Golf IV R32 :: Glove Box Drops Down With A Grinding Noise
Jun 7, 2015
The glove box normally opens in a slow and gradual, pneumatic kind of way. I opened it on Friday and it made a grinding noise then just dropped down. The left side hinge has ridges, like cog teeth and I'm guessing whatever gear fits those teeth has fallen out of alignment. The latch still works fine.

This noise happens from time to time with seemingly no rhyme or reason and has been present for some time now.
Here's a video of the noise in question. YouTube

Whenever I start my car, there is about 20 seconds of loud grinding coming from the glove box. It's sort of a tak-tak-tak-grrr-tak-tak-tak-grrr over and over. I've opened the glove box and noticed that with each start, the Navi box spits out the DVD, makes an awful grinding noise, then self-reinserts the navi DVD. I'm guessing this isn't normal, as it jars the normally whisper-smooth operation of my Phaeton. Is there an easy fix, or is this something to take the car into the dealer for? It would my first time taking it in for anything.

I have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe v6. I've had problems with the air conditioning in that it blows hot. Paid around 900 bucks to have a new compressor installed because the mechanic said that would fix it but it didn't. That was about 8 months ago. Still blowing strong but no cold air. About two weeks ago I took the car to a different mechanic who told me it needs a new compressor which would be 900 bucks. I declined that but had the guy do a little work on the breaks. He put new rotors and pads on the front brakes two weeks ago. Now within the past couple days when I start the car up it makes an extremely loud nasty grinding type of sound for a couple seconds then stops. Oil is fine and new. It happened this morning long enough for me to look under the hood and see the fans looked like they were fine, and the loud grinding noise seems to be coming from behind the glove box. It hasn't broke down on me yet, it's just really obnoxious and embarrassing with all the noise every morning.

Starting this past winter, whenever the overnight temperature drops below 45 degrees, a loud grinding/whirring noise emanates from inside the middle of the dashboard of my 2006 Prius. The noise occurs in regular one second or so intervals, and appears to originate inside or behind the touchscreen and radio/CD player.
The noise continues for about 15-20 seconds, and then goes away. The problem won't reoccur until the car cools overnight - i.e. the grinding noise won't reappear if I start the car up again when it's warm.
I recorded the sound this morning and have attached a sample WAV file here. I had to upload it as a zip file because the upload facility on PriusChat apparently doesn't allow one to directly upload a wav file.

"Workshop?" Will there by cuties there? Will I have to participate in small group discussions? What exactly happens at these workshops?
I've had this happen to me at least twice now since I've had the starter replaced @ Stohlman VW in N.VA. I've had some good experience with them thus far considering I've drop quite a bit of money into their service: complete hvac rebuild, starter, replaced a couple of pistons, etc...
Before I dive head first into replacing the alternator, is there a slight chance that the 2 are related? I figure I could try & fix it myself b/4 my car turns into a money pit.
There's no real rhyme or reason when the warning light comes on, I do notice that I hear some sort of grinding noise under acceleration. If I'm in neutral & coast, the warning light cuts off. It's not throwing any codes that I know of. I've got around 77K on the car now.
Other things I've read I could do too. Check:
1) battery terminals
2) slip clutch pulley
3) belt & tensioner

OK so my 02m goes into to all gears but when I try to take off it makes a grinding noise and kinda feels like it wants to start hoping. The car set for about 2 weeks and didn't have a problem with this at all. I can also shift the car into gear when started and not push the clutch in.
Car has a fx400 clutch with billet flywheelsl

Experiencing grinding/springy noise when you turn the steering wheel at low speed (carpark speed) or when stationary? Mine does after getting the coil spring and steering rack replaced under warranty. I don't believe this is normal. Service guy tried the steering on R36 and it was dead quiet compared to mine which squeaked and grinded like there is no tomorrow!

So I have the well known starter grinding noise since I bought the car six months ago. Is there really any danger to the flywheel or the starter itself not fixing this? I don't mean from a purist point of view, of course it's not good. I don't really care about the noise. Does it maybe 1 out of 3 starts in the cold. Are things really getting chewed up, or it's really no big deal.

All of a sudden, my car doesn't like to stay in first gear? I tried to put it into first gear and it wouldn't stay there, it made a grinding noise when I tried to go. So, if I want to start going, I literally have to hold it there to keep it in first gear.

