My car does not appear to have a fuel leak in the way I have been reading about the fuel tank issue... but i smelled fuel in the exhaust this morning, pretty strong or i wouldn't have given it much thought...
View 6 RepliesI've got an awd 1.8t and ever since I did my 3" downpipe and cat delete I've had an oil smell both inside my car and from my exhaust. I thought at first maybe it was the valve cover gasket which I did last summer, but it looks to be fine. Also it does smoke out of my exhaust sometimes, but a buddy told me if it was my turbo seals my oil level would reflect the seals being gone, which the oil level hasn't moved. What else could it be? Do I just need to put a cat backin?

View 12 RepliesI've had my car for 6 months and have noticed that when I start my car with the vent on blowing air I can smell exhaust fumes. It doesn't seem to happen every time and if I start the car with the air off I don't smell anything. I can turn the air on after ten minutes of driving and the smell is there at first then seems to go away, either that or I get used to the smell. My closest dealership is 60 miles away
View 4 RepliesI have a 87 F250 with a 302. Every time I drive it I smell like exhaust. Doesn't matter how short or long the trip, but the longer the trip the stronger the smell when you get out. I found 1 loose manifold bolt and tightend it, but no difference.
View 13 RepliesThe truck in question is a 93 F-150 X/cab 4x4, has 5.0 5spd. So yesterday i replaced my exhaust with pre made magnaflow "y" pipe/cat with a flow master 44 then new pipe all the way out. When i start the truck up this morning to let it warm up a little it started to give off a funny smell almost like brakes/electric burning smell. I was wondering if this is common for new pipes to burn off any oils that may have collected on them from the factory. I look under the truck and nothing is touching the exhaust, but the shiny new pipe is starting to change colors. So do you think it will go away in a short time? I have to an appointment about 30 miles away on the freeway think this will burn off?. BTW there was no smell prior to the exhaust change.
View 1 RepliesI have a 99 Passat wagon. After I got hit in the left rear quarter panel, I started detecting exhaust smell in the car when I opened the windows or sun roof. The exhaust pipe did not get damaged, but neither the body shop nor the regular shop could detect anything out of the ordinary. My theory is that the new bumper cover may be a little different than the one that was on there and does not let the gasses flow past the bumper the way it was before I got hit.
View 1 RepliesI just got my 2000 Passat back from the body shop. I rear-ended an SUV about a month ago and had my hood, front bumper, left headlight, A/C compressor, and radiator replaced.
HOWEVER, now when I let 'fresh air' into the cabin, I smell a strong exhaust smell. When I push the 'recycle air' button, the smell goes away. This leads me to think that somehow my exhaust pipe was cracked/damaged in the collision and is now spewing exhaust gas into the engine compartment - and thus when I allow fresh air (front the engine compartment) into the cabin...I am getting toxic exhaust blown in my face!
Where should I look for signs of an exhaust leak and is there an easy 'trick' to find the leak?
I have a 2003 SC430 with 170,000 miles on the odo. It runs great, but the exhaust smell is killing me. I'm pretty sure it's normal for an 11 year old car, but I want to eliminate it.
Do you know what part or part(s) I might be able to replace to eliminate the foul smell?
From time to time, i get some exhaust smoke smell in the car, when driving slow or standing in a queue.
90% of the time everything it's perfect, but at a sudden moment, the rpm is rising with 50 or so, the instant consumption rises from let's say 1.4l/h to 1.8-2.0l/h when in gear and standing, i get a small vibration and then the exhaust smell appears.
If i'm closing the recirculation, then no more smell.
After 15-20 min, everything get back as it use to be, 1.4l/h consumption, no vibrations no smells no nothing.
This i think happens when the dpf is cleaning and i cought with vcds of a friend when it happened and the exhaust temp was 350 celsius or something. Usually is 200 degrees celsius, so it is a dpf regeneration. Also the car is running smoother after this.
Still..the smoke smell... it's annoying and quite strong. There is no sign of smoke from the exhaust pipes, flexible pipe or whatever. There is no sign at all anywhere.
I have a small theory but i don't know from where to start. Usually the catalyst temp is 200 degrees. When it's 350, it expanding more, or at least the cracks are expanding and smoke+smell is from there...but there is no sign anywhere.
So i just got back into town after not driving her for about a week, started her up(barely), and saw engine light. While on the engine putters and sounds bad. The exhaust smells like gas. I have done no Mods except for APR stage one and a K & N air filter. Is it misfiring? Is my software bad?

