Got a weird "howling" (best description) noise coming from the rear. Only happens when letting off the gas. As soon as I start to accelerate it goes away. Let off the gas it comes back. Started Saturday.
View 11 RepliesI've recently noticed a howling sound coming from the rear end of my f150 from speeds of 45-60mph it goes away as soon as i get to 60mph and starts again very slightly at 80mph. I am sure its the pinion and ring from everything I have read online. a friend told me that it could be the pinion gear is worn out or it needs re shimmed or something. what parts should I look for to get this fixed? could it be a fluid issue? I dont want to have to spend much more on this truck....I love it but it seems like i find a new "noise" every week. Ive always been a chevy guy and to my surprise I REALLY like driving this truck and i want it to work out. What should i expect to pay for a repair like this? BTW it is and 04 FX4 with 84k on it.

View 14 RepliesI have a 74 f250 with a 67 352 and a 2150 carb. I have noticed that after driving the truck for a while and when its nice and hot, if I shut it off I hear a funny "howling" noise coming from the carb. It does it for about 5 seconds, then goes away. I rebuilt the carb and it still makes the noise. Also when I am driving it, when I have the pedal at a certain point, I can hear a lot of vacuum, I have checked for vacuum leaks, and there are none. The other question I have is, the 352 was out of a standard shift truck, mine is an auto, so I have nowhere to hook my tranny kick down rod to. How I can fix that, besides replacing the carb?
View 3 RepliesI have been getting increased noise coming from the back of my car for the past month. So I jacked up the car and spun the tires and heard grinding noises in the rear right. I have a 2012 ToyotaPrius plug-in with 33,000 miles. When driving the car around 40 miles an hour there would be a howling sound coming from the back of the car regardless of the type of pavement I was driving on.
So I took it to the dealer today and they had it up on the rack in about an hour later they came to me and said it needed new tires and it would be about $700 and that this was likely causing the noise. I said that there was no way that it was the tires so I went and showed the mechanic how old the sound was coming out of the back right wheel. He listened with his stethoscope on the wheel bearings and said that he did hear some noise in there but still thought it was the tires.
Have a Howling coming from my single gas tank, truck was sputtering now and then. Yesterday it died and would not start. Towed it home and then it started. Think its the fuel pump, Is it tough to change.... 2005 F250 Super Duty109K Miles...
View 14 RepliesI've got a 1997 Ford Expedition 5.4 with 200,000. So my rear differential leaks a few drops of fluid every time I drive it, looks like it's coming from the pinion seal. I've just been filling it topping it off with fluid.
Anyway, yesterday I got in it and started driving, I noticed a howling noise, and when I turned my rear tires started locking up. It was like that for about 5 miles until I got home, no matter which way you turned the tires would lock up.
I went under and topped off the differential with fluid again, and I pushed my parking brake in and released it. Got back in the truck and drove, and it was fine. What happened? I'm just worried it will happen again if I don't look more into it.
Have an issue with 2nd gear? Specifically, driving around at say 2-3k RPM around a slow driving area and have a howling. whining noise come from the vents/engine bay area. Its strange cause this only happens in 2nd gear, no other gear at the 2-3k rpm range makes this noise.
At first I thought it was the HPFP, but when I brought it in a VW tech he heard nothing. But its pretty freaking obvious with or without windows up and no music playing.
Should I take this into another dealership to get this checked out? Or is it normal.
FYI I do have a Injen Intake installed.

