Golf IV R32 :: CEL Light Is On / Codes P0491 And P0492
Dec 13, 2011
So I've had the car since Saturday and this morning when I went out to run some errands I get a check light. The codes are P0491 and P0492 which I did a search and found out is the secondary air pump and relay.
A few sites I checked (but were for other VW's) said it might be a fuse. If it is the secondary air pump or relay or fuse where are they located so I can take a look? Can I also assume they are dealer only items?

Codes P0491 and P0492 ... The Air pump works, so what's the problem? Perhaps the combo valve? If so how do I check this?

I was told that these are affiliated to a problem with the air pump (not the one you pump the tire up with) -- Need to locate the air pump? Hoping to find a loose hose or something I can fix.

I did not even drive the car 2 times since I bought it and the check engine light came on last night. Codes show P0491 and P0492. What can be the cause and what I should check or change?
We also had a monsoon of rain in NY on Wed. I found a puddle of water in the passenger foot carpet area. It was drenched. Glove box was dry and the seat was dry. Where can this water be coming from?? Could this have triggered my check engine?

The dealership wants to charge me just to "diagnose" it. I'd like to figure it out myself if at all possible. what it is?

My friend has a b5.5 passat and he's getting this code; p0492... what that means? or what might be causing that code to come up?

This whole time I thought it was a bad or dirty MAF and it's not as I replaced it 3 times. Car hessitetes and throws a ESP light on so now I think it's problem with abs or brakes.
I have engine code:
-16486 P0102 Air mass meter G70 signal too low
I do have a VF MAF harness extension cause used to be S/C maybe that's why the signal is low, then 2 abs codes:
-01314045 Engine control module (ECM) check DTC memory there isn't much info on this but I heard a lot of people replace their ABS control module cause VW says most have short in them but in ECS tuning they don't have one for R32 like R32 doesn't have it. Does R32 have it.
-00495 ESP - sensor unit, voltage supply
I tried clearing all the codes but comes right back followed by a hesitation.

I recently had an issue with a coolant leak. the Y shaped coolant line connection went bad located under the power steering reservoir. The car got hot and the coolant light came on i immediately turned the car off and saw coolant leaking out from this.
Now today I start my car it has a rough idle and dies once it dies it doesn't start again and the epic light comes on throwing the codes
17579 P1171 Throttle Actuation Potentiometer Sign.2 Range/Performance
17951 P1543 Throttle Actuation Potentiometer Signal too Low
16497 P0113 Intake Air Temp.Circ High Input
17987 P1579 Idle Speed Contr.Throttle Pos. Adaptation not started
17953 P1545 Throttle Pos.Contr Malfunction
17976 P1568 Idle Speed Contr.Throttle Pos. mechanical Malfunction
18012 P1604 Internal Control Module Driver Error

I was driving and my temp gauge said that it was around 260 and then my engine light came on. I scanned it and these 2 codes came up.
p0050
p3081
I looked the codes up but one said that it was a coolant problem and the other one said that the engine was too cool.

I bought my son a 2005 GTI MkIV (great dad right). On the drive home it threw a light the code was P4011 secondary air no prob found a hose off and issue solved. The car had 66k so I made him leave it at home until the timing belt was changed (read about alot of failures between 60 and 80k). Everything was great for 2 weeks last Thursday the EPC light came on and he got it home in limp mode. I pulled the following codes P0221 and P2637.
Am I looking for a short? I have read that it has been the following.
Brake light switch
Gas pedal
MAF
Intake manifold...

I was driving along the highway cruising at around 100 km/h when out of nowhere the car started driving a little rough so I look down and the ASR (traction control) light was on. I got off the highway, shut it down and fired it back up. The ASR light was off and car running like normal. When I got home I scanned it and these codes came up:
The catalyst code if from my catless turbo-back exhaust which I plan to fix next month with a tune. Anyway I cleared all codes and continued on my way without any other hiccups. So is my MAF sensor dying/dirty? ECU? N75 valve? Boost leak? I'm making a boost leak tester today just to 100% eliminate that variable, though I'm fairly certain I'm good there.
The car is mostly stock except for a few bolt-ons, all of which I've had installed for thousands of kilometers now. Here is what isn't stock, not including suspension, wheels, etc:
Forge 008 diverter valve
034 Motorsports PVC silicone hose kit
Samco boost hose kit
Forge silicone turbo inlet pipe
Eurojet SMIC
custom built 2.5 stainless, catless turbo back
AEM Dryflo short ram intake
GLI MFA cluster

Alright so the woman finally picked up a GTI but the MFD is saying check rear side lights for both left and right. The car has a euro switch installed and when I turn the lights off completely then back on all the way to the right, the lights come on for about 6-7 seconds before turning back off (making a chime/warning sound). Could it be the Euro switch or maybe the lights going out? Fuses are good.

