Came home in the R32 tonight to an awful noise.. Pulled the drivers rear wheel off and pulled a small rock out from between the rotor and dust cap however in doing so, discovered a huge crack in the driveshaft! This is about 2" long... How critical is this to be repaired and is it covered under warranty at 75k mi???
View 6 RepliesFor about the last two months I've noticed a significant drop in my gas mileage, I usually average anywhere from 20-26mpg depending how I drive, but lately even if I am cruising with the windows up no ac nothing I can't get better than about 18mpg.
Car has about 26xxx miles, evoms intake (which I cleaned out the filter thinking that may have been it) EJ exhaust and just got REVO flashed, but my mileage has been suffering prior to that.
I'm going to the dealer tomorrow for an oil change and spark plug replacement thinking maybe thats it, I've already had the recall done, and always use 91 octane (social area) what it may be?
I recently lowered my mk4 golf with coilovers, now the sway bar is rubbing on the right driveshaft axle... could I just get a small diameter driveshaft instead of getting sway bars? My driveshift is about 2 inches wide...

View 10 RepliesI drive a 2010 Golf GTI 6 dsg and its has some performance problems - it is the not responsive huge delay in acceleration sometimes doesn't even push out the turbo, just gives me a high raw with low output. Even at robots its take a while to respond after I have put my foot down? I have taken it back to the dealership and they tell me everything is fine - they changed the DV valves and upgraded the software but the wheels are more powerfull and the output is still low.
View 3 RepliesI drive a manual 2001 vr6 jetta. I drove through a huge puddle on accident. It was still pouring and I couldn't see it, plus I've never seen this section of road flood before. Anyway my car is lowered and I have a CAI. I sucked up water, hydrolocked the car and it bogged down and died.
The next day I got it towed home, took out the plugs and did an oil change(water came out for about 5 seconds followed by the oil) and got a new air filter. I then cranked the engine blowing most of the water out of my cylinders then sprayed starter fluid in the cylinders let it sit for about an hour and cranked again. Put it all back together started it up and it sounded fine. I just let it idle until it got to running temp then shut it off. Came out the next morning started it up let it idle to running temp again shut it off then went to pull the drain plug to see if I could get anymore water out and all I saw was cappuccino colored oil. So I did another oil change and so far it has stayed a nice golden amber color.
Everything seems to be fine other than my EPC light is on. My ASR light is on too right from startup and pushing the button does nothing. I also have a CEL for emissions workshop(before this instance) but that's just an O2 sensor. And lastly it's been hard to shift into 3rd and 4th.
I don't have any problems with acceleration or surging idle or bogging down. The only things I actually notice are the trans issue and not being able to turn on and off my ASR.
Could I have water in the trans? What can I do to fix this? I was planning on doing a fluid change. I'm completely lost with the ASR problem. Everything I've read so far I don't fit in the norm of problems. EPC? No symptoms at all just a light.
My MK4 Jetta started leaking coolant recently and I'm not sure where it would be coming from. I already checked the reservoir to see if it was leaking out of there but I could not find any leakage. I've found some coolant on the right side driveshaft near the differential, there is also some on the diff. I'm wondering if this could of happened because it has been sitting on a jack stand not being driven for about 2 months. Is it possible that within that time 1 or more of the coolant hoses could have cracked or anything. And while I'm on the subject of why it's on a jack stand, it also has gone through wheel bearings twice within the last 6 months to a year. Is this normal?
View 8 RepliesNot driving the R as much now that I got a 2011 Triumph Street Triple R. I use as my primary transportation. But I had the car into the dealer this week for service and they said there is a rubber dampener on the driveshaft that is starting to crack and get loose.
I didn't get time to check out the car on the lift and have not had any problems with this shop in the past nor the mechanic who has ONLY worked on my car since new. The R now has 104K on it.
I just installed Black Forest Industries Torque Arm insert for the 09+ TSI (He said TDI's work too). Anyways the vibration noise is unbearable with the windows up, it is producing this sound frequency/ pressure that gives you an instant migraine. I am a mechanic and I followed the instructions. You really can not keep the car at idle or you head will explode. If you bring the rpm's up to 1000 its all good as gravy.
View 24 RepliesMy VW Golf TDI 2000 has 236,000 miles on it. The other day my husband jumped on the accelerator to merge onto the freeway, and it let out a huge black cloud of smoke. Wow, we thought. Weird. Impressive. Uh oh. Then we realized it was making HUGE diesel engine noises, which just got louder by the next day. Windows down, you can't hear yourself think. It also won't accelerate past 50 mph. We've spent so much money and time fixing this car. Would love to know what might be wrong this time. Just moved, no trusted mechanics who we can call. Might we have to donate it to public radio and just be done with it? Or something my husband can repair with the manual?