Sounds like it's coming from the front. I noticed a few months ago my inner passenger CV boot was cracked, put motor mount spacers in which should have hopefully brought that axle up to okay standards. My initial reaction is to say the howling is from that CV joint however it's very odd it only happens after 35 and when I'm not heavy accelerating or deaccelerating- only when holding the car at a constant speed.
This also came after doing the TDI 5th. I notice it a little bit after passing 35mph in 3rd but really can hear it in 4th/5th when the engine revs drop. Am I right in thinking CV boot? Or transmission internal?
I've had a funny noise from the rear of my car for quite a while now. It's a snap/crack sound that comes when the car is twisted along its length, like something is releasing tension or something. For not quite as long a while, I've been convinced that it's a matter of re-used stretch bolts (I'm not the one who re-used them though) on the both ends of the shocks back there.
I hear this sound (sometimes I can feel it as well) when I angle out of my driveway, which slopes down into the street beyond. Must angle out to avoid scraping the nose, and must TURN into the street anyway. Maybe under those conditions something shifts a bit. I have a UNIbrace; I know that's not got anything to do with it (I had it out for a bit to test).
Have new upper and lower rear damper bolts on hand. but probably worth it even if this makes no change. (Rule out the easy, inexpensive things first, they always say). My Bentley notes "spring must be removed before removing shock." I'm sure this is because the springs keep pressure on everything nearby and we don't want to release that suddenly by yanking the shock out. Or trying to.
If I have the rear of the car on stands and aim to do one side at a time, I can place the pad of my floor jack underneath the trailing arm back there, jack just a little to sort of "hold" the pressure on everything and remove/replace the bolts easily.
There is a humming noise coming from the right rear of my R, I'm going to guess that it is the furl pump running? If not I don't know what it could be, or if usually that loud...
Second, I was thinking of getting adjustable rear control arms. I was going to get just one set, to adjust the camber to 0.0 instead of the -1 or so that they usually ride.
Third, I was also contemplating getting upgraded motor, trans, and dogbone mount. I was told it would cut down on transmission noise while letting off the gas pedal whence driving.
When running and nothing is on (speakers/ac/ heater), I recently started to hear a sound under the rear seat closer to the passenger side. Not sure if its new, or if I just never noticed it before.
The best way I could describe it is as a hard drive or disk drive that is spinning or constantly seeking, but loud enough to hear at all times if I listen for it..
Its faint but annoying when idling or at low speed. The noise never changes pitch or frequency under power or or breaking.
So i have recently started hearing a noise coming from the rear of my car when i start it in the morning. When i fire my car up and sit in it for 10 maybe 20 seconds it starts making like a clunk/chug/thud/pumping sound? i fear its a sign that my fuel pump is going bad? After about another 30 seconds or so it goes away. It only happens when i fire it up in the morning probably because it has been sitting there for so long, but it won't do it lets say when i get out of work 8 hours later.
And another thing is i was looking for solutions for all the other creaks and cabin noises and sunroof rattles but the link is broken and I'm going nuts chasing these noises with minimal success. My passengers door/area sometimes does not make a noise for a few days but sometimes it sounds like there is a million turkeys chasing gerbils around for weeks!!
There is a clunking sound coming from my passengers door (i have taken off the panel and looked for loose connections with no success everything looked good). My headliner/sunroof chatters.
As described, It presents when the rain is heavy and I splash the undercarriage with big amounts of water, then this very strong siren-like noise comes from rear and underneath the car. Once the car stops or undercarriage is no longer being showered by water from the splashing on the road, it quiets and stops. While present, if I stop the car the noise goes as well.
Some of my searches on google have come to other car forums and they are all seem to be happening on AWD cars, some blame the exhaust is affected by the cooling down effect of the water.
So I'm driving to work and as I slow down to pay the toll I hear a weird grinding noise from the rear (sounds to be rear right) get out and check the crime scene. The plate is not rubbing on the rotor and there is nothing stuck between the rotor and the plate, so then i check the pad and they look pretty low, check the other side and looks the same, check the front and they r good n meaty. So can this mean I need new pads? The grinding noise goes and the car goes, the faster i go the faster the grinding noise goes, as i slow down it slows does..
Wanna make sure I get the problem right so I can fix it since I'm doing a Haldex oil service cause I also have the binding noise and then i gotta get the coolant flush done... hope all I need is pads... The noise goes away when I brake.
WRD Coilovers on my MK4 GTI. I finished my install this evening, and on my first test drive I noticed a knocking noise in the rear. I believe it is the springs sitting a little loose. The front of the car is sitting a bit lower than the rear, so I believe most of the weight is shifted towards the front, therefore making the springs kinda free float? I jacked her up after the drive and kinda gave the springs a wiggle and they have a tiny bit of play, enough to hear the spring kinda TING against the perch. I suppose I'm going to raise the front a bit to try and distribute the weight more evenly.
View 12 RepliesI am getting this weird clicking/ticking noise coming from the rear of the car. I might have to let someone drive the car and follow and listen for myself (but i dont like other people driving my car), but its definitely coming from the rotation of moving.
It is audible moving forwards and reverse. It speeds up as the speed increases. It comes from the passenger side and can hear it mostly from the sound bouncing off things from the outside. I cant feel it, its just an annoying sound. I still hear it while applying the brakes. Sort of sounds like flicking sound. Pads have plenty of life and changed my rotors about 20k ago.
I've read somewhere about brake pad spring busting but its still audible when the brakes are on so I don't think that's it.
Whenever I start my R32, I have some high pitch buzz noise coming from the rear, stay and never go away while even driving.
View 16 RepliesStarted up my car this morning and drove to the gas station. I had the car on low fuel, got the low fuel light last night but didn't have time to stop by a gas station to fill up. Anyways after I did finally fueled up this morning, I pulled out of the gas station and a very loud squeaking noise which sounds like metal on metal occurred. The noise is coming from the rear, but it's really loud, nothing I have ever heard before.
I will mention that I have Koni coilovers installed, tried to peak under the car and see if something broke or came loose but I was unable to see anything since I am sitting pretty low.
I live in Chicago and this morning was very cold. I am trying to figure out what my issue could be. I called up the dealer and he told me to drive it around for a bit and see if it goes away. Another guess would be that something got stuck between the rotor and the break pad. I have the stock break pads. What could it be?

Is this normal? i don't know where to search anymore to find where the rattle comes from...
so my r32 recently started making a nasty popping noise. the sound seems to either be coming from something in the rear end or drive shaft. not sure why it happened. i went on a 2 hour trip. got there parked it. aired it down (bags) but then when i came back and when to drive it again. it all of a sudden it started making a horrible popping noise. i thought it was the front wheel bearing going out since i knew it need to be replaced but i did that today and its still making the noise.
The noise sound just like a RWD car with a welded diff when it turns. kinda has that locked rear end hop popping noise. i lifted the whole car off the ground and put it in first to let the tires spin in the air but of course theres no weight on them so it doesn't make any noise. i'm really stumped on what it could be. im going to take the driveshaft off and see if it still dose it. then i know its for sure in the rear end. What it could be?
