View 22 RepliesHow to identify this noise? I'm guessing water pump or timing chain tensioner but not sure.
View 7 RepliesMy wife and I have a 2002 Golf, Manual transmission, 2.0L, L4, 8V with 178xxx ODO.
About a year ago I started hearing a very faint squeal that would always squeal, regardless of A/C use, no power loss is felt, in fact, the A/C works great and the car runs perfectly. But after a year of driving and 1 big road trip, the sound is now unbearable.
I recently replaced the alternator, belt tensioner, and threw on a new belt, but still, the squeal persists. After holding a rubber hose to my ear and moving through each accessory pulley with the other end of the hose, like a ghetto stethoscope, I know that it is definitely coming from the A/C compressor pulley.
I found a video on the Youtube that perfectly catches the same squeal (not my car, not my video) [URL]....
Since the A/C compressor has a clutch, and the outer pulley is constantly spinning with the serpentine and there is no noticeable difference in the noise whether I am using the A/C or not, I think that the outer bearings on that clutch need to be replaced.
Should I just replace the whole clutch and any good DIY threads on this? I've looked but all I can find is a DIY for a TDI, which I don't know if it's the same compressor or not.
I had the car checked for an odd noise that I've been noticing once the engine is warm. Almost like a humming or low pitch squealing. It's noticeable at idle and low speed from inside and outside the car. Very annoying considering the thing is a month old. Any way, I spent nearly 4 hours waiting and they came up with no solutions. Not a clue, a guess, nothing. The car is still driving normally and i needed it for tomorrow so I didn't keep it over as they suggested. The service manager said he hasn't seen anything like it, but also admitted he knew very little about the '10s. great.
View 10 RepliesSo over the past view days I have been hearing some sort of light squealing noise coming from my car during my daily commute. At first I though it was wind noise or something stuck in the grill of the bumper. When I looked the car over this morning, I didn't see any plastic or something caught in the grill to be causing the noise. Then I thought maybe its my wheels, brakes, or rotors but found out it wasn't that after hearing the noise stopped at a stop light. I did a few revs and heard slight squeal coming from the engine bay.
So I don't really know what to look for now. The sound is fairly faint, but a high pitch squeal.
Ive got 20K miles on my car now and I noticed a weird noise in the engine bay at certain rpm's. Between 1800 to 2300, parked or driving. It sounds like a bad bearing, like when you spin a bearing with compressed air it squeals. So i decided to investigate this further.
What Ive found is that the top timing belt small roller bearing is the culprit.
My friend with the same car has the same noise with the same mileage!
My cars engine is all stock except for the VWR air filter and Forge DV.
My 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8T just started doing this... I am not hearing the normal Turbo whistling noise when I give it a lot of gas, however I now hear a squealing noise. Sounds similar to a loose belt kinda whining/squealing. I do not hear this at any other time, only when accelerating quickly.
View 4 RepliesSo I drove my car (2000 vw golf tdi auto) to work fine. When I started it to drive home, it squealed and then all of a sudden stopped squealing so I popped my hood and looked and the belt can fit 2 fingers under it. Is there anything I can check diagnose this? I hear it could b a tensioner pulley.

Belt squeal but when I have clutch pushed in no noticeable noise.Abs kicks in at low speed stops. I sprayed the belts with dressing noise went away momentarily actually sounded like it could have killed it almost. Right now I have the and fuse pulled to just get me by.
My R has 56k on it. it sat for just over a year and a half and i just got it back on the road a week ago. Two days ago i started it to pull it on my rack and change the oil and it was making a rattling/chattering noise. The noise was going away when i pushed the clutch in but not anymore and the noise goes away in the higher rpm's. on the way home it threw a code and the check engine light came on and with throttle it started making an awful squealing noise. I am kinda scared to drive it.... I guess ill start pulling the motor, transmission or both tomorrow...
View 2 RepliesI have a squealing noise that seems to be coming from under the car when going 25MPH or over. It doesn't seem to vary with the rpms of the motor or how fast I'm going - it's either on or off with out much variation in pitch. Sounds like a dry bearing, but it's baffling as it will happen every time I drive for a few days, then will inexplicably go silent for a while.
View 6 RepliesWell I've had it with the low mph squealing of my brakes. I'm currently running the brembo 2bk 4 piston set up. I'm assuming it has race pads since it only squeals at low speeds. The pads are still good btw.
I do not track the car so I was thinking something in the middle pad wise. I was looking at the hawk hps street pads(they seem great with no noise) or the stoptech brake pads(pretty much the same as the hawks). They both will fit my brake setup.
My brakes will not stop squealing and it is driving me nuts. I have the stock pads / rotors with 12k miles and three track days. To try and get ride of the noise I have:
- pulled wheels and cleaned all dust from wheels and calipers
- I have the TyrolSport caliper stiffening kit and pulled and greased front bolts
- re-bed in the pads and rotors
- when I had the wheels off and working on caliper bolts the pads looked like there was plenty of material left
I know people have complained about stock setup making noise in cold weather, but that cannot be the case here. It lonely happens at low speeds. What am I missing to get rid of the noise?
My daughters 96 cav has a bad squeal coming from serpintine belt. I tried belt dressing and it threw the belt. I didn't notice any cracks/dry rotting on belt. I put the belt back on but it is still squealing.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2005 SC430. When I start it up it makes a squealing noise, and the more I accelerate, the more it squeals. I read through this entire thread: [URL] ....
I did as PearlPower suggested and sprayed it with some WD-40 (the top center pulley area) and the noise stopped, but not for very long. Think I need a new belt.
My Variant (2007, 48K miles) is experiencing a squealing noise during cold morning (below 45F) start ups? AC always off at start up and the noise goes away once the engine is warmed up. I brought it to the dealer last week and after leaving the car over night they told me the noise can't be duplicated which is a total BS. [URL].....................................
View 12 RepliesI am trying to get a sense on how prevalent this issue is. Getting brake noise when stopping? It is progressively getting worse, and my Treg has been in 4 times for that issue alone. My dealership, i think has sort of given up. They tried "grinding" the edges down as suggested by VWoA, no go...
View 24 RepliesSquealing noise when in reverse, mainly noise coming from front passenger. What it is?
View 7 RepliesMy Phaeton 2004 3.2 V6 makes a really bad squealing noise when they are warm and the car is just coming to a stop, even if I am only braking slowly. Had VW check the brakes and all they did was to take out the pads, clean them and replace them. Then had the rear discs and pads replaced and it still occasionally does this. Is there something I am missing?????? Who wants to drive a superb car like this and have everyone look at it for the wrong reasons!! Wheel Bolt Torque Specifications (TOC)...
View 19 RepliesI have a 04 BMW Z4, and noticed a squealing noise when I accelerate slowly.
View 3 RepliesI've had the Treg for about 3.5 months now and at about 1500 miles I started to have intermittent squealing from the brakes. Now at 2300 its constant. I brought it to the dealer and of course all I get is the usual BS they feed everyone... brake pads today don't use asbestos and so the metal squeaks...blah, blah... total crap. No OEM brakes should squeal (let alone on a $40k vehicle) and its never been a problem with other cars with original pads. Is there a solution?
