Golf IV R32 :: Rear Diff Started To Whine On Deceleration
Nov 14, 2010
My rear diff had recently started to whine on decel, what I am looking to find out is, would replacing the stock rear diff itself with a peloquin unit be enough of a fix, or should the whole rear housing be replaced as well? I don't want to buy a peloquin rear diff and install it and still have issues because of the pinion shaft being the culprit or something else.

So I put the R up in the lift today to look for a rattle underneath and I ran into this..

Fixed my AWD. Needed a new Haldex pump. Did a fluid change and new Haldex filter. All using factory stuff.
AWD works great now. The problem though is when im making tight slow speed turns. I.E. backing out of a parking stall. I get a noise from the rear diff like something rubbing, or a tire skidding.
Is this normal? I bought my car from the dealership without my AWD working and just got it fixed, so I really didn't know what an AWD R32 was like.

Top and bottom left. Where the 2 vac lines on the rear diff/haldex unit goes?

So since I added the spark cut tune, I've had this weird buzzing noise when it's down gearing. It doesn't do it in D though which is odd. What could be wrong?

This problem started in Jan this year and got worse through feb, got it checked in march to find out it had metal shavings and chucks stuck to the magnet. Ive searched the forums for the last few weeks but noticed no one seemed to point out if you can drive it while its like this or is this a recipe for disaster. other than the droning/whining the car will fight me will going in reverse while turning which has happened twice. Need to get the whole rear diff/haldex replaced....

I have a 2003 explorer where the pinion bearing has started to go, now the rear is starting to whine. the truck is a 2003, its a limited, with the 4.6 v8 in it. I would like to swap the rear with another used one, rather than rebuild the diff. the car is AWD, has a hitch receiver so I would imagine it has the tow package, my question is could I grab a rear out of a non AWD explorer, or one that had the 4.0 in front of it? something with the same gear ratio but out of a similar, non exact car, it has the advancetrac in it with the push button on the center console.

Upon moderate to hard acceleration I hear an intermittent spinning-like vibration noise from the rear diff area...is that normal?

Have some 'whine' coming from the rear differential under deceleration. In my case it just started occurring last night and seems to be audible over 55MPH and while in 5th or 6th gear after I let up off the throttle as to engine brake.
It seems like the answer or solution pertains to the input shaft pinion retention nut eventually backing off, as well as oil starvation to the unit, but has this actually been confirmed? My rear diff was replaced over 4 years ago under warranty after it failed and enduring 2 wheel drive for a bit.

I have a 2000 5.4 4x2 with about 118k. the pinion seal was leaking. I replaced the seal and added proper amount of 75/140 diff fluid as listed on the tag. I marked the pinion nut, flange and housing, so I could count the number of turns it took to remove nut. I put back the same but now I have a whine at low speed on deceleration. under normal throttle and at higher speeds it sounds just fine. Its just on deceleration and at 5mph or less. The sound was not there before I did the new seal.

I recently had my rear axle seals replaced due to leaking. Does the rear diff fluid get replaced on that repair since the rear diff cover comes off? Trying to figure out when my next interval for changing rear diff fluid should be.

I turned the key and it started to crank and slowly started to whine down. Tried it a 2 more times and it did the same thing only with less strength and on the third try all I hear is the starter clicking. Both batteries read 12.57 on my multimeter while not cranking. Does this sound like an alternator? All my electronics seem to have plenty of power.

So I have the dreaded rear diff whine, which started about a month (1000 miles) ago. I've read a bunch of the past posts, but still can't find a solution other than a) live with it, or b) spend $3500 for a whole new diff. (95k miles - no warranty) It seems the general consensus is that the problem stems from a loosened pinion nut. Is there no way to just tighten the nut? Or if I do will the whine continue because the gears are now worn? BTW I just had all the diff and tranny fluids changed. Made no difference.

So as the title states I'm getting a rear whine sounds more like a dump truck slowing down, anytime I go over 45 mph. I have an appointment tomorrow morning with VW to get it diagnosed and hopefully fixed.
I've checked and properly inflated my tires and there is still decent tread left. As far as I've seen it could be the rear diff or harmonic balancer.
I recently got my car tuned (apr stg I) and I'm lowered on neuspeed race springs with matched bilsteins. I doubt either of those would have any impact on my issue though.

I am looking for the codes for the tranny and rear diff on my 04. I know the engine is a AXQ but I can't figure out what the 6sp Auto and locking rear diff is. Where on the vehicle I might find these?

I've been trying to order a 2009 or 2010 V6 TDI. I'm being told by dealers in the seattle area that I can't order an '09, and also that the 2010 will not have the Air suspension, or Rear diff lock.

Since purchasing my T-Reg, I've heard a cranking sound, from what I assume is the rear diff at speeds from 1-5 mph. I only really hear it when I'm turning int a parking spot or parallel parking. I know the rear diff will spin the wheels at different speeds and I know at low speeds there can be some noise, but, since most passenger suvs don't have rear diffs, and some level of engineering has removed that nuisance from center diffs, it's not heard of to much. Is this something I need to have looked at?

I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to look like this.... how the heck am I even supposed to clean this out?!

Problem on early 2001 Sport Trac 4X4. I don't have the whining but a clunk when I go over bumps. I jacked up the left side and I can pull the rear wheel in and out maybe a 1/32 and I hear the clunk so I'm sure the loose rear end is the problem. How do I go about fixing it? New/used rear end? Mine is a 2001 (drum rear brakes)...