I called the dealer and as it turns out, this is a common problem with this model. A hose has to be replaced on the exhaust system.
I knew I was smelling exhaust and also knew there was a problem with the car/exhaust!
I am having an issue with exhaust coming from somewhere on top of the engine. I've been smelling it on start up for a couple of months and thought it was a rear window or door seal.
Well, with this (insert long string of expletives here) cold weather, I was having starting issues. Turns out all my battery terminals were loose-ish and a jump would get me going. Anyway, yesterday while getting a jump, once it started I noticed exhaust spouting from the top of the engine somewhere. With the engine fan and the wind, it was impossible to figure out where exactly it was coming from.
It has the stock boots on it (ordering from RR today) and the rest is in my sig. Stay warm! I did service the battery cables/terminals last night and made sure the batteries are charged. Im hoping for the best after work today.
After I start the car, warm up a bit then drive, there are exhaust fumes that get into the cabin as you can smell them.
It's happening more often now. I have spoken to my Phaeton tech who said that the car has a sensor that goes off and shuts down external air if it notices exhaust uses getting in.
I have been hearing a little bit of road noise on the driver side so I'm thinking some fumes are coming in from the door seal (although it looks fine).
Sometimes it's bad enough that you have to open the windows or you will feel sick. It passes within 5 minutes or so and the car is fine after that. It only happens right after ignition for a few minutes.
Lately I've noticed an exhaust smell coming into the car when idling. Could it be an gasket. Car doesn't sound different at all or anything.
View 2 RepliesI'm going to take my Elantra in to get it checked. My Elantra is a 2013, got it in March. Over the last few weeks, I would say, on 4 days or so there has been a STRONG exhaust smell. No smoke, nothing else but a smell. If I'm pulling into the garage with no idling, just pull in and park, I get out and the smell in the garage is very strong. I have to leave the garage open for at least an hour if not more to air it out. The cab ends up having a light smell inside the next day still.
If I'm parking outside when I get out I can still smell it, but not quite as strong, because I'm not in an enclosed area. I don't think it's an exhaust manifold leak, because I don't hear the popping. My best guess is it would be in the tail pipe area pre-catalytic converter, or in the catalytic converter if it is in fact an exhaust leak.
I have a 2001 Buick Century, ~120,000 miles that a couple months ago started smelling like gas or exhaust+gas when the heat was turned on. I've changed the cabin air filter. I don't know how much that could have ever worked. I couldn't find a gas leak in the engine compartment, but I didn't give it a really close inspection. Where should I check for the most likely leak? Or could it be more of a problem with the cabin air intake?

And car doesn't smell like fuel when I'm driving, only if I leave the car running for a while and it sits there does this smell begin to build up.
I drive a 2007 Toyota 4Runner. Recently the weather has been nice enough to drive with the windows open. I've noticed a very strong ammonia smell from the exhaust - so strong at times, that I have to roll up the windows and use the a/c. I use Shell gas with no ethanol, but it has a nitrogen additive. Is it the gas I'm using, or is there something wrong with the vehicle? It's definitely ammonia, and I can only smell it while I'm driving.
View 12 RepliesI have a 2009 nissan rogue that when driven for 30 minutes or more with the ac on leaves my clothing smelling like exhaust (faint smell). I have had the dealership look at the car and they cannot find anything. We have replaced the interior cabin air filter and I still find the smell. this is not something that I notice while driving until I have been in the car for 30 or so minutes. My wife also notices the smell in her clothes after driving and now won't drive the Nissan. We are running the car with maximum AC turned on with the air recirculation button on as well. SO, theoretically, no outside air should be getting in but it still seems like our clothes smell like we have been in a traffic jam with the windows down after 30 minutes of driving.
