Golf V R32 :: Engine Clatter / Rasp Sound From Back
Sep 8, 2008
I took off my muffler this weekend to see if I could make the rasp sound I get from the back disappear. I managed to make some of it go away by manipulating the heat shielding. However today its been raining all day.. and I have no noise at all.. full throttle.. nope.
Windows open and hammering the gas, even shifting I don't hear it. I remember in my 04 R when it rained the exhaust would have a completely different tone. I wonder why in the rain today in my MKV, I cant hear any engine rattle at all?? strange. Will report back if I hear it tomorrow, or when its not raining.

I have done the flapper mod. My exhaust has a nasty rasp on acceleration. I have a buddy with a MkIV R32 and his car sounds MUCH better than mine with no rasp.

I now have an annoying "clatter" sound coming from my supercharger cone housing ONLY when the car is in gear and at idle (i.e.,: stop light,etc.).. Had a new serpentine belt replaced 6 months ago with new water pump.114K miles, great condition otherwise.

My truck will intermittently sound like an old 7.3 clattering away. It's done this for some time now. If I accelerate briskly it'll quiet down. When I first got it (used) it was quiet as a church mouse. It seems to normally be during the 1st 20min or so of a run. Weather and fuel doesn't seem to be a factor nor does it matter whether I have additive in the tank or not. My truck is a May '10 build 2011 with about 60k miles on it now.
Is this normal? Same 7.3 noise from the 6.7?

It seems that my 09 F150 has developed a troubling noise... I'm looking for any cam phaser. I'm at 116,712mi. 5.4L motor of course.
On cold start, I hear about 2 seconds of "clatter" - sounds like something is "loose" on top of the motor. At hot idle, I hear the classic "diesel" idle, indicative of the cam phaser issue. In gear, the rattle intensifies and is very noticeable around 1000RPM.
Other than the noises, the truck runs great - like new.
Here's a video: [URL] ....
Under hood, under hood close up, driver's wheel well, interior, then interior in gear. You'll need to crank the volume to hear the last two.
Best I can tell, this is not an exhaust manifold issue. So, what say you? Cam phasers?

Started my 2010 gen 3 Prius 3 the other day and got a bunch of what I thought was engine clatter and the check engine light came on.
The next time I started it, no noise. Anyways brought it to dealer and they diagnosed it and ordered a new manifold.
The next day when the part arrived, I brought in the car. Talked to the mechanic, a great guy, and he explained what happened. Apparently, the clatter is actually the springs rattling in the clutch mechanism of the starter motor/electric motor and not the valves like I thought.

I have a 2003 Subaru Forester XS, bought it new, has almost 100,000 miles. Only take it to the dealer. Regular oil changes, and routine maintenance. Around 65-70,000 miles, I began to hear a sound like a playing card against a bicycle wheel in colder temps only. Dealer called it 'piston clatter' and not to worry about it. So I didn't. Over the years it has become a year around sound, even worse in colder temps. I've been afraid to drive it out of town on the interstate or highways because at times the engine sounds as if it's going to jump out of the car. I wrote to Subaru corporate, only to be referred back to the dealer, who again, will only tell me it's 'piston clatter'. I have used fuel additives, and a tank of premium every now and then. Still makes the same sound.

Our 2005 V8 makes an awful noise under acceleration. I think it sounds like a valve clatter, but I think I remember reading it was some part in the exhaust making the noise. I've tried all fuel options to see if it was related to what OCT fuel.
I brought it in for service (5 recalls, nice) and they didn't hear it (of course) until I took them for a ride. The tech said he remembered earlier models having some issue.
I don't buy that it's "Normal" because I don't hear other 4.2 V8s making that noise, and I sure has hell don't think a 45K SUV should sound like somethings broke when it revs past 4K.

I just bought a tranny (02J) and I'm about to pull mine out but I'm scared to pull it off just to find out that my clutch is fried. I was at a light, stepped on the clutch, put it in first release the clutch and gave it gas like a normal person would and a bang and clatter noise occurred, I pulled over and when I stepped back on the clutch, the noise went away, released it and the noise came right back. its like clattering metal keys every time that I release the clutch, even in neutral. So eventually I put it in second and it drove normally and then got it to my friends house down the block and now its sitting there.
1.8t 2002 golf 5 speed btw.

I have a 2002 Camry V6. It has about 170,000 m on it. When you start the engine, of course it starts at a high idle speed and every time. And, every time there was the ominous clatter of dry engine (probably rod bearings if i had to guess) for a few seconds until there was oil pressure. Probably not too harmful, but it was one of those things that bothers you?! I'm guessing I am not the only one with this happening so that's why I made this post.
The older the engine got the more this bothered me. It's probably "normal", and if you emailed or called Toyota I'm guessing that's what a tech would tell you, but still...to get rid of this clatter I tried every additive there is. Slick 50, Duralube, Marvel Mystery oil (In my view probably useful only for cleaning-do not use in the gas!) STP. NOT ONE of these had the slightest effect on the clatter.
Then I finally tried Lucas oil additive at an oil change. This stuff claims to stick to the metal inside the engine and protect it during a dry start. Well it DOES do what it claims to do! (This is as rare as chicken teeth in the market of automotive products). No more clatter!

My 2007 V6 Sonata Has a very loud clatter when I start it. It will last anywhere from 2-5 seconds then it usually goes away. It almost sounds like a baseball card hitting the spokes of a bicycle. It's within warranty and last time I took it to the dealer they first claimed they couldn't hear it. Then they changed their story and said that it was the belts warming up, and they said this is a perfectly normal sound for Hyundais to make. My fiance's family has owned 3 Hyundais and they have never had such noise come from any of there vehicles. Both of my other cars never sound like this.