View 1 RepliesSo I have a 2002 GTI VR6 with the 24v BDF Engine. I have been having a problem with my belt squealing. It started after I replaced my water pump and crack pipe. While I was at it I replaced the belt tensioner and belt with a kit from ECS than had an aftermarket tensioner and a Conti drive belt(has 6 ribs). When starting the car up for the first time after doing the water pump I noticed the belt was squealing. It would only squeal when I gave it some good throttle.
After a few minutes it stopped squealing so I figured it was some coolant or something on the belt. Well its been a few weeks and it continues to squeal when I give it throttle, but only if the ac is on and it will only do it for a few minutes. After a few minutes of the car running or driving down the road it doesn't squeal anymore. I did make a long drive in the rain very shortly after replacing the belt and it was a really heavy rain storm. There was a lot of water on the road and my belt was squealing pretty much the whole drive if I had the ac on. I had to alternate ac on and off so I could keep the windows defogged.
After that experience I put on a set of engine splash guards from ECS. (note these guards were the ECS branded ones and were a terrible fit. Holes didn't line up with studs on bottom of frame and ended up taking the middle belly pan section out as it would hang down way too low even with the side covers connected to it.) That seemed to keep it from squealing while driving in the rain but it still squeals after first starting the cold engine with ac on.
So I'm also noticing my car occasionally makes a huge thud sound from time to time when I put it into two certain gears. From park to reverse it's not loud but there's a little noise, but from any gear into Drive it's sometimes a loud boom and the car shakes. My pops mentioned to me this is dangerous because of how the engine is moving underneath the hood when it happens. I just recently changed the dog bone mount, could it be the others? I'm ware that it's wise to change all 3 if you change one but I was on a budget & it was a lot worse before. Someone mentioned it might be my torque converter but I did some research & the two symptoms don't add up. And I'll add once more that this happens occasionally & not every time I switch to a different gear. What it may be?

View 3 RepliesI saw most bmw and mercedes cars all have a very small gap between tire and fender. My last two cars are Lexus, one 2011 IS and the other one is 2015 GS F sport.
The gap between is tire and fender for my 2011 IS is huge, which makes the car super ugly. Anyway, IS is a terrible car, so I sold the car even before the factory warranty expires. Then I thought the gap should be smaller and the car should sit lower if I have the F sport package. After I received the new GS F sport, I realize the gap is still huge, at least the gap size is way bigger than what's shown in Lexus' ad brochure.
why Lexus don't make its suspension as short as bmw or mercedes? Or even Audi. I had a Audi before two Lexus cars when I was still in graduate school. I dont remember I was bothered by the ugly looking of the tires.
I have a 2005 Trailblazer EXT 4wd. I have an issue with my front driveshaft. I have been hearing a squeaking in a tin can kind of sound. It is kind of hard to describe. I thought front brakes. Checked them and they are fine. I crawled up under the front end and took off the skid shield to look around. Since it was in 2wd I tried to turn the front driveshaft by hand and there was the sound. The driveshaft does turn and the sound was appearing to come from the front diff.
I thought "Oh Crap" is there fluid in the front diff. It would make sense if it was empty to make a sound like this. I unscrewed the filler hole and there was fluid. Then I decided to flush and fill the front diff with fresh fluid. It was pretty dark and I don't know when the last time the front diff was serviced. I took it out for test drive and still have the noise. What i am asking now is what to look for next? Like I said, when turning the front driveshaft by hand in 2wd it makes that sound.
By the way, 4wd works just fine in all modes.
I had the abs come on on dry pavement.. I changed the front ring gears,, Bought 2 new axles with ring gears all new on there.. fixed the issue.. Now i have a oil leak--transmission oil at the driver's side axle.. Is that the seal there in the trans that should be replaced? difficult? Why leak now if it wasn't leaking before..

There's a little crack near the base of the driver's seat. Is this normal? No. The carpet around both the driver's seat and the passenger's seat should be continuous and without gaps.
If there is a crack near the base of the driver's seat, this indicates that the seat base cover is not installed properly. This may have happened upon access to the vehicle's battery, which is found beneath the driver's seat and for which access requires removal of the driver's seat and surrounding facia.
