Getting a winding noise from the front end. I can hear it when I turn and at low speeds. Is it time for bearings?? I also need an alignment beacuse the car is pulling hard to the right!
View 15 RepliesI am brand new to the forum. Just got a 2008 prius from a small father-son dealership and am getting used to the new sounds (or lack thereof) under the hood. I am getting a " winding down" kind of noise from in front of the driver after I turn the car off. it does not happen unless I have driven at least a short distance: i cant just run it in the driveway and then shut down and hear it. Is this normal, and what might it be?
View 6 RepliesI am a fairly new Prius owner. I have noticed that when I get on the brake, I will hear a sort of winding up noise, or a noise like a very small motor running for just a few seconds. It seems to happen every time I first get on the breaks when moving at a speed above 25 mph, and I can interrupt it if I take my foot off the brake. I kind of thought maybe it was something to do with the regen brake system, but I wanted to make sure it's not an indication of an issue.
View 5 RepliesFriday when driving home I kept hearing a weird sound from the right rear that sound like another engine running while going 30 to 70 MPH. The noice sounded like something being winding up and down. Take your foot off the accelerator and the noise was still there. Not sure if its the Tranny or Differental or some bearing.
Took it by the dealer on Saturday and the Service writer could not figure it out. They plan on looking it over on Monday or Tuesday. What I might find on strange noise. The car just turned 47,000 miles so its still under warranty.
Should I hear my Touareg wind down everytime I shut it off? Almost sounds like an airplane coming to a stop but its not that loud.
View 3 RepliesWhat this noise is, still getting used to having axles and such in the rear as well. Its a rubbing / winding sound coming from the rear, and seems to only make noise when the clutch is engaged / in gear and accelerating. It stops (probably from the # of rotations making it hard to hear) around 15-20 mph. It starts slow and of course increases with speed. Its not a nasty dead-wheel-bearing sound, just a rub. Car has H&R coils, stock wheels no spacers, haldex blue, stock exhaust w/ resonator delete and flapper mod. (Trying to think of any mods in that area that could change the cars dynamic) ...

View 1 RepliesI just hit 100k and I will be taking my 06' in for timing belt soon. I just noticed a weird winding up sound from the engine during idle and lower rpm, I can't hear it with the engine running on the road, except for slower speeds. Is that being a belt or tensioner or something? Also, I have heard a faint clicking sound at idle when I am in a drive through and the sound bounces off of the brick walls next to me. It's not a ticking exhaust leak, more of a click, is that a water pump?
View 14 RepliesToday I think something went wrong with my starter. When I go to start the sante fe the starter makes a winding noise. Battery tested good and I ensured that the ground was clean and making a good connection.
I read about a TSB relating to a starter arm kit. I can't seem to find a part code or any info on the 2010 specifically having this issue.
Car lost power and has a winding noise when trying to start.It does make any weird YOUR MOTOR IS SCREWED noises or losing any fluids and everything power wise works as it should.I thought the starter went bad,with the winding noise,but doesn't explaining the car just shutting off while driving.
View 17 RepliesI have a 2014 Sonata GLS. This has happened 3 times so far. I often drive around looking at houses for sale etc. Sometimes I drive for 1 to 2 hours, usually low speeds under 20 to 30 mph.
So I come to a stop, start to accelerate and notice my transmission is having trouble engaging, I liken it to transmission slip, like winding up to get the vehicle to move. I also notice my dash gear indicator light is blank. No "D" in the display box, just empty. I stop at a safe spot, put the vehicle in park.
It will not release from park when I try to shift into gear again. I decided turn the vehicle off, re-start the car, and all is well, tranny works, dash indicator is back and all is good.
I drive the vehicle mostly at highway speeds to/from work with no issues. Each time this has happened its after driving at that low speed for at least an hour and a half or more. I haven't taken it to dealer yet.
For the last few weeks my car has been making a winding sound at highway speeds. It sounds as if it is winding out at high rpms but it isn't. When I let off the gas, the sound doesn't decrease until the car begins to slow significantly. It also seems not to make the sound if I am going around a right hand curve. The car is a 2005 5-speed mazda 3.
What the problem might be? And is it safe to drive 600 miles back home before having it checked out. With the holiday, I don't have many options.
got the 4.6, AC clutch is just winding like crazy, so Im going to do a cheap fix and jus bypass the pully. Now do I need to remove the compressor or can I just get a belt for a 4.6 without AC and just not use it?
View 1 RepliesYesterday i had taken my front grill off, 08 R32 including the bottom sections where fogs would otherwise be since you have to.... Anyway, i did all that to get my euro plate secured on my grille. Now I'm hearing a rattling noise when I go over a rough surface or descent sized bump. Everything with the grill is clipped and bolted back in tightly, any other things that could be causing this?

View 8 RepliesI have these in 225/40R-18 on VW Goal rims (MkVI GTi). Last month I hit a nice size pot hole and put a very small bend in the outer lip of the right front rim. No mark on the rim, so the tire took the hit. Had a peak inside and the tire was bruised pretty good. Around this same time I noticed a faint humming that seemed to be coming from the front. Figured an inner ply shifted so I replaced that single tire (10,000 on the others).
So the humming is still there and getting a little louder. I've rotated a couple times but the sound is the same. Non-distinct location; seems like it could be coming from all 4 corners.
I have a noise like a broken spring, changed strut insert, top mount, checked for loose brake shield and pads. Removed both sway bar links. [URL] .....
View 3 RepliesSo I noticed while doing some cleaning under the hood today that something was humming or buzzing from the front of the motor. I also noticed that whatever it was was making my oil dipstick vibrate. Is this normal because I just left somewhere and the car had a little issue getting started. I had the battery and alternator tested on the way home and they are fine.

A few observations:
- I would say it is coming from the belt on the left side, but I can't narrow it down
- It doesn't sound like the hamster wheel sounds I've seen in the archives, but I haven't ruled it out
- It doesn't change when the clutch is depressed
- It tends to go away after a 30+ minute drive
Today when I took my car out as I was turning in the parking lot I started turning right and all the sudden a heard a huge pop from the right front end. It almost sounded like I had ran over something and kicked it up to the fender but I was only going like 3mph. I stopped in a parking spot and when I turned it to the left it made another pop but not as loud.
I looked under at the suspension and didn't see anything visibly loose so I kept going. Now when driving and I hit a small bump I hear a little rattle from the right front. There was no symptoms leading up to this, it was just sitting there and it did it the first thing as I was leaving today, the front end wasn't rattling at all before.
The sound it makes sounds like a spring being released so I was thinking it might have been the strut bearing or maybe the strut is just bad. I haven't actually had to work on the suspension for the .:R so its all new to me.
