Golf IV R32 :: Howling Sound Above 100km?
Oct 15, 2012
Howling sound when reaching above 100km? The sound comes spot on 100km, below it sounds normal. Would it be bearings or just wind noise sneaking in to the cabin? I bought the car used so is this normal.

When I go into reverse sometimes there is a long howling sound for a few seconds. Is that by any chance haldex unit? Is that an indication that it's low on oil, for example?

I hear strange sound of rubbing/howling at the front while driving. The frequency increases with the speed.I also feel little pulsation in the gas pedal. The sound goes off when the car stops rolling. The sound also get less or almost goes away when I turn steering a little bit left while driving.

6K mile 2011 Santa Fe Limited front wheel drive V6 and I am getting a humming/howling sound at 55+ MPH and it is very annoying, not too loud but there. It is really bad at 75+...
The tires were road forced balanced and a alignment was done by the dealer. The Rear was way out of align but they supposedly fixed it.
I do not get any kind of vibration in the body or steering wheel but the humming/howling sound is terrible. Almost like when you crack one of the rear windows and you get that pressure sound...

After tracking a howling sound from my 02 elantra gt pulley are, I figured it to be the water pump bearing. I replaced the water pump less then a year and a half ago and was wondering if its common for aftermarket pumps to go fast? Or is there anything I did wrong installing?

I've recently noticed a howling sound coming from the rear end of my f150 from speeds of 45-60mph it goes away as soon as i get to 60mph and starts again very slightly at 80mph. I am sure its the pinion and ring from everything I have read online. a friend told me that it could be the pinion gear is worn out or it needs re shimmed or something. what parts should I look for to get this fixed? could it be a fluid issue? I dont want to have to spend much more on this truck....I love it but it seems like i find a new "noise" every week. Ive always been a chevy guy and to my surprise I REALLY like driving this truck and i want it to work out. What should i expect to pay for a repair like this? BTW it is and 04 FX4 with 84k on it.

I have had 2 cars with exactly the same problem. The first was a 1998 Volovo V70XC. And the second is my current 2003 BMW 325Xi - both AWD. When driving say on a freeway at 60 mph and you touch the accelerator to apply power, you get a whining or slight howling sound. As soon as you lift, the sound disappears, but each time you touch the pedal, the sound reappears. It seems to be coming from the driveline toward the mid to rear of the car. As you accelerate to 65-70 or decelerate to 55-50, the phenomenon disappears. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?

I have this howling sound in the back that is like heavy tread tires. But thats not what it is. Had to have some work done at a shop (no choice) and they noted on the receipt a "horrible noise".
This is any speed, accelerating and decelerating and coasting in neutral. I checked the fluid in the diff, it is filled to the hole, has good color, smells ok, and no metal on plug. The carrier bearing appears bulged out in one area but the shaft is tight. There is no unusual vibration. The shop did say that I need rotors in the rear.

Got a weird "howling" (best description) noise coming from the rear. Only happens when letting off the gas. As soon as I start to accelerate it goes away. Let off the gas it comes back. Started Saturday.

I have a 2004 5.4 power f350 that makes a fog horn pitched howling sound at idle. First instinct was a pulley. Started it with belt off and its obviously something else because it still made noise. Traced it down to a resonating sound from the intake. Specifically the hose from the IAC to the air cleaner.
From some googling, i decided to change the IAC. No real change. So I took off the resonator tube and thoroughly cleaned it, took off the throttle body and cleaned it, took off the top snout part of the intake and cleaned that put in a new air cleaner (the glue was separating on the old one) and reset the battery. Still makes noise at least 85 percent as loud as when i started. Am I missing something?

Have an issue with 2nd gear? Specifically, driving around at say 2-3k RPM around a slow driving area and have a howling. whining noise come from the vents/engine bay area. Its strange cause this only happens in 2nd gear, no other gear at the 2-3k rpm range makes this noise.
At first I thought it was the HPFP, but when I brought it in a VW tech he heard nothing. But its pretty freaking obvious with or without windows up and no music playing.
Should I take this into another dealership to get this checked out? Or is it normal.
FYI I do have a Injen Intake installed.

02J-EGT 5spd. OEM axles.
Sounds like it's coming from the front. I noticed a few months ago my inner passenger CV boot was cracked, put motor mount spacers in which should have hopefully brought that axle up to okay standards. My initial reaction is to say the howling is from that CV joint however it's very odd it only happens after 35 and when I'm not heavy accelerating or deaccelerating- only when holding the car at a constant speed.
This also came after doing the TDI 5th. I notice it a little bit after passing 35mph in 3rd but really can hear it in 4th/5th when the engine revs drop. Am I right in thinking CV boot? Or transmission internal?

