Golf IV R32 :: Scratchy / Rattling Sound When Idling?
Aug 14, 2014
At idle, what sounds like my transmission is making a scratchy/rattling sound that I haven't noticed before. What it is? (Be careful it's loud.)

View 6 RepliesI have a 2015 IS350 F-Sport. While accelerating, the engine sounds fine, but it sounds aweful when idling. Don't know how else to describe it other than like a rattling sound...it's just not smooth. Is this "normal" or should i schedule a service appt for my car?

I have a 2001 Saturn SL2 1.9 liter DOHC. I am getting a metallic rattling sound from under the car. The sound happens only at certain RPM idling speeds; what could this be?

I believe this issue was present before I replaced the speakers. The audio is scratchy out of the left side only. Checked the connections at the speakers. Speakers are brand new.
My first thought is check the radio connections to the factory wiring. Is there anything else I can check?
I'm getting the right resistance at the speaker.
In addition to being scratchy, the volume is low and sound is somewhat lifeless compared to the other side.
Went to the dealer today to check on this rattling sound that happens when i go about 70mph. He said it was the belly shield? is this the same as the skid plate? i think i ran over something and it broke the screws and some other things on it.
View 12 RepliesGet a rattling sound when in park and when it warms up after a little drive it goes away, When a gear is engaged the noise goes away.
View 4 RepliesI was playing with the paddle shifters while driving home and went into too high of a gear for my speed (I think 4th gear at only 20mph, 1000rpm). When I gave it some gas, I noticed a clattering/rattling sound coming from under the hood, along with the usual low growl/bogging you'd expect for being in too high of a gear. I quickly downshifted and the rattle went away and the car accelerated as normal.
Is this reason for concern? I only noticed this because I had my windows rolled down but worry I might accidentally damage something if I don't hear it or not pay attention.
When i first got my MKV R32 it was such a great handling car. I was able to got very fast on curvy roads with not even a slight bit of skid or squeal. Now its developed this rattling and squeaking sound. I feel the bumps in the road more, i notice more body roll, and alot of vibration in the steering wheel, and what pisses me off the most is i hear more squealing on turns that i used to be able to take faster with no squeal. For example i used to b able to take this turn at around 75mph no peel, now i started peeling out at like 63. (my tires have alot of tread) when i got the car it had around 17,000 mi on it now it has 31,000 mi.
View 17 RepliesI have a major rattling sound from under my car... it sounds exactly like a heat shield. I have been up under my car 5 times and I can not find a loose shield anywhere. the cat insulator mesh is still in perfect condition and it now seems the sounds is coming from somewhere in the back of the car, perhaps the muffler area.
This car does have the flapper mod done... could there be something inside the muffler itself? the car only has 40k on the ODO and I have not hit anything or do not have a dented muffler. As a fellow VW'er I do not want to be the only one running around town rattling...
Just today i was driving along in my 2.0L golf when I started hearing a rattling coming from under the front end, its a hollow sound that only really is loud when i step off the gas after accelerating, and a faint little rattle when I am idled. I wasn't too bad at first but now its to the pint where i get no exhaust sound coming out of my muffler, currently I have a 2.25" Magnaflow cat-back exhaust system, so I am pretty certain it has to do with probably the resonator or the catalytic converter. Where I can start?