I've got a 1997 Honda CRV. Recently when you start it up in the morning there is a terrible clatter coming from the engine. Yet, once the car warms up, the clatter totally subsides and the car runs and drives normally. Turn the car off and then start it again, the clatter comes back - but then in a minute or so the clatter is gone and all is well. I've checked the fan area and belts - nothing is caught in there. Seems like the sound is coming more from the engine. Can't figure it out. By the way - did I mention that the car now has 338,000 miles on the odometer? Other than that, the car runs fine. Is it time to give up the ghost?

I have a 2007 GS350 that seems to "clatter" when I start the engine after it's been sitting for awhile. The clatter only lasts a couple of seconds but it's annoying....sounds like metal on metal. It does not happen when engine is cold or should I say first thing in the morning. It happens after the car has been driven, sat for a few hours and then the clatter occurs when I start the engine. This started a couple of weeks ago....I have 29,000 miles on it.
Took it to the dealer last week, the service rep told us that this is somewhat common and is due to the high pressure direct injection system on this particular engine. He also said this started when they switched from the GS300 to GS350. I'm wondering why it never happened before. The service rep said there's nothing they can do about relatively new Lexus with relatively low miles.
I've always used premium gasoline, got all my oil changes and maintenance done at the Lexus dealership thus far.

I've got a 2003 f150 with the 5.4 and 128,000 miles with an engine tick. Its not an exhaust leak I know that for sure. It has came up in the last 20,000 miles. I've used motorcraft 5 20 w/ motorcraft filter. I've tried a kreen engine treatment with no change. Heres the description/syptoms:
-Slight clatter for 2-3 seconds upon cold startup (happens very rarely)
-top end ticking that is loudest and most noticable when warm (quieter when motors cold)
-not timing chains/tensioners etc because the noise is coming from the top end and most noticeable on the passenger side.
-at idle the tick is present-when you rev at idle, the noise goes away.
-Driving (or having the engine under any load for that matter) the noise gets louder.
-Anytime I accelerate, tow/haul, go up an incline the noise gets worse
-Sounds like a "whirring" sound from within the dash.
With all that said I am thinking the lash adjusters are getting noisy. I had a certified gm tech that has 40 yrs mechanic experience under his belt and builds prostreet muscle cars on the side look at it. He listened to it to it and that was his diagnosis as well as its not that bad so just live with it. The noise at idle doesn't bother me, its when im driving with the windows down. The noise drives me crazy and is a little annoying to me.
Heres a link to a video of the sound and keep in mind it is much louder now : Triton engine noise/tick - YouTube

There is a noticeable whining sound coming from the back of my car. I searched and the closest thread I could find talks about whining at speed, but this is happening even at idle. From outside the car it is much louder. It goes away sometimes, but comes back pretty quickly. I restarted the car at a red light and the noise stopped, but by the next light it was back. Seems to be happening at speed, too, although that's harder to hear over the sound of the car.
Pulled codes, and the code P310b keeps coming back, even after cleared. The car has had a dead battery for probably the last 6 weeks, and was restarted two days ago, maybe 100-150 miles since restart, plenty of warm up and cool down cycles, but the code keeps coming back. I never noticed the sound before I let the car sit, and I didn't notice it yesterday while I was driving it around (although maybe I just had the music too loud???)
APR Stage 3, APR LPFP.
1- Does is sound like this could be the low pressure fuel pump?
2- Do I need to be concerned?

2008 r32. First time i opened it up on the highway, noticed a weird electronic whine under the back seat as soon as we slowed down that wont go away. It changes pitch when you shift and sounds like a weird electronic sys trying to mimic an exhaust leak. Id think fuel pump, but seems louder on the left side (fuel flap on right). Since i talked her into it and i apparently caused this noise, shes gonna kick my ass if I don't fix it. Its somewhat warrantied, so toss out whatever, I am not scared to go to the dealer with 500 things i want them to look at, but i need to know if their diagnosis is correct or total crap. Ive never dealt w 4motion (its incredible) and my newest dub is also a vr6, but its a 92.

I have no water inside the car or leaking atleast that I can find. But when im parking the car, and navigating into my spot; or on an incline or decline or come to a stop i hear swishing coming from the back of the car, like water in a bath tub. Would think its the gas tank but that seems odd, as i never heard that noise in any of my other dubs.. Heard this noise or think maybe water is trapped somewhere. I am really not diggin the fact that my dealer is gonna take the car apart.

When I accelerate as the car is going to shift, there is a weird noise coming from the back area. It sounds as if it were a bunch of walnut shells being crushed and swished in a coffee can. Is that something that sounds like it could be normal? Today was the first time I drove with the windows down and heard it. I'm wondering if it has always been there... it sounds very loud though. It echos very loudly back into the car from nearby things as I drive by... It sounds to me a lot like when you would take a wind up toy past it's point were you weren't supposed to...

I purchased my .:R last summer with just over 100k miles on it. Two prior owners, car was fully stock and in great condition except for one thing:
Humming/vibration ("brrrrr" sound) coming from the back of the car when turning at a slow speed with the wheel fully cranked, e.g. moving out of a parking spot. It only occurs when moving, and with the wheel fully or almost fully turned in one direction.
The guy I purchased it from brought it to a local VW dealership when he noticed this and they (obviously) did not find anything wrong with the car, and blamed it on the tire wear.
So I changed all four tires. Still made the noise.
Haldex oil had been changed by the original owner but not by the second owner (who owned the car for two years prior to my purchase). So I had the Haldex oil changed and my mechanic said it was dirty AND at a low level, and might be the source of this problem. The noise did diminish for a bit, but it is still present.
So, I'm afraid my transmission or differential are fried from running on too little oil. It does not affect anything but it is definitely worrying me.