For the last week or so been noticing as I'm slowing down, brake or no brake, a metallic, grinding noise coming from the rear passenger side. Does not sound like a humming worn wheel bearing noise. Its pretty loud, almost clunky and not always consistant. Then the last day or so have noticed it on the right side. At higher speeds....faintly hear a ticking... The car has 48K on it.

I'm getting a weird grinding noise when turning left/right. Doesn't happen with normal turns, just at the sharp extremes. What might cause it?

My R is developing a grinding noise from the front wheels. I thought changing the tires will fix this problem but it didn't. Any wheel bearings failure reports?

I hit a bump while pressing the brakes for a stop sign (going down hill), and I hear/feel this grinding noise through the pedal right when I hit the bump. I assume it might be the surface after the bump as it happened in the rain and it could be slippery causing the brakes to lock or something. I don't know, I might just be paranoid.

I just purchased a 2012 CC-R 2.0T Manual. One issue I'm having is during a cold start, the engine makes a very loud noise that doesn't resemble a higher rpm that usually comes with a warm up stage. It sounds like something is grinding, followed by a vacuum/sucking noise. It lasts about 20sec and then idles normally. It only happens during cold start.

I've recently been hearing a grinding/vibration noise on takeoff. I only hear it pretty much as soon as my foot comes off the brake, when the car is in drive, and the car gets its first bit of forward engagement/movement. It seems to only happen when the DSG engages in drive, before I put my foot on the gas pedal.
The closest thing I can say it sounds like is an exhaust rattle, but way less violent/not metal on metal sounding.

I've noticed recently that on startup I'll hear a minor grinding noise after the engine has kicked over. Seems to happen more when the car is really cold.

So I'm driving to work and as I slow down to pay the toll I hear a weird grinding noise from the rear (sounds to be rear right) get out and check the crime scene. The plate is not rubbing on the rotor and there is nothing stuck between the rotor and the plate, so then i check the pad and they look pretty low, check the other side and looks the same, check the front and they r good n meaty. So can this mean I need new pads? The grinding noise goes and the car goes, the faster i go the faster the grinding noise goes, as i slow down it slows does..
Wanna make sure I get the problem right so I can fix it since I'm doing a Haldex oil service cause I also have the binding noise and then i gotta get the coolant flush done... hope all I need is pads... The noise goes away when I brake.

My car is a VW golf GLS 1.8L Turbo 4dr Hatchback with a manual transmission, and has had modifications to the intake as well as the exhaust. Recently the clutch would grind every time I shifted gears and let go of the clutch. When I would let go, there would be a grinding noise that I could feel at my feet, but the car would still go albeit a slower rate. I could eventually reach a higher gear and then drive normally around because the grinding would lessen as I shifted to higher gears. In addition to the grinding, there was a faint smell of burning coming from the front left wheel. I was wondering if this is because I need to replace my clutch?

I've got 39K on an 04' R32, just had new tires put on 17" rims and the car was aligned. Whether the alignment has anything to do with these noises I'm not sure but thought I should at least mention it. I'm also still on the original front brake pads if that matters.
So, shortly after getting the tires & alignment done I was driving at around 35-40 mph down a steep hill and applied the brakes. I heard what I'll call a clunk and it felt like something shifted. No other noises were heard or felt until I got home. As I rolled backwards into my parking spot with the tires cocked to the left I hit the brakes and again heard a clunk. However, this clunk was much quieter. It sounded like it came from the front drivers side wheel and I could feel the "clunk" in the steering wheel ever so slightly.
Next day I went down the same hill and applied the brakes quickly and a bit hard. Nothing. No clunk, no noise, nothing. Got home and when parking heard/felt a small clunk. A friend said it might be the caliper or pads shifting which made sense to my ignorant a$$ because the pads are originals.
Since I don't drive the car much I'm waiting on getting it checked out and wanted to do some research here before I take it in. Well, it's time to take it in because now I'm getting a slight grinding noise when the wheel is turned any amount to the right and also when I turn hard to the left. I can feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel too when this grinding noise occurs.
I've seen some posts that seem similar to my situation. They include wheel bearings, sway bar linkage, coil something or other and hopefully not CV joint. Is it possible the alignment caused something to go bad? If so, I'll go back to that shop. I really want to avoid the dealership because I hate being raped on parts.