My car started giving a rattling sound when idle 2-3 months ago. If the rev's needle is at 800rpm that woody woodpecker sound comes from the backseats (or maybe not, it's hard to tell). I slightly press the gas pedal and the sound's gone.
I remember the car to be dead silent during the first months, like omg i can hear my heart beating.
Having metal-on-metal loud sound coming from underneath the passenger seat (basically) at higher rpms? It sounds like it might be a heat shield or loose piece of the exhaust but I looked underneath and saw nothing out of the ordinary. It seems to be getting worse, so I am assuming its not supposed to sound this way.
View 12 RepliesSo im trying to diagnose my girlfriends issue with her car. When she starts it, the car will make a very loud rattling sound, not really grinding, but like metal on metal contact. Sometimes the sound goes away, but when the car is cold it is a guarantee. The battery light is also on, which was not the case when the rattle first started. I first thought (and hoped) it was perhaps the serpentine belt tensioner as I researched that when it fails it can make a loud rattle sound.
Once replaced, the same issues occurred. So I went ahead and put the old one back on since it was not the issue. Note that the old one and new one both shared the same tension applied to the belt and the pulley was still smooth without issues.
Using a stethoscope to try to determine the location of the rattle a bit more precisely I found the noise to be coming more from the alternator. Weird because I recently replaced it within the last year. I went ahead and removed the tension from the belt and played with the alternator for a bit. The clutch felt good when i used a screw driver to hold the fan and tried to move the pulley. One direction moved with ease while the other direction refused to budge, perfectly normal as I researched. The thing that I noticed that I thought was unusual was the fact that the shaft of the alternator had some play (Video below).
The belt has plenty of tension on it so i do not believe that it is slipping on the alternator. I push the belt with the tensioner engaged and the tensioner does not budge.
I decided to measure the voltage coming off the alternator with the car running and it was at 10.95 which im pretty sure is very low for these cars.
I recently lowered my 2012 Beetle with HR super sport springs/stock struts.. So this annoying tin rattling sound has come out. I just replaced the strut mounts thinking they separated like they are known to do. Sound Still there. Now my thinking either it is the sway bar end links being too long or possibly I have aftermarket wheels and aluminum hub rings it could be rattling over small bumps? Could it be the strut bearings? I've been over everything that I can think of and nothing is loose.
View 1 RepliesSo I recently traded in my '09 GTI for a 2012...and noticed that the same door 'creaking/rattling' sound is on the new one as was on the older model. This happens if I am turning a corner, entering a parking lot, etc. Not a huge deal, but annoying nonetheless.

There's a pronounced rattling sound coming from the front passenger area (I think), and you can hear it when the radio is playing. I booked an appointment at the local dealership, but the appointment was just cancelled because an "interior technician" is not available on weekends. Not only that, they said I may have to leave the vehicle at the dealership overnight, and that no courtesy car would be provided. Personally, I think that's complete BS - you don't need a P.Eng to diagnose a rattle, and what dealership doesn't have a courtesy car?
So, I'm curious to know if others have experienced anything similar, and if they've had any luck correcting interior rattles. I previously had a minor clicking sound in the overhead console area (bluetooth, lights, etc.), but that was quickly fixed at a different dealership.
So, I have discovered my first rattle in my GTI (8500 miles). Seems to be from the underside, sounds like a heat shield rattling, certainly sounds metallic. Did some spirited driving yesterday and hear the rattle today. Any target areas to check when I take a look under it?
View 6 RepliesI have the three way flapper switch and lately when I would start the car cold with the switch in the stock position I would hear a strange rattling/vibrating sound coming from the rear of the car then the other night I was trying to creep home and the flapper wouldn't close and still won't close no matter what position the switch is in. I looked and everything looks fine, the vacuum line is still connected and everything. Could this be a problem in the vacuum system or a blown fuse? Solenoid problem? I've never heard of this before....
View 13 RepliesI've got a 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT. A few days ago, my battery went dead when parked and listening to the radio. The terminals looked corroded but we jumped it and it was fine. Monday, my friend removed the connections and cleaned the terminals. The next day, I noticed that upon starting it, there was a noticeable rattle coming from the rear area of the car. Once I hit the gas, it's fine, and after a 50 min interstate drive it seemed fine. However, leaving work today it happened again-- a rattling when stopped at red lights or stop signs. Once I hit the gas it goes away, but starts on again as I slow to a crawl. Is the battery issue a red herring? What could be the cause of this?
View 15 RepliesI have an older 2001 Honda accord I4 about 160k miles on it. I recently noticed that there's a rattling sound when the car in in idle (800RPM) but it disappear when I rev it up to higher RPM or while driving. The noise can't be heard inside the cabin and can only heard outside. The noise also only appears when it is warmed (engine running for about 3 - 5 minutes after cold start). I read from other board about a loose or worn out heat shield so I went under the car and try to look for a loose of broken parts but I cant find any. I removed the cat heat shield but the problem still exist. I don't know what else to check. Car seems run normal, I don't notice any change in performance and no check engine or what so ever. I just wan't to make sure it is not something on the engine, transmission, or something that will snowball to a bigger issues. I don't know how long its been rattling but I just noticed it the other day.
