why is the car still driving normally?
Some time ago I was getting a transmission fluid flush and change, my gear shifter was a bit stiff before the change and after changing the fluid it became smoother.
According to my mechanic that would be the result of changing the fluid.
Question: So then why is my gear shifter completely smooth without any transmission fluid at all and a blown differential?
Question: what will happen if I leave it like this? I'm assuming it will eventually seize up?

The setup is:
MK IV .:R32 with 99,000 miles
Stage 2 clutch with 16.5 lbs. single mass flywheel
The clutch, flywheel & throw-out bearing all have about 20,000 miles on them
For some strange reason it looks like my driver's side axle keeps sliding out from it's position in the differential. This 1st happened after I did a dyno run about 6,000 miles ago. I lost half of my transmission fluid cause the axle shaft back out about a half inch. I guess the spindle stopped the shaft from backing out all the way. It appears to have happen again. What holds this axle in position? What keeps the axle from backing off like this?
My shop said the bearing/seal looked new and in good condition. Besides, it's a $15 part. We believed that the axle just snapped into position but after 4 nights at the drag strip it appears to be leaking again.
CV joints look good. Axle looks good. Transmission and differential all look good. Dog gone axle just keeps sliding out. Did the dyno runs damage something?
ALSO, on night two I did 4 strong passes back to back. Some with wheel slip and others hooked up solid. That night I developed THE HAMSTER WHEEL. Thought it was just a heat shield but I hear a noise that can only be explained by HAMSTER WHEEL. It only seems to happen when driving slow and on then off the clutch. Is it the dust shield? Is my rear main seal damaged? Or is it my timing chains on the way out. It only sounds funny at slow speeds with clutch movement. Too hard to trouble shoot alone.

My MK4 Jetta started leaking coolant recently and I'm not sure where it would be coming from. I already checked the reservoir to see if it was leaking out of there but I could not find any leakage. I've found some coolant on the right side driveshaft near the differential, there is also some on the diff. I'm wondering if this could of happened because it has been sitting on a jack stand not being driven for about 2 months. Is it possible that within that time 1 or more of the coolant hoses could have cracked or anything. And while I'm on the subject of why it's on a jack stand, it also has gone through wheel bearings twice within the last 6 months to a year. Is this normal?

Is it possible to turn off the freeway exit info on the nav? This is the info that shows up when you are in a long stretch and it shows POIs in between your current location and the exit that you will take. I do not like that it takes up half of the screen to display info I do not need.

So last night I was cleaning my Passat out and noticed something strange. The front doors have a lighted exit light (you know, that red reflector-like light on the bottom of the door). The back doors have the same but they appear to not be lighted -- is this by design? I would think they would all light up.

I have a 2012 Gen III. The regular headlights do not seem to shut off when I exit the car. The DRL and the other setting (not sure what it is) headlights do shut off when exiting the car. Is this correct?

So I've visited the dilemma of trying to replace my axles 4 times now... going on a 5th... apparently, my car is one of a kind, its a 2000 5 speed 1.8t fwd... so my issue... the axles for the 2000 5 speed 1.8t are not right, no where near close! The v6 manual axles have the wrong hub end, but the correct tranny side..... the 1.8t automatic axles... are about 4 inches too short but everything else is right..