Is it only me having this annoying problem that above 100km/h the steering wheel starts vibrating - sometimes less, sometimes more. I had the vehicle taken to the Dealership several times where the guys first tried to balance and adjust the wheels and afterwords they changed all 4 tyres (KUMHO) + one rim but still the vibration (sometimes resembles mild shaking like driving on rough roads) is there. Don't know if this is normal or I am just too demanding but can't remember experiencing such thing with my previous cars like audi, citroen, etc...

Firstly, I've had an extensive look through the forum for existing threads dealing with this issue and have found a couple that seem to match... however I'm not entirely sure because noted that they had the car CEL come on... My wife's car doesn't. These threads dealt with gear shift flare, range selector switch faults, ECM reprogram - RPM flatspot... All except the latter noted that the CEL light came on...
Our problem - Loss of power and speed at 100km/h (auto trans)
In fourth gear (auto) traveling at 100km/h, RPM at this stage has settled to around 2100-2300. Then kicks down into 3rd (I'm assuming) with RPM just above 3000, and with little acceleration slowly build up to 100km/h and then start losing.

Is it possible on my new 2012 to change the mileage read out to mpg instead of L/100km?

Three months ago I acquired a car from my brother. It was a 2001 hyundia accent gsi. The car had sat unused for 10 months and because of this I had to put some work into it. It has a new battery, new starter and new engine belts because one snapped upon start up the first times. I have also had the oil changed.
For some reason it is reving really high. At about 100km/hr it revs at about 4000rpm. I have talked to my brother and he said it did not do this before. It is changing gears because I can hear it and watch the rpm's drop before going back up. In 3rd gear at 60 km/hr it revs at about 2100 rpm's.

The front end is screaming like the wheels are going to fall off.
Its speed dependent, and sometimes (but not always) you get get it to quiet a bit by hitting the brakes.
- It has about 56k mi on it, and the original brakes (but new tires a few thou ago).
- I pulled the RF wheel off, and there is 4.41mm pad left
- The MFI is not warning, and there is no visible scoring of the disc
- No visible damage or rubbing anywhere.
I know in the old days (my last 20 cars) they had a simple steel clip that hit the rotor at the minimum wear point. If these don't have that (And I'm confident they don't) whats causing all the racket? I sure hope a pad change fixes it.

On 3/16/15 i purchased a used 2013 Passat 3.6 SE. The car is pretty much what i was looking for, simplistic, clean, and with a touch of power. My test drive was minimal, never really hit the highway. The car had 19K plus miles when I bought it.
Here is my issue, when driving it home after purchasing it, as soon as we hit 69 MPH (range is 69-71ish), there is a "howling", not a whistling, noise comming from the front of the car. I initially thought it was the road, (road construction), or the "wind pattern" for that night. Well neither of those seem to be the issue. I havent really put many miles on it in my 2 days, maybe 50 miles..
What this noise could be? I really cant explain the nosie other that its a "howling" noise.. Like wind is depected hitting an open window in a horror flick?

Lately I've been experiencing a howling noise upwards of 2000 rpm when accelerating under a certain throttle position... Basically makes a WOO type of sound coming from the drivers side of the car.. very noticeable and annoying. When I step on the gas harder it goes away, and if i just rev the car in neutral (no load) the noise will not happen! This makes it impossible to figure out where it's coming from with the hood open. Checked the IC hoses, air box and a bunch of vacuum lines and no luck...

2002 EB V8 4WD 3.73 make a howling noise between 50 and 65 MPH? Sounds like it is coming from the rear end.

Had a howling noise that sounded like a bearing going out. After searching, I see that the fan belt is actually sliding on the pulley. Looks like a vertical alignment problem. It could be the idler pulley, the fan pulley or possibly the lower Crank (?) pulley knocking it out. I can see the belt sliding approx 3/8 to 1/2 inch . At idle it sits closer to the engine, as rev it seems to line up. All this action certainly means the belt is shot. But could be idler too.
I went through a few things to check it out. I looked at the power steering unit, pulled off the belt and check if there was any obvious play in each of the pulleys. All seemed ok. The idler seemed rough running but no wobble of play in it. I will replace the idler anyway since I bought one. The belt has no damage to it. It was changed about a year ago. So it's just been wandering on the fan pulley. Went to the Crank pulley and the dampener .and it feels tight. There are some obvious small plastic cracks on the outside. friend suggest pulling on the pulley and look for separation between the inner, outer, and rubber ring in between. Felt and looked tight. After I change the idler anyways, I'll look again. But could the crank dampener still be bad?