My daughter's 2000 Jetta with a 2L has an engine light and codes that state Misfire on 1 and 4. It is intermittent as it only misfires once in a while.. She is in Rolla MO, and I am in Detroit MI. A couple of years ago the car died when she was home and I found a swollen/cracked coil pack. I replaced it with an aftermarket. The plugs and wires were replaced about 30k ago with OEM parts. I am tempted to have the son in-law replace the coil pack with a Bosch unit.

I'm having some problems with my 05 1.8T GTI. I've had a check engine light for about 3 months and finally got a diagnostic tool (VAG V-checker). Right now I have one code 17748.P1340 Camshaft position sensor-G40/engine speed sensor -G28: incorrect allocation.
I researched a little bit and talked with some of the guys at the local VW dealership. From what I learned this could be related to (obviously) faulty camshaft position sensor and/or faulty engine speed sensor. So I've replaced both of these sensors and even cleaned the Mass Airflow sensor.
I cleared the code and after driving about 5 minutes the code came back. Also I recently had a P0300 and P0304 cylinder 4 misfire default code. So I've changed all of the ignition coils too since I heard they were recalled a while back.

The vehicle is a 2004 Jetta MK4 1.8t.
Last thing I had replaced about 2 months ago was the Solenoid valve, the MAF and Solenoid hose. Car ran fine for about a month, and bam...engine light came back on, along with the ASR light. At first it was saying "cat converter" so I researched that, and what a surprise, it spoke about being a $1k piece to replace. NOTHING HAS BEEN CHEAP ON THIS CAR, and I'm losing my mind.
The latest adventure happened today coming back from the gym. Car started jerking (which has been normal since every now and then the ASR light will come on, which I'm told is the traction control light. Causing the car to jerk. Simple fix is pulling over, shutting the car off, and turning it back on. That always clears it, and then I'm back on the road.) but instantly it lost power. It wont shift, but the traction control light didn't come on. I plugged my OBD2 tool up, and came back with these fault codes:
P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0753: Shift Solenoid "A" Electrical
P2637: Torque Management Feedback Signal A
I'm going to go to these guys tomorrow, but I would just like to get an educated guess on what might be going on, so I don't look like a lost dog while they're figuring out what to do next. These guys seem knowledgeable, but they're missing something since I've been in and out of their shop several times and still getting my traction control light on at random times, and now all 3 of these codes.
Does that Solenoid code have anything to do with the Solenoid valve they put in? I was told that cleaning the throttle body and the cat converter might work. Would those be cheaper options to consider, and see if that works?
I also read that unplugging the alternator and plugging it back in, then cleaning the male and female with electrical cleaner might work. I was told about a month ago that my battery barely passed. Could this be causing any of my issues? I also did a log while I was driving, but all that's showing up is a google map document.

So i installed a USP test pipe and got Revo Stage 2 upgrade yesterday. I had no codes before the test pipe. I still have a CEL for 9 fault codes. 4 of which are all the o2 sensor codes. With all these codes my Traction Control light is on too. I think this may be a safety thing. I thought Stage 2 was supposed to get rid of the CEL. Especially for the 02 sensors in the rear.

I coded a few things through VCDS (fogs as DRLs, turned up XDS, enabled TSC, etc.) and now I'm getting fault codes from ABS...
I did an autoscan before I started and there were no fault codes before.

My AC condenser was punctured at the beginning of the week. No check engine lights. I pick the car up and it had four codes. They are
P0445
P0498
P2257
P0414
Are these codes related to the AC system running without any freon or something else related. To the condenser? I know the definitions of these codes but what do they really mean?
