So I've got an odd noise coming from my engine, sounds like a hum or quiet whine. Almost like the whine of a supercharger.
The noise does get louder when the rpm's increase. So wondering if had the tensioner pulley fail, if there were any noises associated with it prior to it failing?
I have these in 225/40R-18 on VW Goal rims (MkVI GTi). Last month I hit a nice size pot hole and put a very small bend in the outer lip of the right front rim. No mark on the rim, so the tire took the hit. Had a peak inside and the tire was bruised pretty good. Around this same time I noticed a faint humming that seemed to be coming from the front. Figured an inner ply shifted so I replaced that single tire (10,000 on the others).
So the humming is still there and getting a little louder. I've rotated a couple times but the sound is the same. Non-distinct location; seems like it could be coming from all 4 corners.
There is a humming noise coming from the right rear of my R, I'm going to guess that it is the furl pump running? If not I don't know what it could be, or if usually that loud...
Second, I was thinking of getting adjustable rear control arms. I was going to get just one set, to adjust the camber to 0.0 instead of the -1 or so that they usually ride.
Third, I was also contemplating getting upgraded motor, trans, and dogbone mount. I was told it would cut down on transmission noise while letting off the gas pedal whence driving.
I am trying to diagnose a sound that is coming from my 2001 Camry 2.2L. When I accelerate there is a load humming noise coming from the engine. It happens at all speeds and only when I accelerate.

I don't hear it when the truck is cold (1 to 5 minutes after starting), seems to get louder at it its peak (the more I drive). When i open the hood, the humming is coming from the intake. I am a pretty handy guy, just at my witts end right now....not sure, but I was thinking brake booster?

My dad and I have done the regular maintenance on it so far but this weekend after a 3 hour drive, I turned the car back on and a loud whirring/humming/whining noise was coming from the engine. It gets slightly louder with acceleration, but I can barely hear it once I've picked up speed (but it's still there.) It still happens when I am in neutral. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine. Close to the power steering pump area, but the power steering fluid is full (although it is a very dark/black color and has a slight smell...not sure if this is normal.) I'm not having any trouble or hesitation while steering. The rack is operating smoothly and it is not leaking. I plan on taking it into the shop but wanted to go in educated.
View 3 Replies2002 5.4L... I have a humming noise that comes from my engine and wanted to see if any of yall knew anything about it. I sounds like it's on the other side on the driver side firewall near the brake booster. Once the engine runs for a bit it tends to start then. It'll start to hum then ill tap the gas to get the RPMs up a bit then its gone for couple miles then its right back on.

First thought was a distant neighbor using a leaf blower, then realized it was coming from the rear of car. definitely coming from gas tank area. Turned key on, then off and noise was gone.
View 6 RepliesI've been noticing a low pitched humming noise coming from what sounds like the passenger side of the engine. it happened only occasionally at first but within a week of first hearing it, it is now almost all the time. here is some specifics...
-the noise always starts about 2 or 3 seconds after starting the engine.
-the pitch or loudness does not change with increased rpms or with truck in gear driving.
-the noise randomly stops for no given reason whether driving or idling then starts back up again.
-there are no performance issues while making noise, no dip in rpms, nothing. still runs the same
I've listened with the hood up and cant identify where the noise is coming from. is this something i need to get fixed asap or no? I've got a 2001 f250 5.4 with a manual tranny ....
I had the car checked for an odd noise that I've been noticing once the engine is warm. Almost like a humming or low pitch squealing. It's noticeable at idle and low speed from inside and outside the car. Very annoying considering the thing is a month old. Any way, I spent nearly 4 hours waiting and they came up with no solutions. Not a clue, a guess, nothing. The car is still driving normally and i needed it for tomorrow so I didn't keep it over as they suggested. The service manager said he hasn't seen anything like it, but also admitted he knew very little about the '10s. great.
View 10 Replies2005 Jetta. The car makes a loud deep humming noise once I hit about 75mph, and goes away once I get to about 82 or so. I've taken it out of gear and matched the rpm I get at those speeds, and I don't hear the noise at all. It's only when I'm in gear. What this could be?

