View 3 RepliesI've got smoke coming out of my oil dipstick tube. 1996 Mercury Mystique 2.0L automatic, 62000 miles. I noticed a burning oil smell after a short (10 mile) drive, and checked the oil when I got home. A few wisps of smoke smelling of burning oil came out of the dipstick tube when I removed the stick. I was just curious how worried I should be about this.
As far as I can tell, my cooling system works (radiator hoses are warm, good hot air from the vents, thermostat and coolant recently replaced, hoses inspected, no leaks) and I'm not thinking the burnt oil is caused by overheating. There hasn't been any noticeable oil consumption, and I'm pretty diligent about checking the oil on this old car. Oil changes every 3000 miles since I've owned the car; dealer performed scheduled maintenance for the old owners.
Here's my thinking: a worn piston ring allowing oil to be burnt and then sucked back through into the crankcase. When I changed my spark plugs, I did notice an oily residue on one of the plugs (cylinder #1), which also leads me towards a piston ring diagnosis (though I was hoping it was a valve seal causing the oily spark plug, or even a spark plug seal). Do a wet compression test is in order, or should I go ahead and get a leakdown test? I am going to buy a compression tester, but I do not have an air compressor to use with the leakdown tester; I'd have to take it to a shop.
I do need to service the PCV system (and would have done it today, but the parts hadn't arrived at the store) -- would a PCV problem cause the oil to burn, though?
I have a 93 Volvo 850 N/A, there is white smoke coming out of the dipstick tube, not alot but enough, also there's like a white/ yellow foam on the dipstick tube, but the coolant has not changed, so im assuming its not a headgasket. I have cleaned out most of the vacuum lines and flame trap but cant find the pvc valve.

View 2 RepliesStarted my car early in the morning, nothing happened. I paused thinking the battery was shot, but then realized that there was smoke coming out of my fender... I jumped out of the car, disconnected the battery terminals and rushed over to see what the hell was on fire/smoking. I popped the hood expecting the engine bay to be engulfed in flames, but to find it was coming out of the inner fender. I looked down by the wheel and the brake line to the caliper was on fire.. I put the fire out and sat there with zero idea on what happened.
View 13 RepliesI bought this 2003 gti in July, noticed a little smoke coming out near the airbox but the motor had been cleaned recently so I assumed it was whatever they used cleaning it just burning off.
Today, installing an air filter, I see that there is a rubber hose dry rotted with smoke coming from it. I don't know what it goes to or how to replace it. The car drives fine. I do have CEL on for a coolant system fault, but all fluids are level it's not overheating and it doesn't seem to be losing any power.
I own a 03 mk4 jetta 2.0 I revved her up to 5000 rpm coming onto traffic. Drove about a mile or so when I noticed the temp going up. Pulled over and checked all my fluid levels and looked under for any leaks. Got back in the car turned it on and saw temp was normal again. I drove not even a quarter of a mile when I saw smoke coming out the rear of the car. Let the gas pedal go and when I did that the car started downshifting. Its an automatic. When it got down to the last gear the battery, check engine light, and epc light came on and car cut off. Cruised until I could stop somewhere safe on neutral. When I completely stopped I tried cranking but no crank. When I turn the key, lights and everything is good. Just no crank.
View 1 RepliesTook about a 200 mile trip this weekend, stopped at a rest area about halfway through and smelled burnt carbon, smelled like a burnt clutch almost. It was very strong and there was smoke coming from the engine. It wasn't a lot but it was cause for concern. I checked the oil, last oil change about 1500 miles ago but no problems there, temp gauge was in the middle. Let the car sit for a 10 mins or so and then headed of again. When I got home that night, couldn't smell it and there was no smoke. Car has 42K ... Also, I got an airbag fault light about 30 mins from my house.

View 1 RepliesI was driving home today when I accelerated to go up a hill and started smelling something burning, pulled over and noticed my flex pipe was completely blown apart and the heat shield behind it smoking. I pulled over and got some water on it and it stopped but after I started driving again the smoke got even worse. This time it was something different than the first time. Could it be the heater core going or the foam inside the hvac system burning?

View 13 RepliesOkay so basically I was driving today when I noticed the smell of burnt toast. Didn't think anything of it so when I turned off my R I noticed some faint white smoke coming from my engine bay. It appears that the smoke is coming from the left side of the engine, when I pop off my engine covers, there are two hoses (one going to air intake/one going into intake manifold). It looks like its coming from either one of those hoses or somewhere below. I don't see any leaking fluids or anything.
View 4 RepliesI have a 99 alero. The temp runs right above the mid point and I get coolant over flowing out of the over flow tube. I have bought 2 caps and still the same problem. I have bleed the system thinking it was air trapped in the system after repairing a small heater hose. I thought that was the problem at first but I have repaired it and replaced the cap. But i'm still getting coolant coming out of the over flow tube.
View 4 RepliesI noticed the tube coming of the AC compressor (I think that's what it is called) have no insulation on them and are open in the engine compartment. I can't stand how poor the AC is already, so I'm looking at insulating them. What I could put on them that would be effective yet safe in the high heat of being under the hood?
View 5 RepliesI changed the oil in our 1999 Montana van (like normal) with a filter change over the weekend last. I might have overfilled the crankcase by about 3/4 of a liter. It registers about a liter too much on the dip stick. First time in 266,000 Kms. Just passed its emissions check in April; - all good. O2 has never been replaced.
On the way home from work tonight the CEL came on solid. Don't know the code or which sensor is throwing it yet, but I wondered if the excess oil might cause enough blow-by to clog the O2 sensor. Putting a scanner on it tomorrow morning.
I got my 2.0 turbo project up and running. no CEL but i did have a bad o2 code but it was erased and didn't come back.
Not only is it rough idle and smoking out the exhaust but i am also getting smoke out of my catch can vent.
The smoke looks black coming out of the tailpipe but little blue after it gets out a ways from the car. Where to look??
I did just replace a piston and install a head gasket spacer. I don't know if that could be causing it some and it will go away with some driving or what?
I have not taken it out on the road as I have some brake work to finish. so mostly it idled.

My 98 mountaineer keeps throwing rear end oil out the vent tube.. Why does it keep doing this?? its been doing this for a while and had to change an axle seal, I think because of this. It stopped doing this for a little while after I changed the seals and put in new oil.. Its not over full.. When it stopped I figured it was because the oil was old and was foaming or something.. But now its back to doing it again... The tube is not plugged.. Why does it keep doing this???

Here's the full story...my gas gauge just stopped functioning last week...so I ran out of gas... since then things have been going down hill...
I've searched all the forums and checked the fuel pressure by putting a pressure gauge right before the carb, its reading a steady 6 psi so I don't think the fuel pump is the culprit...
The carb started leaking gas into the crankcase..I checked the float level, cleaned out the needle, and replaced the power valve in the carb...then drained the crap oil/gas and put in a new oil filter and oil...
Then started her up for 2 minutes and she does it again....all kinds of gas in the oil... I've gone thru this about 3 or 4 times now and I've spent so much $$ on oil and oil filters trying to figure this bitch out...
I am now going to tear the entire carb apart and soak it in carb cleaner and if this doesn't work I'm switching over and buying a new Edelbrock...
I own a 2004 F-150 FX4 5.7L V8, I notice this morning that I had gear oil coming out of my rear Axle Vent Tube. What would cause this issue? I'm kinda at a loss as to what would cause it.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2001 7.3 and have found the engine oil dipstick coming out of the dipstick tube by 6 - 8 inches on three different occasions. Did not think much of it until my other 2000 7.3 did the same thing.
What causes this as afraid it will come all the way out and get into the serpentine belt.