View 2 RepliesI recently hit a pothole and damaged one of my custom wheels to the point it was dangerous to drive on, I could not find a matching wheel for the car (2007 Chevy HHR) and had to drive on the donut spare for about three days, I put the spare on the rear passenger side, So for about three days I was driving with an 18" rim on one side and a donut spare on the other. I noticed a humming sound when I get to 40 mph. I thought it was just the sound of the tread on the spare, But I have since bought new rims and tires and the humming sound is still there. Again, I only hear it when I get to about 40 MPH, below that, no sound at all. The car seems to shift smoothly. Could driving on two different tires on the rear end have screwed up my differential?
View 4 RepliesI've owned this 1987 BMW since February, and after immense and expensive repairs, it became roadworthy. Recently there has been moderately high pitched hum coming from the Drivers side, approximately under the rear door area of the car. It seems to be coming from a part of the exhaust system(?). This part is white, vibrates, and is cylindrical in appearance.
The car only had one previous owner. He kept all record of the car over the year, so I know of no wrecks, repairs to the exhaust, and/or body work done to that area.
It is a menacing sound but doesn't seem to be affecting anything, and it only happens occasionally. I have noticed it mostly when idling, but it still occurs some when in first and second gear.
How to identify this part? I've looked through a few diagrams, but I am unsure. I need to know the importance of this hum, and whether I should seek a mechanic.
There seems to be a humming noise coming from the back of the treg. It sounds like someone is tapping on a 10 gallon plastic bucket. This only happens when I'm doing 80 MPH. Yes, I know I'm breaking the the law. Still it's annoying. I have the radio off, I have mud and snow tire. Roof racks are on, both at the rear of the treg.

Ok so I'm not sure what is causing the noise I'm hearing. its a humming that I think is coming from the front differential but I'm not sure, maybe it is the transfer case but it certainly feels like its in the front end and my steering does seem affected while in four wheel drive. It only makes the noise while in four wheel drive.
I have one off size tire on the rear end and I'm not sure if the actual tread circumference is the same between the front and rear tires or if any of this would really cause my four wheel drive to act up. I am planning on putting a new set of matched tires on it soon, so if they are the cause of the problem then that's good news.
I just came back from a long weekend and left my 2010 GTI in the garage at home. When I returned the battery was 100% dead. Got a friend to jump it and it refused to start for about 30 minutes. Finally it grudgingly turned over and eventually started. So I drove it around for an hour, came home, turned it off and tried to start it - to see if it had charged at all. Again it turned over very slowly, and eventually started up. Seems very strange that it's so slow to charge.
So now I have it on a trickle charger and with the engine off I noticed a weird humming/buzzing sound. It seems to be coming from underneath, somewhere in front/near the right rear wheel. I waited 30 minutes to see if it would turn off once the car cooled. But it's still running. I've never heard that before and no wonder the battery died. What's going on? This is a mystery.
It happen already at least 4 times or more I park my car in garage I went to grab something out of gargeand I hear humming noise coming from the car some place feels like its coming from the rear but I cant pin point it. When I turn the key on it stops I made a video but you cant hear it to good I will post video later. What that can be ????
View 9 RepliesI keep my 2015 RX 350 in the garage, and last night I noticed a humming or buzzing noise coming from it. I switched the ignition to accessory position and turned it off and the noise stopped. A search here turned up many discussions noting is is the gas evaporation leakage check valve and it is a normal function of the vehicle. My question, is this some sort of pump that is running and causing battery drain?
View 3 RepliesI have a 2002 Silverado 1500 Z-71. In 4 wheel drive, I can hear a humming/rubbing noise from the front end. Not real loud, but enough to get my attention. It happens at around 25 mph, and just as I'm coming to a stop. This is on the street.....going straight, not while turning. I only engage the 4 HI during street driving on a straight line drive just to "exercise" the gears and transfer case. I don't notice it on the dirt 'cause of trial noise levels. All fluid levels are normal in transfer case and axles. How much noise is normal during 4 wheel drive operations?
